Hand pollinating

Springfield, OR(Zone 8a)

Hi all. I know how to hand pollinate, but I'm wondering, besides timing of appearance, is there a way to tell male flowers from female without forcing them open? When I force them I get the idea that I've left them more vulnerable to ants or such. I have actually found ants in the blooms later but don't know if that is a problem.

i guess it would depend on the plant, but usually the female ones will have a ball or nub or some kind of tiny miniature version of whatever they grow into once they get pollinated. the ants are usually just after the nectar, as long as you dont see any aphids around, although they have been known to pollinate a flower or two from their nectar cravings.
