Mold or mineral deposit, looks fuzzy?

Chicago, IL

I have a few plants in my apartment potted in terracotta pots and I think mold is forming on the outside of the pots.

One is a golden pothos, two are snake plants, one peace lily, and one dracaenas fragrans. I originally noticed the substance on the golden pothos so I bought some better soil and repotted all the plants as I was wondering if it was the cheap Kmart soil I bought. Now I'm noticing it on all the plants in terracotta pots.

It's white and fuzzy and showing up in splotches. I am new to this and can't tell if it's mold or not. I made a solution of water, baking soda and a bit of Dawn and sprayed the pothos as a test. Not sure if it's working. I also repotted that particular plant into a plastic pot.

I live in a basement apartment with medium to little sun. The soil looks ok. A couple leaves on the pothos look like they are dusty, not sure if it's related. White dust looking substance.

I think it is minerals. Salts, for example from fertilizers will do this. If you have hard water then the minerals in the water will do this. Same sort of minerals as are seen on plumbing fixtures and aquariums.

Several times per year plunge the whole pot + plant into a bucket of water to deep soak the whole thing then let it drain. This will make sure that the excess salts and minerals get leached away. The faster you see it building up the more often to do this.

I agree with Diana_K. Also, if you don't like the look of the minerals building up, then you can wash the outside of the pot.
You might send a pic of the pothos leaves, if you are not 100% sure that it is only dust. People can take a look and check it out.

Thank you! Even though it looks fuzzy? I don't have a problem with the look as long as it's not harmful to the plant or to our apartment.

The 2nd and 4th picture were worrying me. I didn't realize salts could look fuzzy like that.

Thanks for the help

MInerals can look fuzzy.

The build up can harm the plants. Best to soak it out of the soil and pot occasionally.

Thanks again for all the help. Here's a follow up picture after a couple days. Definitely looks like a fuzzy mineral deposit, not so worried it's mold anymore.

Also here's a picture of the Golden Pothos leaf and the white dust looking substance. Hopefully it's just dust! I went to home depot and all the pothos there had the same looking stuff on the leaves.

Stuff on the leaf is not just house dust, but I am not sure what it is.
If it wipes off easily, without damaging the leaf I would wipe it off.

The white on the pothos leaves is residue from foliar fertilizer used by the grower. Wash it off with lukewarm water.
