I would love some suggestions for a low plant which would line our front walkway to our door. The area is shaded by 2 large live oaks most of the day. Liriope is what I usually see at the local nurseries... the area on each side of the walkway was scalped by the weedeater.
plant for walkway - Houston, TX
Liriope will give you a grass-like effect, not more than 1' high (most varieties).
Look into other plants that grow in shaded areas, too.
Will you be able to water this area?
How high and wide do you want something to grow?
Do you like the grass-effect of the Liriope, or were you looking for something with more rounded leaves?
Are you looking for something permanent like small shrubs or perennials? Or do you want something that you have to replant seasonally, but might have more flowers?
Can you add some pictures of the area?
I want something that is UNEXPECTED.. like giant the giant leopard plants and the kaffir lillies that I have in the beds nearby. We definitely have to water in Houston, though the shade trees help. I don't want anything too wide, and perhaps a foot tall? I had considered just adding river rocks, but I really love plants.
OK:
Shade, average garden water, USDA zone 9, 1' or so high, not much wider.
Perennials:
Alchemilla
Campanula (there are a lot of them, see what is available in your area)
Ferns (smaller species)
Heleborus
Oxalis (several ornamental species and varieties, not the invasive weed)
Primula (several, may be short lived)
Viola (some can be very invasive, most are quite small)
Between 1-2' and about that wide:
Berginia
Heuchera
and several from above, slightly larger species and varieties.
Bigger, for accents:
Aspidistra
Rhemannia
and a few from the above lists, larger/taller species and varieties.
Idea: Add some other things like rocks, big driftwood or similar (natural) things and group some plants around them.
