Smoke Tree Blossomshow long does it take?

West Orange, NJ

How long does it take a Smoke Tree to show blossoms? Ours is three years old and we live in the Northeastern U.S. Thank you. (The photo is NOT our tree!)

I have seen blooms even on a 5 gallon plant from the grower, but more often it does need to grow a bit larger than that. Couple of feet tall is usually too small to bloom.
I would think that 3 years in the ground is enough that you ought to see something. Is it growing well?

Care in pruning time will make a difference as well. If you have been pruning in spring, you may be removing the wood with the flower buds.

It's growing well and looks healthy. It was just a sprig when we bought it. It's kept in direct sunlight and we water it once a week or more.

I would imagine this tree needs to reach full growing height before it will begin to flowers, the flowers are so small and un-noticeable as it's grown mainly for the beautiful colour.
IF any pruning as needed at all, then I would be doing it right AFTER the flowering period is over BUT to be honest, I would NOT prune the tree at all, let it grow upwards and outwards until you feel there is a problem arising with maybe a branch growing in the wrong direction, cut any branches of tree's when there is NO sap rising, mostly winter and for your tree, that would be after flowering.
I had to wait 16 years or so for my beautiful Tulip tree (Liriodendron) to produce flowers, well first time there was 3 flowers, but now, 5-6 years, later this year especially, there has been masses of those large tulip shaped yellow / cream flowers, so patience is everything, wait and you will get that surprize you long for, I think this year here UK especially, the very wet / rainy winter without too much freeze in my part of UK has made a lot of the plants / tree's / shrubs flower their hearts out, Rhododendrons have been the best ever. and mine are over 30 years old.

Hope it's NOT TOO long before you get that bright glow you are mad keen to experience, just believe that the first year you get the red fire glow in your garden, it will be repeated every year there after, now that's worth the wait EH !!!!.
Kindest Regards.

This is one I never had as I did n't have the room. I have never seen any one prune them. One of my bushes took 5 yrs to take off.....I guess keeping competitors & feeding in spring is a good idea
