What to do?

Havre De Grace, MD

This spring I planted a lovely little Hearts of Gold Red Bud tree. Recently it has gotten a lot of reddish irregular spots on many of the leaves. The spots turn brown after a while. Yhere are no rings or fuzzies.
The tree is planted in full sun ( shade after 3), I have watered it a lot, we have had a lot of rain. Could this be a fungus? A nutritional deficiency? A virus? Too much water? Too much sun?
Any advice on what to do would be greatly appreciated. I am a newbie to planting trees ...

Redbuds can get leaf spot from time to time, but it is merely a cosmetic problem.

If you have whole branches of leaves turn all brown, then it is time to worry. There are cankers and Verticillium wilt that can cause that situation.

Thanks for your reassurance. I do hope it isn't serious as it is a beautiful little tree. I have removed many affected leaves, sprayed with a fungicide and cut back on the watering . Today I plucked off two leaves that were crunchy but not discolored. Any words of wisdom are truly appreciated!

You probably have seen plenty of images of what your plant grows into. If not, check out PlantFiles - and keep hope alive.

Yes! Such a lovely little tree! I sure hope it survives my good intentions...
I also planted two Viburnums- Mariesii and Summer Snowflake... will they pollinate each other and get berries? I hope so as I am trying to feed the birds.

Those are compatible plants for cross-pollination. When they are blooming together, you should have fruit as a result.

Since 'Summer Snowflake' is a reblooming form, its later blooms probably will not be (as) fruitful as the earlier coinciding blooms with 'Mariesii'.

If you have room, some other viburnums to plant that are ridiculously fruitful and suitable for hot steamy Havre de Grace (ask me how I know) are Arrowwood Viburnum - Viburnum dentatum. Use a couple of selections so you get cross pollination. These are prolific in flower, and then gobs of blue fruit ripen in midsummer to drive birds wild.

How do you know?- heh!
I already have a gorgeous Kerns Pink- of course it doesn't berry but it is magnificent!
I took out a bunch of huge trees last winter (dangerous) and have been having great fun re painting my newly sunny backyard.
Thanks! pat

July 1991, on the way to younger brother's wedding in Wilmington. Wife and I spent several days at a B&B in Havre de Grace, and I don't think it was any less than 105°F. Didn't cool off even at the shoreline.

I'll plan future visits for spring or fall, thank you very much.

Unfortunately it is one of those days today... Fortunately we do have some lovely days to enjoy as well! I guess it takes the bad to appreciate the good.
Thank you for your help and try us again sometime. lovepat
