Hi All,
First time flower gardener.
I’m growing lots of nasturtium this year as companions to my inner city (veggie) container garden. I hope they make good friends to my tomatoes, peppers, zucchini and cukes. The seeds started and grew (early April) without much trouble. I have them in several containers all around the patio in full to moderate sun. I used the potting mix from last year’s tomato bed with some sand as substrate. Other than some occasional yellowing foliage the plants seem to be happy and healthy.
However there are no signs of blooms on any of the plants. These plants are all 8-10 weeks old now. From what I have read online, nasturtium should begin to flower within 35-52 days of germination. Needless to say they are not on schedule. It’s been a relatively cool, spring and summer here in Chicago. Could that have some impact on flowing?
Also, my marigolds (tall variety) that were germinated in the same time frame are just now beginning to flower.
Please advise.
Thanks,
PT7
Nasturiums not flowering
I haven't grown Nasturtiums in years. One thing I DO remember - they do better in poor soil.
Don't feed or you'll end up with lovely foliage & no flowers.
I suspect the weather is having an impact. I'm in NY and it's been cool here as well. We had a few hot days & things started growing fast. It cooled down again & some of the plants are "on hold".
I know I'm in the UK but the same story here, just no flowers. Until yesterday, a bit of sun and the first flower opened. So hangeth on in there !!
When times for flowering are given, please understand, these are guidelines, NOT exact timings. there are different temps, soils, light, how much sun, watering etc all to be taken into account, Think babies, mothers are given a due date but, some babies cant wait and arrive kicking and screaming 2-3 weeks early or more, OR others don't want to come into the world on the date given, but weeks later so,believe me, plants from seed are just as unpredictable LOL.
I would await a few more weeks, IF nothing by then, they may be what is called blind plants, very, very occasionally some plants / bulbs can grow plenty of foliage BUT no flowers,
IF you are getting too much foliage with these plants, then I would imagine the soil has been too rich / fertile for the type of plant, as mentioned above, they DONT like a rich soil, It's said by old gardeners that the type of soil for Nasturtiums is soil from used pot plants that have depleted their soil after several years. that gives an idea how much these plants need poor soil.
As above, hang on in there, there's still plenty time.
Hope you get a lovely display and enjoy the flowers, they are delicious in salads as are the leaves.
Kindest Regards.
WeeNel.
