Strawberries: Mara Des Bois

Cresaptown-Bel Air, MD

This is my first year starting a garden, and strawberries will be a big part of it.

On April 1st, I planted 50 bare-root strawberry plants (Mara Des Bois.. received from Burpee) in a raised bed. I have just begun picking in the last few days, but the berries don't seem to match the description.

Maras are supposed to be small to medium, and have a lot of fragrance and sweetness. These berries seem medium to medium-large, have almost no fragrance, and aren't excessively sweet.

Is it possible the roots were mis-labeled? Should the berries need a different sort of management? The foliage looks healthy (with the exception of some mild fungus issues, as we're having a wet year).. moderately green. I didn't want to over-fertilize, so just used a bit of slow-release fertilizer in addition to mushroom mulch and some bagged manure.

I'm willing to consider too much water as resulting in "diluted" odor and flavor, but berry size shouldn't be affected, right?
