My wife seems to think that when my lawn fertilizer (30-0-3) gets into her flower bed, it causes the flowers to put out more leaves and less blooms. Specifically lilies.
True - or false?
Will a lawn fertilizer (30-0-3) cause flowers to NOT bloom?
True. The 30 number is nitrogen which encourages green growth. An excess of it produces lush leaf growth often at the cost of producing fewer flowers/fruit.
The middle number is the 'flower power.'
http://www.growingagreenerworld.com/the-numbers-on-fertilizer-labels-what-they-mean/
It also depends on what the soil is like. That is an extreme value for N-P-K, so I agree that high nitrogen with no phosphorus and so close to no potassium is not a good fertilizer for flowers, and is good for a lawn only if you know your soil has plenty of available P and K.
A few odd granules that scatter into a flower bed are not going to do much, good or bad. But I sure would not deliberately use that formula where I wanted the flowers!
I use a more balanced fertilizer (21-7-14) for lawns and green shrubs and ivy, and scatter it at a lower rate among flowering plants (mostly Zonal Geraniums). There are also fruit trees with roots in the area, and they flower and fruit just fine. However, there are ivy (Hedera helix) and a blended lawn under most of the fruit trees, and I think these are getting the lion's share of the fertilizer.
I hate to say it BUT, the words LAWN And FERTILISER is a dead give away with regarding leaching or spreading into flowering plants, especially bulbs as they are Normally closer to the surface than Most types of shrub / tree type plants.
Grass being made up of GREENERY with quite shallow root system, and will need to be left uncut for a while for it to give out flowers, therefore your fertilising greenery, which is why Grass Fertilisers have a higher percentage of Nitrogen as that's what Grass requires every now and again.
The reason the fertilisers are used is two fold, as expected, it's to give the grass plants a good feed / tonic, that helps bulk out the sheaths of grass (Stalks and leaves) this in turn helps take the roots to bulk out also and when all that happens, it is said to help prevent space for weeds to develop and also smother any small weeds before they get growing and maturing where they can then reduce the grass growing strong and lush because the weeds are usually the stronger of the plant / grass.
When the rain or watering causes the Lawn feed to run off or leach into your flower beds / Borders, these plants are getting way too much Nitrogen and encourages these flowering plants to boost up the greenery, by doing this, they are confused and see no need to put out flowers, and NO flowers make for poor growing and no pollination, ofcourse it also means you get no enjoyment from lush green foliage and no flowers / colour / perfume,
Perhaps there is a safer time / season to apply the grass / lawn feed, say early in the season before the flowering plants start to grow or are in there dormant period, when dormant, they don't take up feed / water so much but it will also allow amendments to be given to the flower beds / borders.
There's always a way around this type of lawn treatment and the care of other stuff growing in the same area.
Hope this helps you sort things out and you can start to enjoy your plants again.
Kindest Regards, WeeNel.
