Peony Experiments Part 2

Dublin, GA

This is P11 Blue. I started the process on 05/31/2014. This is the process I followed:

Step 1: soak in 3% peroxide for 20 min to kill any germs and drain
Step 2: using a clean general purpose utility blade cut the end off the seed until you see the whitish interior, but not too deep
Step 3: soak in Miracle-Gro Bloom Booster mixed at 1.5 TBS per gallon for 24 hours
Step 5: place in seed starter mix that has been moistened with Miracle-Gro Bloom Booster in a clear plastic cup
Step 6: place in an opaque plastic bin with a lid on a window shelf to keep warm
Step 7: check for moisture and growth in the morning and evening
Step 8: when mix feels dry spray with Miracle-Gro Bloom Booster mixed at 1.5 TBS per gallon of water.

(I mix the Miracle Gro in an empty milk jug, then pour into a spray bottle and give 1 or 2 sprays until it feels damp)
I took the pictures this morning (6/4/2014)
( I know the blue peonies are not likely truly blue, but they are still peonies and at 99 cents for 20 seeds you can't beat it right?)

Cant imagine where you got the info that you could germinate TREE PEONIES seed in several weeks, I grow Perennial Peonies (or have done in the past) they take anything from 2-5 years and there is no way to hurry this up that I am aware of.
Some of the seeds came to nothing and when seeds were cut open, there was a lovely tiny little worm inside that had lived off the actual seed that's held within the hard shell.
Unfortunately, the plants, after many years and nice healthy foliage, there has been NO flower buds as yet and they are now about ten years old.

You need to know IF the tree peonies the seeds came from were grafted plants or not, Grafted plants will be all different types of flowering Peonies, all named but grafted onto a stronger root stock as the tree peonies are NOT known for being able to support the heavy weight of the top growth, BUT by grafting the named species onto the old wilder stronger root stock, we can now buy quite a selection of flower colours, size and even new, leaf colour.

Seeds do NOT require feeding with miracle grow or any other type of feeds / fertilisers etc, nature without our help, made seeds / bulbs / tubers etc carry all the right kind of food supply required for germination and enough to last until there is new leaf growing, normally a second pair of leaves showing will be more than enough time to start offering a very weak (half dose recommended by maker) to any fully germinated plants of ANY type. Early feeding can kill the emerging seedlings as there roots are like little threads and not strong enough to up-take feeds of any type.

You need to ask yourself why you would waist plant feed even IF very well diluted, on hard coated seeds that have NOT germinated, so there is absolutely NOTHING to take up the feed, the constant adding of the Miracle grow can and will be building up in the soil because as I said earlier, these seeds need a long time to germinate and will be sitting in the soil for that length of time, so maybe re-evaluate the germination method you have been given,
You don't say where your seeds came from BUT 99 cents, is not very much to pay for viable seeds of any type let alone expensive seeds like tree peonies.

Hope this helps you out a bit and you take patience to allow the seeds to germinate at the rate nature intended, I know it's a long time sometimes to get germination BUT the waiting makes for more excitement when it does happen.

Kindest Regards.
WeeNel.
