Killing prickles in Florida lawn...

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Hi! I don't really think about the "lawn" much, if it's short and green I don't quite care what sort of green thing it is. The only thing I care about killing is the prickly burr-grass. Boy I hate that stuff!

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Dig it out by hand.
Spray it VERY CAREFULLY with weed killer, being careful not to spray surrounding plants. Spray when it is not windy, and perhaps lay down some cardboard to protect nearby good plant.

Fertilize and water the lawn so that the good plants (any species, or a mix) will grow a bit denser and seeds of undesireables will have less room to get started.

Oh, boy... Dig it out by hand? I'd guess a quarter of my "lawn" is the stuff. The rest is St. Augustine, dollar weeds and some other types of weeds. :(. Behind my house is a huge easement and small canal that is only mowed by the city twice a year and is chock full of all sorts of different stickers. Even though I'm against broadcast able chemicals in general, trying to keep a "native" yard, and only use an arch hose sprinkler when it's too dry for too long - I was hoping there would be a herbicide that would only target the sand burrs. They look just like grass until they start getting the burrs on them, which is why you can't just target those, I guess.
I can stand picking off most sticker-things, but those burrs are just plain nasty. Guess I'll have to start being nicer to the lawn, and make sure it gets watered more frequently. Darn. This means I'm gonna have to fix a bunch of broken sprinkler heads and start pulling prickles next weekend...

Many plants are closely enough related so that there are very few weed killers that will target a very narrow range of species. Especially when there are a mixed lot that you want to keep.
