Gita, We are putting in one of those ductless systems that runs on the outside of the house with units that go thru the wall. Some type of heat pump system. Our house has electric base board heat but that is very very expensive to run. When Ric moved in he put in the coal/wood stove. We could go back to using the old electric baseboard heaters but we want something more efficient plus putting in and pulling out the window ac unit is a pain and not as efficient either. We aren't looking at a conventional furnace since we don't have a basement and duct work was never put into this house it would be quite a job to put that type of system in.
Weather Watching Summer
Ohhhhh--I did not know of ll your limitations,,,,Sorry!
You have enough able-bodied/knowledgeable men in your family
to figure all this out....I agree--Coal heat has its disadvantages....
It will all be OK! Gita
We know several people that have this system and are pleased with it. Ric has been looking at it for several years now and Josh has installed several of them.
I could just not make it if we didn't have our central a/c this time of year!! It's been running for a while now this season, though thankfully, early on this Spring we didn't need it for much of the time, just turned the 'heat' on at night and then turned it all 'off' during the day. We typically keep it set at either 74 or 75...Can NOT sleep when it's too hot and humid.
I was outside ALL day yesterday, cleaning up perennials and re-organizing the tables, and praying for rain the whole time. We finally got some during the night last night.
Sounds like quite a long-term, carefully thought out project, Holly! It's great that Josh already has experience installing it.
I just love the spring and fall temps when the HVAC can stay off most of the time! I agree--would never be able to survive in this area without it, especially during the summer.
A proper thunder storm is working its way past me as we speak... it started about 1/2 hour ago, was POURING for about 25 minutes, thunder booming and clapping (and scaring the crap out of me, HA!). Now it's rumbling and grumbling away off in the distance. Hoping for some of that to return later today.. just not while I'm driving to the dump and the Orthodontist. =/
For all the clouds we've had lately, it seems we have not had much rain. A little Sunday night, a little yesterday... And here they are rescuing people from cars just one county over! Hope you get a nice soaking, Speedie!
.... I can hear my Poblanos singing "Haaaaaaallelujah!!!!!!" < =D
and my Phalaenopsis. I took it to work to share the blooms but it's gotten really dried out, so I brought it home - this is just what the doctor ordered.
I've heard on and off rain but the big storms don't seem to be hitting right here.
Poor Scott (son)- works most of the day each Saturday and Sunday in the boring shop, and as we well know our weekends have been fantastic and our weekdays not so great.
Aaawww, that's a shame for Scott!! Let's hope he gets a really nice weekday "off" soon!!
I just looked out the window a minute ago and saw blue sky and sunshine.. what the heck?? Hahahahaaa!!
We've gotten an inch in the last 36 hours! Good thing too because I thought I was going to have to bust out the hose.
We've had very few showers other than one last night, still overcast, Thank Heaven. Yesterday with the sun slipping in an out was horribly humid, just smothering. It's great for weeding and planting though, nothing wilts. LOL
The frequent rain and relative lack of hot sun has been a blessing for my swap plants, for sure.
We had showers again last night and this AM is overcast, but no down pours like areas around us have been getting. There are local flood warnings out.
We had a nice hard rain--not sure about total accumulation, but I liked the sound of it on the roof.
Yesterday's storm held out just long enough! My neighbor Martina had a pool party to celebrate the last day of school. The kids were in the pool until dinner time, and then the rain came. By then they were all pruney, as some had been splashing for 4+ hours (early dismissal on the last day).
I made mac & cheese casserole and the beans & rice dish that didn't make it to the spring swap. :-)
Ferocious thunderstorms in Lucketts last night. No trees or big branches down along the driveway and the electric stayed on, but the gravel is a mess - huge ruts everywhere. Mike will be regrading this evening I'm sure...
for a second I thought you said huge rats..........phew!
little rain yesterday but a whopper today!!! an inch for sure in a midafternoon storm
Ha ha - I always find it so amusing what your eye sees on quick reads...
about a year ago we had a very heavy rain, maybe the summer before, we had several inches ina day or something, anyway soon after that we found two young dead rats in our yard. I theorized they got driven out of the little swampy corner down in the woods. so maybe heavy rain makes me think of rats!
Eeeewwww, rats!!! No thank you!
We had wonderful rain all morning at work yesterday, all the way up to about noon or so. Then it partially cleared for a bit, then a very heavy sprinkle came back for the rest of the afternoon... WHILE I was out cleaning up more perennials. :) Was considerably cooler too, which made a really nice difference! =)
ewww Sally. I can identify though--after one of our torrential downpours a few weeks ago, I found the bodies of two unidentified rodents (voles?) in the backyard, and I had the same thought--that they were driven out by the heavy rains and then who knows.
We had rain pretty much all day yesterday--yay! Looking forward to the beautiful weekend we're supposed to have--perfect timing!
Yeah this spring has been great for me so far. Every weekend but one has been beautiful and on the one that wasn't, only Saturday was rainy.
Lots of flash flooding and accidents in and around Leesburg yesterday afternoon. I didn't have much more difficulty than normal congestion getting beyond Leesburg and up Rt 15 to Lucketts though. When I drove up to the house, I saw the irrigation system sprinklers doing their thing - I have it set for automatic mode to run at 5:00pm on Tue, Thu, and Sat. The rain sensor is broken, so I had it set on override - what a crazy sight to see sprinklers watering the garden in the rain.
It has been so wet that the grass hasn't been mowed since the Wed before the swap. No one felt like doing it last weekend and most weeknights have been raining. That grass sure is getting tall - will definitely have to get to it this weekend if it dries out by then.
From this morning's weather forecasts, the weekend is supposed to be beautiful.
Not much humidity--sunny on Sat. and Sun. cool nights...etc....
happy father's day! G.
thanks to Big Brother Google, I now have flower ads on my Intellicast page.
Yikes Terri, your grass is probably two feet tall!
After the huge deluge here yesterday afternoon and overcast and drippy into the evening. all of the slugs in my yard went on a walkabout. I relocated as many as I found. Easy when not holding a flash light! Who knew slugs like Milkweed?
where did you relocate them TO?
Sally, you can opt out of online behavior ads here: http://www.aboutads.info/choices/
I use an ad blocker called Ghostery. I'm always surprised when I'm not at my own computer and see how many ads there are online.
Drying out a little today. We really need a respite from the rain. Our ground is saturated, with water standing in spots yet. I could plant rice in the horseshoe pits.
SSG the Pop-up Ads are terrible.
This is the Adblocker I use: https://plus.google.com/u/0/100807459477993641578/posts/XHY5pAF6AKJ
But my primary browser is Chrome.
I also use Ghostery. It seems to work pretty well. Chrome is my primary browser, too.
Either Paul or Karen---
--Could you explain to me what these programs will eliminate?
I don't think I generally get ads....except when I am send a U-Tube--
there is always an ad one has to sit through.
--What kind of ads will this eliminate?
--Are they FREE?
--Is signing up for one of them complicated?
There is an option on DG Extras (??) or is it under my "preferences"
where you can choose to not allow ads. Is this different?
Thanks--i am not good at these kind of things.
Gita
Typ, thanks for that link! There were few things that had sneaked past my Ghostery settings that the site picked up on--excellent!
Gita, the ones that I have used are free--e.g., Ghostery, and the site that I just visited that Typ provided the link for above. They are also very easy to use--e.g., Ghostery runs in the background and you can pretty much not fuss with it. This works for general web browsing--e.g., when you open your browser and surf around or go to sites like FB or your email server. It tends to eliminate *targeted* ads. Someone else can explain the technology of it better than I can, but it eliminates or reduces the 'cookie footprint' we leave everywhere; this 'cookie footprint' lets advertisers know where we've been on the web, what we've clicked on and visited, and so then they choose ads they think will be most likely to catch our attention, and that's what we see. For me, I like being more invisible to the ad-trackers. SSG also says she's noticed a reduction in overall number of ads. So, those are some of the things to consider. Hope this is helpful.
Edited to add: I just checked Ghostery results for DG, and it had blocked 6 different trackers from gathering info from my visit to DG's website: DoubleClick Advertising, Google Analytics, Internet Brands Advertising, Magnetic Beacon/Behavior Tracking, Tynt Beacon/Behavior Tracking, and Yieldbot Beacon/Behavior Tracking. So, that was 6 different trackers tracking the fact that I had opened up the DG home page. By blocking them, they are not able to communicate to third parties that I have visited DG. For me, it is a desire to be as free as possible of the long tentacles of Big Business, and enjoy my web browsing in relative peace.

Thanks, Cat, for your explanation. I don't actually have an ad blocker on my computer.
My SIL, Mark, was here today for 3 hours trying to find the cause for everything
dragging and being hard to open--and slow as a snail---
He tracked down a lot of malware--which seemed to be the cause for many of this.
I now have a speedie computer back--and it is blocking a huge amount of
malware--as I get a pop-up showing each time that it is working.
My computer had become so slow--that it would take a total of 15 minutes
each night just to turn it off. Nothing was opening as it should...drag..drag....
Mark is very good at these kind of things--and most of all, he has the patience...
I think I am OK with what I now have. may not need any ad-blocker...
Gita
Catmint, I know exactly what you're talking about and I do NOT like it one bit! I have no need for any "Big Brother" monitoring my browsing habits!! I don't think it's all about "pop-up" ads either, but any sort of ads. For example, let's say I clicked on Gita's link showing the HD barbecue grills (which I did, THANK YOU G!!!).. then I wanted to go to weather dot com to check out what it's supposed to be like today.. weather dot com is RIDDLED with ads all over its site.. and lo and behold, one of the ads is for HD barbecue grills!!! Coincidence!? NO!!!!!!!! Grrrrrr!!
I use Firefox and that is supposed to have ad-blocking capabilities, but either I've not got some settings right, or I'm not using it right... or something. That HD grill add should NOT have shown up when I went to check the weekend weather!!
Yes, that's exactly it, Speedie! And I found it happening on FB simply if I liked a post that had words in it that the ad trackers would pick up on. E.g., let's say someone was talking about having a bbq this weekend and I clicked 'like' then all of a sudden there would be ads for bbq grills--just like you say! I found it pretty creepy. Anyway, the ad blocker has really helped with this.
Gita, so glad you got your malware problems fixed--it's wonderful to have someone in the family who can help with that sort of thing! Did he install a malware checker for you? I have Malwarebytes that I can run in addition to my antivirus program. I've also heard from computer people that it's good to have more than one anti-malware program, because every program misses some things, and so if you can run more than one of them, you'll pick up on more stuff.
