FIRST FLOWERS SPRING!!! Memorial Day Edition

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Hehehe, it's been so long I forget what I did to post.

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally not at all...done.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

you're a swwetie, Paul! so I hate to say I don't think I can get Clethra branches today...trust me tho, stray wild Clethra will stay on my radar.

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

Sedum dasyphyllum 'Major' might be the most adorable bloomers of all the sedum. It's so itty bitty!!!! :)
That's 'Dragonsblood' on the left for comparison.

Very nic Typ! I thought Dragon'sblood had more red in it though?

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

Not right now. For me, it was red all winter, but it's in full sun so I think it goes green for summer. I guess technically the tag said this is 'Fuldaglut', isn't that synonymous though? Bought from a source that I considered reliable.
Here's a pic of it from late winter.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

wow, the Sedum dasyphyllum 'Major' is beautiful, Typ! Sounds like we share a fondness for sedum??!! :-)

I can always tell what my favorite plants are because I seem to accumulate multiple cultivars of them--LOL! With the addition of Dragon's Blood from you today, I will have 8 different kinds of sedum! But of course now I have to put 'Major' on my wishlist, too! :-)

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

It's so hard NOT to collect sedum because they are so easy, cheap, and beautiful! I'll bring a little bit for you today. Might not have roots though. I just got this plant so really it will only be a tiny bit. But that's all it takes! :)

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Sweet Typ, we just planted a flat of that sedum at my FIL's house.

Beautiful gardens, Seq! You have so much in bloom right now.

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

Wow, Seq! You have so many things blooming! Hey can you share a few wide shots of your yard? I saw a branch from one of your blue trees and I was thinking it would be nice to see all of it. Perhaps in a separate thread? We should have more yard "tours" here in the MAG! Sean's gong to mow the lawn today so maybe I can do one too. :) Everyone is invited to join the party and share tours. I enjoyed seeing Aspen's gardens so much and want to see everyone's now!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Great pictures, Seq! Your lupines are huge! My Russell hybrid lupines are tiny in comparison.

I really like that noid annual, too. Does anyone recognize it?

That sophora's interesting. I've never heard of it before.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Sophora is very interesting.

Odenton, MD(Zone 7b)

My guess for the mystery annual is Scaevola, fanflower.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks ladies! I will need to do my annual picture set of the whole yard soon. I can post a few pics of the yard then. I was hoping to do it this weekend but I have so much planting to do from the swap that I might not have time Lol. Our front perennial bed hasn't even started blooming much yet. Once that takes off it's pretty gorgeous.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

It was really nice meeting you yesterday. I think Ric is out there unhooking the trailer and bringing the truck around to the parking/potting area. Can't wait to start planting the new plants.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Irises are still putting on a show. So is the Peony
The first pic is of the monster plant in the pond that we need to move. It is reminding me how pretty it is so I don't just toss the whole mess. LOL

The irises sure are putting on a show! I like them all!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

gorgeous, Holly!

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

Gorgeous, Holly!

Pic 1. Okay so no "blooms" here to show but I think the foliage on these plants looks pretty nice together.
Pic 2. 'Blackhart' Barley which I grew from seed to collect and dry for bouquets. Have to figure out when I'm supposed to harvest... Hasn't turned black yet though so I'm thinking now is not it.
Pic 3. My first attempt at growing Sweet Peas: SUCCESS! ...well, sorta. I planted a whole row and this is the only one flowering. It's growing among the Barley so I couldn't get a good picture of it. There are a few other sad little peas growing but I don't know if they'll ever get big enough to flower. We'll see.

I like the play of greens and textures also. Sometimes I like that better than blooms.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I agree--the different foliages are very pretty together! :-)

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I agree, that first pic the grouping is just lovely.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Very nice Typ! I'm all about the flowers myself but I can appreciate a nice foliage grouping. Mostly for me, foliage is there to make a nice background for the flowers. Sort of like a frame for a painting :) Some would even argue that the frame makes the painting.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Catbird, I'd never heard of fanflower before. I really like that blue/purple.

I know I'm a couple of weeks ahead of some of you, so I'm very curious to see what Holly and Seq are going to have blooming in a few weeks. I'm enjoying all the pretty foliage in my garden, but there's a definitely lull in blooms right now.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

I'm so excited. My lychnis coronaria and silene virginica are just started blooming!! I've wanted a Rose Campion for a while now and finally got one and planted it this spring. The Silene is gorgeous too, I can't wait to go home and see if there will be more blooms.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Oenothera 'Fireworks,' just starting to bloom. I thought they'd be shorter. I may need to transplant them next year.

Noid clematis. You can see one of the many dead fig trees in the background.

Another noid clematis. Are these pics sideways? Hmm.

Rose campion. I think this was from Jan or Buttoneer last year. Are these perennial or biennial?

Double Knockout. I know true rosarians look down on Knockouts, but they literally require no care except for a spring pruning. I don't even fertilize them.

What beautiful, full blooms, SSG! I'm looking forward to getting out there and checking things out--just got off work.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Nice blooms SSG :) I look forward to my knockouts coming out as well. I'm with you, I'd rather have a low maintenance rose. Even so, I still need to keep the JBs off them. Mine died to the ground over the winter, I was surprised.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Seq, your Knockouts died to the ground last year? That is pretty surprising. I thought they were hardier than that.

I'm not looking forward to JB season. I'm finding a lot of grubs, although they all seem to be infected with the milky spore disease.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Don't think the rose campion came from me, SSG.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I've been finding a lot of dead grubs too--thank goodness for the milky spore. I only have treated the backyard though--I still need to do the front!

I just planted the last of my new plants from the swap. Everything looks great! :-)

SSG and Seq, I'm way behind you on the early summer perennials coming out! A few things are blooming, though.

1) My Echinacea purpurea 'Rasberry Truffle' bloomed! I'm really happy about this because this plant did *not* do well for me last year. In fact, I almost managed to kill it off completely before I found a good spot for it! Glad to see it growing well and putting out an early first bloom this year. It and 'Secret Affair' are my first coneflowers to show buds so far this year-- I see some beginning to form on Rudbeckia 'Goldsturm' though!

2) My Coreopsis grandiflora 'Solanna Golden Ball.' I posted the first bloom for this just a few days ago, and here it is now bursting with blossoms! It was a real prolific bloomer for me all last season.

3) My Penstemon barbatus 'Prairie Husk' in full bloom now.

I also think I see the first shoots coming up of my tuberose--yay, at last! Glads and crocosmia all have lots of nice stalks now but nothing resembling a bud yet...

hi guys, how was the swap? nice blooms Cat

I have an interesting mystery bloom that just appeared in a dead, neglected hanging basket from last year. Only it wasn't a plant that was in the basket!! go figure... or at least I don't think it was

here is a pic: it is small, beautiful, and a velvet burgundy color as you can see

anyone know what it is?

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I got several rose campion plants from Gita last year. The first one just opened for me today but I was trying to show restraint by waiting until they were in full bloom before posting a photo. Oh, what the heck--restraint is overrated. ;-) SSG, is it possible you got some from Gita last year like I did?

1) Blossoms that I'm wishing would open soon on my agastache 'Purple Haze' and achillea 'Island Pink'.
2) The first two blooms of Gita's rose campion.
3) A view of my lavender with lantana and marigold blooming in the background, and chamomile fluffing out at its base.

Wind, it reminds me of Dianthus barbatus, Sweet William, except that it is so tall and leggy and has only one bloom at the top instead of a cluster. Has it been in a shady spot?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jeff--I wish you had posted that you wanted Rose Campions!

One of my beds is covered in seedlings. I was digging them up and
gave Paul a whole small tray of them.

Just today--I dug up a whole bunch and potted them in cell packs--as i was
going to dig up the bed to plant stuff in it.

The great thing with Rose Campions is that--Once you have them--you will always have them.

I can mail you a bunch of seeds--but they ARE Biennial--so it will be next year
that you will see any blooms...
The ones i dug up would bloom this summer...They grow fast!

Wonder how the little seedlings would fare being sent by mail????
I am a GOOD plant packer.....Want to D-mail me your address--and i will do my best
to get some to you. You are not that far.....

Another option--IF you know anyone that has these--their beds should be
full of seedlings as well..."Tis the season..........................

The "Mother" of all the seedlings. last year--in June.
