FIRST FLOWERS SPRING!!! Memorial Day Edition

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

I think it is a mock orange... apparently there are many kinds and the fragrance varies. Have someone else sniff yours too just to see if they do or don't detect fragrance. We all have different receptors and therefore we don't all smell the same fragrances!

maybe yours is: Philadelphus coronarius L.???

I have a mock orange from Sally that is blooming now. I'll have to take a pic of the blooms and leaves and compare it to yours. It does have fragrance

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Mock orange. Mine is not especially fragrant this year but it's been at least four years since I smelled it. Maybe the cool wet spring has diluted the scent.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Mine has a slight fragrance--but i sniffer in the middle of the day.
Many plants smell better as dusk approaches.

I always thought Mockorange had nice, double blooms...and VERY fragrant.

There could be so many other blooming shrubs i could have planted in this corner....
but, I guess I will wait a bit longer.

Thanks Dianna. Gita

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

no not normally double, and still don't think it came from me

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Mine is loaded with blooms can't wait to see it bloom.
Here are the dark peony getting ready to open
I have this really beautiful columbine pretty sure it came from last years swap can anyone ID it for me?

Not from me. It is a beauty though!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Holly, I don't recognize that columbine either, but it sure is pretty. My favorite columbine in my garden is a tall pink one you gave me. It has been blooming for a few weeks. I'm really hoping it starts spreading by self seeding and I'll also try to winter sow some this year.

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Wonderful Columbine Holly, though it surely didn't come from me either. Not sure which one she is.

Gita, your Mock Orange looks like Lewisii to me.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

It is very pretty and unique, Holly!

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

pretty columbine Holly

G. not all mock orange have double blooms... agree w/Speedie - could be Lewisii. you may be able to better ID yours by examining the underside of the leaves... are they fuzzy? if so, may be Philadelphus pubescens

Definitely looks like Philadelphus mock orange though. Supposedly butterflies like them. I haven't noticed any butterflies on ours yet, but it could be that there are not many butterflies yet flitting about

Jan, you've been holding out n us! Nice mix!

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Very nice Jan!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Looks great together, Jan! Your baptisia is huge!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Who knew upgrading my iPad would allow me to post pics again???!!!! I CERTAINLY DIDN't. Sheesh!! How many years has it been? However my pics are also taken with the iPad and if there is a way to focus better I don't know how. Sooo... Now I don't have an excuse except that after June 10th the only pics I'll be taking are from our trip northwest to Alaska.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Thanks y'all!

That Baptisia did get leggier this year. Maybe it is too shaded.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Can't wait to see those Alaska pics. You will have to start an North to Alaska thread. LOL

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Good idea!!! Hmmm...that sounds familiar. ; )

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Check this out. LOL

Weird Jan, I used to be able to upload pics right from my Iphone but now DG won't let me for some reason. I haven't figured it out but I'm pretty sure my phone is up to date.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I was actually wondering if maybe my baptisia is too shaded because it is smaller and not many blooms! :-).

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Seq, I had tried icab for a while and it worked, but then it didn't. So, I gave up and just live vicariously through all y'all. But, now I can.

Catmint, maybe we are both right. Hahahaha

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Holly, I think I can safely say, my pics won't come anywhere near those. We are soooo very excited!!!!

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

What's Icab?

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

wow the scenery, the history, sounds great!

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

ssg, the leaves and unopened flower buds on your mystery plants remind me of gladiolas, although the opened flowers sure don't look like traditional glads.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Muddy, I see what you mean. Very similar leaf structure to gladiolas.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

My glads are up but nowhere near blooming yet! SSG, if they are glads, do you think they might have escaped into your garden bed during the NC sort at your house?

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Catmint, I don't think it's a glad. I'm pretty sure the flowers don't match, but it's similar! It's growing along with the daffodils that were planted last fall. I'm wondering if this is a bulb that got mixed in with the daffodils at ADR or the grower's.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Trudged through wet grass to get some photos of a few brave blossoms that managed to open during this week's deluge. Wet-legged jeans now drying... ;-)

1) Phox 'Triple Play' open at last. I got it late last season--one of those straggly-looking October discounts. ;-) It looks pretty good now, but I wonder if it needs more sun or something? Does it usually bloom this time of year?
2) A blossom on my nasturtium--yay! I'm hoping this gets big enough soon to share with you soon, SSG, since I know it's on your wishlist!
3) Can't believe Buddleja 'Miss Molly' is beginning to bloom! For a plant that's supposedly invasive, this has been very tame in my backyard. Maybe it's the cultivar?
4) My coreopsis 'Solanna Golden Ball' is peeking out its first few blossoms. I loved this plant last year--tons of huge yellow blossoms. Then it got ill and I cut it back to practically nothing. Glad it's back!
5) My honeysuckle 'Scentsation' (Lonicera periclymenum) blooming at last!! It had a rough start last year when I placed it unwisely--glad to see it likes its new spot! :-)

That's a very interesting thought!! Maybe scan through the ADR online catalog?

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Catmint, good idea! I took a quick look and but couldn't find a match. I'll take better pictures and post them to the plant ID thread.

And no worries about the nasturtium! I think annuals generally don't like to be divided, so I'll try to start mine from seed.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh, look at the color on your butterfly bush!

I saw phlox blooming in Baltimore a couple of weeks ago, but mine are nowhere near close to blooming.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

very pretty Catmint

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

thanks, Sally and SSG. Maybe the 'Triple Play' (P. glaberrima)
is an in between bloomer--earlier than the garden phlox (P. paniculata) but later than the creeping phloxes?

I really fell in love with Miss Molly's color last year!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

SSG Are walking iris hardy in your area? I can't really see the bloom well enough but I was thinking maybe?

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

They are not hardy to our area. I bring mine every winter it is an easy plant. I have a yellow and will have plenty rooted for fall.

yellow walking iris?
too soon to place my order??

Paul, your yellow ''french iris'' is doing great here.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Seq. icab is an app that you can use pics with. Donniebrook had used it cuz she had trouble with her iPad also. I don't know how to describe it.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Oh ok. I use Picasa on my iphone but I don't think I can upload pics to the net with that right off the phone.
