How can I keep a King Baby Tut Papyrus in the house ? I figured using an urn w no holes. I'll put rocks on the bottom and vermerculite instead of soil.
I'm thinking that air would be able to circulate better w it, and not get a bad smell, which I'm afraid dirt would.
Thanks for all help!!
Carol :-)
Keeping Baby Tut Papyrus in the house.
You need to use good garden soil or purchase a soil made for aquatic plants and allow an inch or two of water to stand above that once it has settled. Vermiculite will not work at all-it will simply float around in the water. An urn with no holes if fine, but if you want to use rocks, but them on top of the soil around the plant. There is no purpose to putting them underneath.
If you don't allow organic matter, i.e., dead leaves, to stay in the water and you don't add manure there should not be any odor.
Standing water will go bad.
Drain it often and refill with new water.
Aquatic plants in nature live in streams or lakes where there is water movement which incorporates oxygen into the water. Some aquatic plants can send oxygen into the soil around their roots, but not a lot. Much better to keep fresh water around the plant.
I've never had a problem, but I do let the pot go nearly dry sometimes, so the evaporated water is effectively replaced now and then.
