Hi,
I cut up a small piece of potato and left it alone for a few days. Its got these tiny green shoots coming up. What can I do now with it? Can I just put it in soil and expect it to grow?
How do I ensure no one is eating up the potato inside the soil (thats what happened when I tried to plant carrots last time, there were nice greens on the top but the orange was eaten up).
Do I need to keep it wet, this potato piece, how big a pot do I need, when is the right time to put it in soil?
Can you grow potatoes from this?
I believe you can. Cut the potato up in sections with the growing buds on them.
For planting potatoes--please consult the appropriate Forum or search for Articles

I have never grown potatoes--so i do not know the details of.....

Potatoes may be treated so the little nubs that are sprouting do not do much more than what you see.
If you try to grow one that has been treated it will just rot.
However, I have bought potatoes at certain stores where they are not treated, and these grow.
The Answer is YES !!!!, put the piece of potato in a large stron woven bag (thick sack would do) or place in a very large pot , cover the plant with at least 6-8 inches of soil, soon as you see green tops appear from under the soil, add more compost / soil as you need to leave the potato to grow, make the tubers and don't stop watering IF the soil feels dry,
Sometimes people don't keep the green tops covered and the light gets into the tubers which when dug up from the soil, the tubers are green and you should never eat the green tubers, especially IF pregnant.
Good luck and best Regards.
WeeNel.
