Plant or wait?

Halifax, Canada

I have been rooting a cutting of my Schefflera. I made the cutting and stuck it in water for about a month now. This is what the root currently looks like. Should I plant it in soil now or wait? I change the water that the cutting is in often and only use distilled water.

I would do it as soon as you have the time. It's gotten the 'make roots' message, and has done so. The longer it waits, the more difficult the adjustment will be. Looks great!!

Agree - much better to pot in a solid medium ASAP. Roots that form in water are much different (physiologically) than roots that form in a solid medium; and water-formed roots transition to a solid medium poorly. Most break because they're brittle or die because they are so inefficient at using air from the soil.

How long did it take for your plant to show roots? How
long for the roots to get to the length in the photo?

I agree with Tapla. Sometimes I root plants in water if I don't have the time to set them up in vermiculite and soil. If you root in water it's a good idea to plant the cutting as soon as you see the roots beginning to grow. If you wait until the roots elongate, they become too used to water and will not transition well to soil. Keep a close eye on them and get them planted in potting soil!
