Magnolia just finished flowering. Leaves were healthy now some have gone & the plant looks chewed at the tops.
High flying snails or a bird fight? Oh well! What's next?
Magnolia Stellata looks to have bits eaten off
How about something that is energetic enough to climb the plant? Do you have earwigs in the UK?
How about a flying bug like a grasshopper?
A lot of pests hide during the day and eat at night. Take a flashlight out in the evening or early morning and see if you can find something.

A Pigeon was one suggestion.......knock over.......
I suppose we have Earwigs in UK...only ever seen 3 in 60 yrs
I used to go slug hunting with a torch one of the neighbours thought there was a peeping tom
I had 2 Himalayan poppies growing nicely....both eaten this week
cheers
Deer, Rabbits, slugs / snails, earwigs are a plenty here in UK.
Any chance you could send a picture of both the Magnolia and the Blue Poppy, this would help show the type of chewing that has happened.
Meanwhile try keep checking night and day to see IF you can find the culprit.
Once more people see some pictures then I feel sure you will get answers.
Best Regards.
WeeNel.
What blue poppy? None left.... The magnolia tip is the same as b4 so no increase. It is next to the azalea in the pink ro pic.....Probably small slugs for the poppies....Carnation & other stuff untouched
cheers
