Post your unmarked plant pics here so you can ID your stuff!!
Here's mine! What is it and from who did I get it?
Also, who gave me the LA irises in the grocery bag with the amaryllis? What kind of amaryllis is it?
Post N. Central TX RU "What is this?" Thread
I think that is a "snake herb" (dyschoriste linearis) me:
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/66818/#b
Steph, you took a grocery bag of LA irises from me but I was not aware of an amaryllis bulb so maybe it was not. We discussed it because I had two bags left on my table top and you asked for one. We did not pretrade it. My grocery bag was Kroger or Tuesday Morning.
Thank you both! I remembered your bag of LA irises, Marty and have already planted those. Are they purple?
Thanks, Dennis! I remembered it was Snake-something, but couldn't remember all of it!
Stephanie, they are not what most people think when they think purple irises. They are reddish-purple, I call magenta, not the royal purple so prominent in iris colors.
Great! Thanks! Can't wait to see them bloom, provided they make it through the summer.
Stephanie I brought you the huge spider lily bulbs (2) http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/71140/ and the iris are LA iris they were the whole plant sticking out of the bag I call them blue but most say purple.
Thanks! I couldn't remember who they were from and wanted to be sure to put it on my list. Thanks for the correction on the white spider lily bulbs. How deep do those need to be planted? That's a huge bulb!
You can put them into the ground and leave about an inch or two of the neck above the ground. Yes they are huge. I was excited to be able to share them. They will reproduce easy at the size also. Enjoy as I know I did giving such huge bulbs away
ILJ99 - I think you just answered my question. I have a bag from you with a white spider lily bulb, some Amaryllis bulbs and some bulbs with very long leaves. So those must be the LA irises. Their bulbs kinda look like those small red onions one can find from time to time. Right?
Back to the Amaryllis, do you pot them or plant them? But if you live in Baytown, that's a whole 'nother climate from Dallas.
Again, thank you Sandy!
TXFC - Those small bulbs if a mass of tiny brown skin bulbs might be Crocosmia from BAJA.
Marty, I planted my magenta LA iris (a big Thankyou again for those!) in a pot yesterday so they don't get lost in the other colors while the iris bed is still a mess. That color is gorgeous!
Sandy I also got two types of bulbs from you :) I'm guessing they are the mangrove spider lily and amaryllis, but I don't know how to tell them apart! The first one is very bulbous and have straps a few inches long emerging from the neck. The tips are rounded and the leaf margin is smooth. The second type of bulb is less bulbous, like it's been on a diet lol! But I know it's different because the straps are much longer, tips taper to more of a pointed shape and leaf margins are serrate, although you can barely see the "teeth" without straining. Any idea or am I being to OCD here? LOL
It was so nice to have met the both of you, you guys are great! :D
I brought crocosmia (aka montbretia) Joey Hoey, and they did look
sorta/kinda like tiny baby spring onion bulbs.
I had them in a box on top of the table and wrote "take some" on
the box.
I should have more this fall.....
My mistake this year, was two-fold:
I dithered around waiting for the date
of Round Up, and dithered some
more waiting for the weather to warm
up and improve !
My bad.
Hope to do better next time around !
I bet those came from Dennis and they might be Lyreleaf Sage.
Looks like a possible candidate Stephanie, and the pot looks the same as the agave I got from him :)
I have 2 varieties of it, also probably from Dennis. One has leaves that look like a dandelion and throws me for a loop every single time it comes up! I remember him carrying his tray in with something that looked like lettuce, which these do.
I think those are Golden Groundsel.
Hmm, either way I like it :))
Either way it's for shade.
I think that I had labeled everything that was pre-traded, but I did have some golden grounsel that I gave away so that could be it.
SPWD I gave you 2 Amaryllis bulbs and 1 spiderlily. The spider lily is bigger by probably 2 1/2 times than Amaryllis.
Doesn't look like lyreleaf sage to me
Okay that answers my question then, the big fat guys are the amaryllis, I hope I didn't screw up planting them outside under the protection of a redbud. I'll look into it more when we get back home Monday. Thank you so much for answering since I know you're not feeling well.. Hope you she someone to make sure you're eating and getting enough rest! :))
The one that is shaped like a spaghetti squash is the spider lily.
The amaryllis will do well under the redbud tree. The ones in the ground do better than in pots I find.
Thanks I am feeling a little better but going to bed early :)
But ILJ99 is in Baytown (based on her info on her screen name). Should Amaryllis be planted in the ground up here in Dallas?
Gotta go or I'll be on the computer all day. Big bro coming in from OKC and I feel compelled to clean my house. Or at least tidy it up.
I second the Golden Groundsel, I brought several some traded and some up for grabs. Mine should have had a tag, but still looked like those. The GG will take full sun, will spread and is evergreen. It blooms early in the spring on tall shoots. I love it!
Amaryllis can be planted in the ground here. I see them all over the place.
Cool. Sun? Shade? In between?
I've seen them in all kinds of conditions, but personally, I'd think they would do best in dappled shade or morning sun and mid afternoon to afternoon shade. (Think of the conditions in the front of many houses.)
I want to thank all those wonderful people who brought me quart and gallon plastic pots, as well as molded plastic trays, you guys really fixed me up.
Thank You, Thank you, Thank you.
Josephine.
Josephine - I have a never ending supply of the molded plastic trays, or what I'd been calling the non-flat flats. Unless they change their ways (and they should), Nicholson Hardie Garden Center throws both flats and non-flat flats in the trash every day. Tsk, tsk. They have 2 locations, maybe a mile apart and I live right smack dab in the middle of them. If you ever want to meet up in Arlington I can bring you a trunkload of them. They really are good for carrying plants so that the plants don't fall and splatter everywhere. (I'm always wanting to go to Fort W. to the museums and/or to visit cousins there so could easily arrange something with you. Prob. best to do this thru DMail.)
Aha thanks!! Silly me, I misread above, Sandy. So the smaller ones are amaryllis, and the larger one is a spider lily. And the 2 orphans are golden groundsel :)
I moved everything from roundup from my shady front porch to my not quite as shady back porch where my MIL can water until we get back. I grouped them tightly so they can insulate each other more and hopefully not dry out too quickly. Can't wait to plant out something else when we get home! It will probably be the blackberries from Stephanie, thy have been singing their siren song to me..
Josephine I'm so glad you were able to use them. My friend takes them to the dump if I don't rescue them first. She even burns them if she has too many.. Eek! Should I start saving them now??
Becky, almost anyone who participates in RU would probably take some home each tim. I think those of you who have access to the nursery pots would be really appreciated for bringing some each time if it's not too much trouble for you to collect and save them. I for one, feel this way.
I can get lots of gallon pots if my friend still will let me as she is mad at another friend of mine. I really could use the quart size and 2.5-3 gallon size and larger. rescue all you can. Please. I have tried to find a landscaper the last 3 yrs who would save them but so far no luck.
One or two of you who received plants from me got a Tecoma stans volunteer in the pot. The tiny seedling's first leaves look like a 4 leaf clover. Very few seedlings look like this so check your plants and if you would like to save it, dip it out with a spoon and up pot it into a 4" pot of its own. Im sorry I cant remember which pots and to whom I gave them.
I don't think I got anything potted from you, but I always enjoy tagalong plants from swaps!
That is great Joan, I will dmail you when i have an idea of what days I will have available.
ILJ99 - I was supposed to bring you two 2.75 gallon pots that a neighbor gave me. I didn't pay much attention to where I put them b/c I figured they'd stand out. Well come time to pack and I couldn't find 'em anywhere. So I found them today. They were inside a bigger plastic pot (that I was keeping) and had turned upside down. Think it's time to start wearing bandanas again to keep my head tied on and my brain from falling out!
