HELP SAVE OUR TABEBUIA

North Escondido/Hidd, CA

Our 12-15' Tabebuia that we planted about a year and a half ago got blown down in our high winds a couple of days ago. We have put it upright again and have it supported. Filled in holes around roots with potting soil and thoroughly soaked it with water. Leaves are looking pretty droopy. Anyone know if we can save this tree somehow?

You have done the right things already, Any tree that has been wrenched from it's roots and toppled over will be in total shock and can take several weeks / months to SHOW some recovery.
The tree needs to start to make new fine roots that seek water, make sure the whole root area gets plenty water IF the tree is in hot sunshine, even IF there is a lot of shade for the tree, it will still require the attention your giving it for a good while until it looks like recovery has taken place and no longer need full attention, you have to remember there is a year and half of growth and now it needs that time to regrow more roots for stability, taking up nutrients, water and making new growth.

As regards the support to keep it upright, I would place a thick stake either side of the trunk leaving a space either side of about six inches between trunk and stake each side, make sure these 2 stakes are hammered into ground securely.
Then screw a 2X1 inch baton across ways at about 3 inches below the top of the stake (looks like Goal post) next, you use a pair of ladies tights and wrap this around the cross baton, place a piece of rubber or foam between the tree trunk and baton this protects the trunk, and cross the tights around the trunk and baton, (figure eight is good) don't pull the strapping too tight as the nylon hosery will stretch a little when the tree begins to put on growth, after about a year, loosen the strapping and tie off again.

If I ever have to plant tree's, I insert a couple of empty clear plastic juice cartons with bottom removed, insert the narrow end way down into the soil at the root area, leave a couple of inches plastic above the soil, then when you water, fill the cartons up a couple of times and this gets the water way down to the roots where it is mostly ewquired, also its a neet way of adding feed IF needs, leave these in place a couple of years or longer till you think the tree or shrub is able to support it's self.

Hope the tree will pick up soon but till then, just keep caring as you are and I'm sure you will get rewarded.
best of luck and Kind Regards.
WeeNel.
