I planted a couple of small sego palms about 15-20 years ago and then just enjoyed their growth whenever we were home (we were away a good bit). When our Alabama temperature dropped to a record low, we were away and they were not covered. A week or so later, we trimmed off all the fronds (first time they'd been trimmed at all). The temp dropped again. They survived and now have sprouted new fronds; the female's are about 18" high and the males are just emerging. My question: Quite a few pups (about 10 per plant) are living at the base, one of them larger than a pineapple. Some have been there for years. Should we try to remove them now or wait until winter?
