Its takin 15yrs and my moss has takin over about 60% of my yard...wooohoo!...now I'm woundering what I can put on my moss to keep the rogue grass from coming back??....and it's also takin about 15yrs for my wife to embrace the moss.I cut he grass short in the thought that the moss will over take it but to no avail..
Yard moss question
Moss is a little bit weird about herbicides.
If you try anything, test in a small area. If the moss dies then dig out any contaminated soil.
There are 2 classes of herbicide to think about:
Pre-emergent herbicides stop the weeds by killing the newly emerging root just as it comes out of the seed. These may have some activity against established plants that are shallow rooted by stunting the growth of their roots. Not sure how mosses respond, since they do not technically have roots the same as higher plants.
Post emergence herbicides kill actively growing weeds, and may also kill moss.
Just to say, I'm with you about getting the grass out of my moss, though I just pull and whack.
Had same problem here in Hillsborough NC with my husband. He did not want moss. He loves grass. I told him can't grow grass - not enough sun in the woods..too many tree roots..etc. but BAGS of grass seed and several years effort AND truckloads of sod .... with only a season each year of weak grass to show for every new effort has convinced him. .... Can't grow grass but moss sure is happy. Well, now stuck with a bunch of stubborn scraggily grass clumps in the middle of large swaths of moss. Afraid to treat. I just yank it but do lift perfectly good moss along with it. Would love to find something that works on this hubby "imported" grass. I thought weedkillers/herbicides work on grass lawn weeds but leave the grass unaffected --- so how will the grass issue be resolved even if the moss is not harmed by these products? I thought only grass killer - like Roundup - will work to kill grass. That for sure will also get the moss.
It sounds like parts may be too sunny for the moss, where the grass is so happy? Maybe you could put creeping Thyme or something similar in those spots? Creeping little Sedums. Or maybe you need another shade tree?
Sedum would be so great --- but if you have deer......
Can you folks post pics of your mossy areas here? I wanna see!! =)
Oh, that's the one place I can't allow moss to grow here, where people are walking on bricks, steps, way to slippery. Rosie, when you accidentally pull up moss, you can put it right back, or move it to where more is needed.
I wish I had a picture of a beautiful moss patch to post! There is only scattered little patches. I'd love to have it under some trees where the ground is bare now, but we're impatient and have decided to put brick colored pavers under there, a giant patio. Maybe the cracks between them will be distant enough that moss is OK, people can still walk.
Speaking of walking, how often can one walk on moss without making it look bad? I've always wondered about that?
A beautiful (Japanese?) garden with mossy ground and a hundred shades of green shrubs and trees always looks so perfect. My fav thing about hiking through the woods is the mosses.
I look forward to any pics people could share too.
No probs walking on the moss - it keeps between the cracks. The pavers provide real good traction. Like that design on the bathtub ...rough square grid on smooth porcelain built into the surface. No slipping. I think if moss grew over the pavers - that might be issue but so far so good. I have a devil of a time with slippery flagstones but no moss on those. I wash
Every 4- 6 mo with bleach and water. Looks great and clean to the eye ...but after a rain...... Wheeeee slippery. Bleach water works.
Excuse the mess - having bath renovated past 4 weeks and having the trades tromping in and out -- so have not been back there to pull out the grass plugs or maintain from the winter.
Purple - yes, I have been patching and starting moss when I pull out moss with the pulled grass. It goes in and settles nicely. From the construction zone, here are some photos of mossy areas. The early morning sun is on the ground these photos but it is about 85 percent moss coverage on the north and east side
