Orange tree leaves fallen !!

Cupertino, CA

Hi, I am a beginner with fruit trees and this orange tree was my first. My Navel Orange tree leaves started falling off gradually a few months ago and then last week there were ten leaves remaining. The last of the leaves fell off. The soil was right, I wasn't overwatering nor over fertilizing. I dug up the tree gently to check the roots. Roots seemed ok to me, but I saw 2 white grubs disappear into the soil. There are healthy earthworms in the soil too. I planted the bare orange tree into a container filled with fresh soil that drains easily to help heal the roots if possible. Can the leaves grow back ?? Can I plant another fruit tree in the same area where the orange tree was ?? My apple tree and grapes are doing fine that are growing about 10-20ft away respectively.

Apple and Grape get different pests from Citrus, so it is not surprising that they are OK and the Citrus is not.

The grubs might have something to do with it.
Also, when you say it started losing leaves a few months ago, was this when the weather was still very cold? Citrus do not like it too cold.

It may regrow, I would give it some time.
Careful not to water too frequently when it has no leaves. It is not using much water now.

If you see the twigs starting to shrivel, that is bad. Probably won't recover.
In the warm-mild weather we are now having it ought to grow right back out again, if it is going to.
