Well not only do I get privacy, but I get this beautiful show every spring. It even hides my shed from the right side, lol. Behind it is my neighbors abbreviate, looks nice in the one pic though :-)
Forsythia -How to hide yourself from your neighbors, lol
It is a spectacular sight Dannyboy, we have them in abundance here in UK, the best time to prune it is right after flowering is over, only cut the stems from this years flowering as the flowers come from the previous years wood / Stems.
If you don't prune, then as it grows, all those butter yellow flowers will just keep going further up the shrub (it can become a tree) and you will have to look high into the clouds to enjoy the flower show., give a feed after the flowers have past, even give a mulch of humus compost if you make your own.
Have a great gardening season and just keep going outside to marvel at nature at it's best.
Best Regards. WeeNel.
Fantastic show! Forsythia are indeed very nice for a strong burst of color when many other things are still dormant.
As WeeNel suggests, selectively remove certain older branches to the ground for the optimum flower show each year, and to maintain the size and shape that seems just right to screen things.
Great advice from both of you, thanks. I mentioned in another thread that I just bought the house in the fall, it was my parents house, the home I grew up in :-) that same forsythia has been there for over 30 years. Or at least A forsythia anyway, lol. I'm sure it has grown new ones and lost old ones along the way. The best part is I get to redo what they left unkept, and now add a whole lot of my own! Thanks all, happy gardening! ;-)
Danny
