Grow sweet peas and clematis together?

Tobyhanna, PA(Zone 5a)

Hi all,

What do you think of growing sweet peas and clematis together? I have a Jackmanii that usually doesn't bloom til mid-summer. Just a lot of green leaves to cover the trellis til then. I was thinking about planting some sweet peas at the base this spring. I figured at least I would have flowers to cover the trellis for quite awhile before the clematis flowers start to open. They both like the same growing conditions - rich limey soil, water, and sunshine. What do you think?

Thanks,
Jane

Sounds possible. Are these annual sweet peas?

Ayrshire Scotland, United Kingdom

I would be inclined to choose another climbing plant to accompany the Jackmanii, All sweet peas can very quickly become a tangled mass of tendrils, the stems and tendrils can be like wire and cut into the Clematis, IF the sweet pea's are the Annual type, I have visions of your Clematis being chopped to bits when you try to untangle the two plants for autum / spring tidy up.
Both plants being grown together means you need to have a good strength of support too.

Best Wishes. WeeNel.
