After more years than I can count, I am again going to grow veggies in the garden. Seriously, last time I was a teen, now I am 70 and have forgotten more than I ever knew. I planted a garden in 2012 that was a disaster which I contributed to not getting seeds in the ground until early June. Last year, I got everything planted around the 10th of May. Last year was a TOTAL disaster. The only results were some onions that came from sets, some sweet corn that was barely there and that is it. I planted Radish (Cherry Belle), Green Onion (from sets),
Cucumber(Straight Eight) - NOTHING, Cantaloupe (Summer Snack Hybrid) NOTHING, Red Onions - Large Dry Onions results were miniature, Spinach NOTHING, Broccoli NOTHING, Lettuce NOTHING.
Best Boy & Big Boy Tomato - GREAT, but I did not like the taste which my wife did. The seeds planted some of which were new, some from previous year. All were watered properly with drip irrigation and fertilized.
Does anyone have any ideas whatsoever why this garden failed almost completely last year? It was in the same area as the previous year and got fair results considering everything was planted really late but last year had all planting done by May 10 and ZAP!
Dying Garden
Are you in Alaska or Florida or in between. Makes a big difference.
also planting the same thing in the very same spots year after year will result in poor performance from depleted nutrients. what they call rotating crops--put a different type of plant in place of what you had in there last year to rotate them around and give the soil a better chance at balancing out. also compost is an absolute must for continued production. and to check for drainage problems (too slow or too quick to drain).
spinach, broccoli, and lettuce should be sewn early spring while its still cool, as they do not prefer the harsh heat of summer.
hope i was able to help out :)
Last year was a bad year for almost everyone. The summer was hot & no rain. My garden failed also. That happens. Thats why if a person depends on the garden for their food, they have to be very serious about their garden. One cannot plant cold weather veggies in the spring, summer, and one cannot plant warm weather veggies in the winter. I see that you have mixed your veggies into l planting. Not all veggies get planted in the spring. Only the warm weather ones. We call it Timing. The Time has to be right, when one plants a certain veggie seed.
for us, last summer was just too darn wet and soggy, i had quite an array of tomatoes fall to disease because of it, BER, blight, you name it
Last year was one of the best years I've ever had for gardening but we need MUCH more information in order to help. First of all where are you located? The veggies you mentioned need to be planted/sown at different times, as they have different temp requirements.
I notice the non subscriber that started this thread is long gone.
