Oh Terry, thank you for notifying us. We will miss Darius.
Your Neck of the Woods part 7 Galloping into Spring
She will definitely be missed.
I am so sorry to hear that. Darius was one of those posters who always had something wise to say. I didn't realize her health had taken a turn for the worse. I had promised her my father-in-law's hearing aids, and then we couldn't locate them. I guess I can stop looking. So sad.
I had read her mention some health issues, serious ones, though not long ago she hoped to move to Asheville. I hope she was at peace. I can hardly believe it.
Oh that is very sad news! I'm sorry to hear that.
I will miss Darius, I always looked forward to the wit, wisdom, and charm her post brought. I looked forward to meeting her but alas...
"In the sweet by and by,
We shall meet on that beautiful shore; "
You brought this to mind:
Crossing the Bar
By Alfred, Lord Tennyson
Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.
Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;
For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar.
My heart hurts.
Ric, that's a fitting tribute... no more stress or chaos, her strong spirit is now free to focus on the peace and wisdom she shared with us all.
Gosh Ric, that was so beautiful.
When I read Terri's post up there, at first I just sat here... WHAT!?!?!? I could not believe it, and could not even move. Oh man, this is such really sad news.
David---
Just went out to start digging up the fern....did the big one...
Pulled it apart, but came back inside......It is freezing out there!!!
Will continue later. It is supposed to be 70* today!
Anyway--digging up this clump, I found the original tag.
This fern is a Korean "Tassle Fern"--Family--Dryoptericlaceae
Polystichum Polyblepharum.
You were correct--except for the "Rock"--and here it says "tassle"....
YOU GO!!!
In the description it says:
Evergreen fern--has deep green, glossy fronds with silver reverse.
Use for mass plantings and naturalizing.
Can't say I have noticed the "silver reverse'.......Hmmmmmmmmmm..
Thanks again--Gita

Well it is gorgeous out now!!! Get back to it. Hahaha
Paul--are YOU gardening on these beautiful days?
None of us have a clue WHAT you are doing! You have become the "silent one"...
I have oodles to do--First thing--I have to finish my seeding.
Did a bunch--and they are up--but got busy and the rest of the seeds are just sitting
on my DR table.
Most of them are Zinnias. They come up fast--not to worry.
Stay well! Gita
I wish. I need to do some mulching this week and leaf cleanup. My phone was garbage for a while so that limited my time.
Heh heh, I had to stop and think for a minute -- posting on DG and phone was garbage -- where's the connection!? LOL, I'm getting OLD!! < =/
Does that mean your phone is all better now Paul, and we can expect to see you more?
I've not done one darned yardening thing at home, but have done TONS of it at work. (guess that's why I'm too pooped to pop at home).
Here's how things are shaping up at the Nursery. Just a 'few minor' changes going on these days....
The greenhouse as gone from "this" and "this" (pics 1 and 2)
to
This, that, and this other! (pics 3-5). Tables removed, walls built, and shrubbery and topiaries to be strategically placed to make it more inviting.
More to come... ;)
A nice inviting look speedie. I have GH envy, that looks like at least 24x40'. Pushing your flowering plants a week or two ahead of other local competitors and prominently displaying them will increase sales.
Looking good Speedie. Hey are you selling those Shooting Star Hydrangea's? I'd order one to be delivered to the swap or picked up if or when we have a DG Day at your Nursery. LOL
Looks great!!!
Got my second epidural steroid injection this morning. The first one made a huge difference and the Dr thinks this because I had such good results that the second one should be back into the same shape I was in before this happened. Here is X my fingers.
*_* Here's my X'd eyes for good success for you!! =)
oh golly, fingers crossed, prayers said, etc... we want to hear all about your fabulous vacation at the spring swap!
fingers, and toes crossed!!
Sally, I hope you're not driving with those toes crossed! < =P heeheeheee
Goodness Holly, sorry, meant to reply to your question as well yesterday but was swamped for time and plum forgot! I'm not sure if we'll carry the shooting star Hydrangea or not, but since you mentioned it, I started looking through my vendor lists yesterday. If I see it, I will order a few for you!! =)
Hoping that today's weather really does get "funky" AFTER I get to work this morning -- we have SOOOOO much more ordering to get done and a lull in the customers would be a great help! ;)
Got a few "before" and "after" pics to share, including that "slot wall" I mentioned:
First: That wall -- before "slot"
Second: That wall now.
Third: Distant shot of the "bulb row" wall. That wall is also going to be slot-wall; it's on order and should arrive this week. There will be those metal 'baskets' on the wall to hold all the bulbs, plus a WHOLE LOT more.
Fourth: Close-up of "bulb row", now including ALL the bulbs we have. The middle rack, first three shelves, hold all the bulbs I got from Bill at Caladium Bulbs 4 Less. Our IT-and-all-around-knows-everything guy made those pretty signs to hang on the front of each section of the crates, to show a pic of what it is and give info and prices.
Last: A distant shot of the front door area when standing under the pergola. Nice colour from the Forsythia (looks MUCH better in person!!), but we NEED more pots!! Can't wait for that order to come in!!!!!!
And now it's time to hit the shower to get ready for work. Y'all have a wonderful and SAFE day today!!! =)
It looks really good Speedie, Thanks for ordering the Shooting Star. Ric just loved that.
Another Hoo-Hum day, overcast and cold. Good Grief, I just looked outside and it's flurrying.
I decided to stay in this AM and vacuum, at least I can make it bright if not cheery. I want Saturday back, every day.
Speedie
If you find a vendor for'Shooting Star' Hydrangea make sure it is the real thing!
** 'Shooting Star' is Hydrangea macrophylla 'Hanabi.' ** A tissue culture firm introduced 'Hanabi' as 'Fuji Waterfall' which is really wrong since there is also a distinctly separate plant that is the serrata form Hydrangea serrata 'Fuji-no-taki' (which translated means Fuji Waterfall). Terra Nova also has H. m. Hanabi--sometimes called 'Sumida-no-hanabi' (which means fireworks over hanabi), hence the confusion as to the 'Fireworks' name. *** 'Hayes Starburst' is a completely separate plant, of the native species Hydrangea Arborescens, found in Alabama by Hayes Jackson.
BOTTOM LINE, IF YOU BUY A SHOOTING STAR, HANABI, FIREWORKS, OR FUJI WATERFALL (but not H. serrata 'Fuji Waterfall', only H. macrophylla)...ITS ALL THE SAME"
Speedie, how great your job must be! Serious envy here :)
So well organized. Can you come do my shed now?
=8^)
Speedy - What amazing before and after pics! The customers are going to love the new look.
Ric, I'm with you on wanting Saturday back. Our world has turned white again, and at least an inch of snow already.
Great info, Coleup.
Speedie, the nursery is really getting an inviting and upscale look! Love the slot walls... also love that the new owner is willing to make long term investments like that. The bulb baskets will work well, too... I especially like the kind that hang at a slant so you can see the bulbs from across the room and reach in easily (like a potato bin?)
That's another thing you could try, with people more interested in trying to grow their own food... I've seen snazzy "potato bags" with equally snazzy prices, probably a good mark-up item. You could probably pick up "samplers" of various potatoes at your local farm store to resell... or give them out free with the purchase of a potato grow bag. Everybody likes "free!" LOL
I'm going to try some potatoes in bags this year (easy to "hill up," easy to harvest), but I'm planning to use empty bird seed bags, the kind with the woven texture. I think they're somewhat permeable, and I'll poke a few extra drainage holes in the bottom. I'm going to roll them down, then roll up a few inches at a time as I add soil (might just use something light like compost & pine fines, which would be great to dump on the garden in the fall).
An impressive organization job, Speedie! Wish I had that kind of talent :o).
AWESOME info Judy, thank you a TON!! I most DEFINITELY want to make sure to get the correct "Shooting Star" Hydrangea for Holly and Ric! You are a GEM!! ♥
Thank you guys, it really is fun to have so many toys at work to play with! ;) I can't take all the credit though, I gotta say; I sure didn't do all that by myself!! Like Critter said, it's an amazingly wonderful Blessing to have a boss who is willing and excited to make such a long-term investment. The goal: To NEVER have to say "No, we don't have that" to ANY customer - EVER. And yes Ma'am, those baskets will tilt a little bit, but they are very "open" - enough so that the bulbs inside will be well visible to anyone walking in or by. We are already checking into seed potatoes, but never heard of "potato bags". Will certainly have to check into those, they sound so inviting!!
Had the funky weather and customer lull I was hoping for, so the next "big" order has been completed and placed. Pheewww. Now, all that's left is PLANTS -- but DARNIT, we keep getting told it's still too early. This Winter really has wreaked havoc, I tell ya! < =/
Oh, but I got one delightful surprise today! Boss told me that he ordered some moss JUST FOR ME and "MY" fairy garden stuff!! < =D YAAYY, what a thoughtful Boss!! I'm gonna have sooooooo much fun selling this stuff!!! < =D
Speedie, It all sounds so very nice. I hope you have a great season and make tons of sales. To pay off all the hard work you and your new boss have invested in this new enterprise.
Holly, I hope the second shot worked for you as well as the first one did!
Speedie, I love to organize, but I'm not very good with keeping up with my own system. ;) I'd probably be much better at it if I had to do it for my job. I can't wait to take a field trip down there and see your hard work in person!
Here's a version of potato grow bags at Park Seed: http://parkseed.com/Product.aspx?p=96884&CAPCID=21621522372&cadevice=c&gclid=CNnHuLPvrr0CFY1xOgod920ANQ&CA_6C15C=1874882741
Not to discourage you with those potato grow bags, because I think this could only happen to me. I tried them two years ago. I was so excited seeing them grow and was anticipating a great crop of potatoes. Well, we had a few friends over hanging out at the pond one evening, and we got the bright idea to go get those potatoes and cook them on the grill. There was so much anticipation dumping them out and when we saw what they were, there was a moment of stunned silence and then full out belly laughter. My great crop of potatoes were 3 the size of marbles and 2 the size of eggs LOL. From the top they looked very healthy with prolific leaves. I have no idea what I did wrong.
Speedie--
Are YOU going to have a fairy garden--or is this going to be a demo at work?
I think we all convinced Saly to have one---dying to contribute to it....
What will be YOUR perfect Faerie Garden???? What will it have--
and what do you NOT have that you want? My house is full of "stuff"....
G.
