Your Neck of the Woods part 7 Galloping into Spring

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

And you just know that they never even stopped to see if you were OK.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Glad you are feeling better, Holly. Hoping the new stent doesn't develop the same problem, Ric. Warmer weather seems like a good idea ALL around.

Moron doesn't begin to describe that driver. Curve and a buggy to boot. It's amazing there aren't more motor vehicle vs buggy accidents.

Aruba!?!? Holly/Ric, is that where you're going!?!? Oh boy!!! < =) Jill, are you going too!?! Oh BOY Oh Boy!! < =D

Yes, all is well now, and Holly, you're right, he never slowed or stopped to check. Tsk tsk. How are you feeling after your foray into the Lampost bed? I sure hope you didn't over-do it! You just GOTTA be ok for your trip to Aruba!! =)

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Trip is to the Bahamas, Freeport area. We are really looking forward to going and I am slowly starting to think that I just maybe well enough to go in a few more weeks. I got a little over half of the bed cleaned out and today was the first day without pain meds. I'm a little tired and slightly uncomfortable but certainly not in pain.

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Oh good, I'm so glad to hear that!!!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Gentle gardening is great therapy!!!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Nope, I'm not going along, other than vicariously... I guess the "here we come" was meant to sound like cheering them on; sorry for the confusion!

I'm still sore from Thursday... ended up doing 2 pool exercise sessions, then went back in the water with Joyanna after her ballet class. Trying to get back into digging shape!

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Oh, well, if you're trying to get back into digging shape, I've got a shovel over here you could use.. ;) heeheeheee

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

The snow is almost gone. Hoorah, for warmer temps. The clean-up can begin. After the cleaning then some real work. LOL The pics below are our current snow level!

Good and Bad news: Jamie missed the deer but not the big oak tree last night about 10:30. Jamie is fine but his old work car, a Saturn SL1 is toast. The best part was that Deb and JR were driving separately.

Glad Jamie wasn't hurt. Bummer about the car though. Over the last 10 years, I have hit 4 deer and probably missed 100 more. Always car damage, but thank god I was never hurt either. They are so over populated here, so you always have to be aware when driving. Sometimes it just can't be helped, they truly speed out of nowhere and there is no avoiding them.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Going to my Dr.'s appt. Monday--I am driving on York Rd inLutherville--a busy, busy big road..
Stores and businesses on both sides--no woods in sight...

All of a sudden, this doe runs out on the road--all traffic stops--she is so disoriented..
Runs across this road--stops in front of a store. Runs back the other way--right in front f me.
Tries to run across again--stops in the middle of this 4 lane road...very confuses ed..
I see a chance to move on and I drive away.

There are wooded areas in this old community. It must have run through someone's
back yard and gotten lost...

Anyway--it was a sad--and interesting moment...G.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

LOL... low impact exercise in the pool is where I need to start... plenty of digging to do here! I do love my little border shovel from Lee Valley, helps me limit my lifting to what I can reasonably manage. and it's stainless steel, so when a break turns into stopping & I leave my shovel out in the garden. it's just fine!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Jill, I bought Holly one of the small spades, when I gave it to her she turned up her nose and said something to the effect, "that's not a shovel". I swear I also heard a "Rr,Rr,Rr" following that. LOL
Anyway a few months later she told me it was the perfect tool for many jobs.

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Jeeeez Ric, glad Jamie is ok, but sorry to hear about the car! Man, those things do seem to appear outta nowhere, huh?

Heh heh, I've got one of those little "baby" shovels... Holly is right, it is the PERFECT tool for many jobs, I love mine! =)

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Thinking the water exercises are a good thing, Jill. Hopefully, dear Holly can get in some buoyancy time whilst in the Bahamas. Can you say SCUBA?????!!!!!

Was able to get outside the last two days and get some beds cleaned out and cut back. I swear the bulbous thingys are growing in front of my eyes. Glad i was able to get this done now before they are too big for me to work around. Did I just say that? Heehee

I am exhausted after this week of being with the Texas grandies. The 5 month old is a delight, but dare I say the almost three year old is a terror?!!! When she was with me by herself it was better. There were some bright moments which enjoyed immensely.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Glad Jamie wasn't hurt! Those critters really do have a way of doing some damage.

Need to go check out that little shovel.

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Oh yes, the water exercising is wonderful, I hope you're enjoying it Jill. (Much better than digging, for sure!)

Man, I really do need to get outside and do something.. anything!! Maybe I'll just get in 1-2 hours of homework early tomorrow morning, and then go outside and play for a few hours in the afternoon? =)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Jan, see the stainless-steel "border shovel" at Lee Valley: http://www.leevalley.com/en/garden/page.aspx?p=45712&cat=2,64944,45712

Also, shovels intended for kids tend to be less than sturdy toys. Although you can get short-handled small shovels at Home Depot that are pretty rugged, as Joyanna got taller she really wanted one with a longer handle. I got one from Lee Valley last year that she loves. I couldn't find it on their site as such, but I think this "floral shovel" is its equivalent. http://www.leevalley.com/en/garden/page.aspx?p=45633&cat=2,44813,45713,45633&pb=1#pb

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Wow, so glad Jamie is OK.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

That floral shovel looks about like Holly's.

Yes, Jamie wasn't complaining yet today about any delayed effects.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Yes, Mine is like the floral shovel, I practically turned my nose up at that shovel when Ric brought it home. But have since found that it is the perfect shovel for working around in the beds and use it all the time now. One of my favorite tools.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh I love Lee Valley!

DH just broke my short spade, so I was thinking about getting this perennial spade: http://www.leevalley.com/en/garden/page.aspx?p=51124&cat=2,64944&ap=1

Or the transplant spade: http://www.leevalley.com/en/garden/page.aspx?p=56798&cat=2,64944&ap=1

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

ssg, If you get one of the ergonomic tools I would be interested in hearing how you like it. Not too sure about that round handle but you never know till you try one.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Holly, I was also wondering how a round handle would be considered ergonomic. I'll report back if I end up getting that one!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

It looks like that erg. shovel has an enlarged shoulder also. My new spade has that and it's great. I can dig in flip-flops and not bruise my instep. No need for clunky boots for digging in beds.
Oh I forgot, My new shovel is a Kobalt, sold at Lowe's.

I have the round handle shovel labeled "E" on ssg's second url. I love it and it is probably the tool I use the most. The stainless steel handle is great, especially if you have a tendency to leave things out in the weather. I haven't noticed the "ergonomic" round handle being any better or worse than other handles.

I always start thinking about terrariums in Feb. Not much growing going on and the Flower Shows always have some nice displays so last month I found a large jar that I thought would make a nice one and Ric picked up several plants for me from Dutch Plant Farm when he was down for the seed swap. I got a little side tracked but finally did put one together and have plans for 2 more.
I wanted a closed jar but the one I liked didn't have a lid but I was sure I could find something that would work. I have this old leaded piece that was the first thing I made in stainglass classes years ago. It is a pretty good fit and I like the way it looks.

Looks great! Like it was made for that. Cute plant selection too.

Two small ferns a dark leafed pepperonia and some moss from the yard.

Hey Sally, I remember how much you liked Josh's house and I thought you might like to see what he did to his kitchen. I hated the old cabinets not the really old build ins but the newer cabinets, they were just this uninteresting brown. I would have ripped them all out and replaced them. Not Josh, he sanded them. Leaving the old finish in the insets, who knew all that beautiful wood was under that dark finish. He covered the outside wall of the center unit with tongue and groove. That boot box/bench he built last year. He is planing on doing something with the counter top and a new floor but they may be awhile in coming. Before and after pics.

Awwww..........Josh looks a lot like YOU, Ric.....A younger version.

The cabinets are beautiful! What a neat idea to leave the dark in the grooves!

Do you have a picture of yourself around Josh's age???
Please show us!

Thanks Holly, that is so creative and interesting! Well done!!! I love it!

It almost makes me want to go get a historic house and rehab it.

Almost.

;^)

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Sally, I'd say in your case maybe 10 years ago, and in ours' 30. Based on the way Holly and I have prioritized things maybe even 40. LOL

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

What a world of difference in those cabinets! Takes a creative mind to see beyond what is there to what it could be. Looks really nice. I'd love to see what he comes up with for the counters and floors when those projects eventually get underway.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

We have been talking about the floor and I think he is going to put down new linoleum. There are 2 doors that enter the kitchen from the outside. There is such little floor clearance that there is no space to put down the layers that would be required for ceramic tile or some type of stone/or brick floor. He could shorten the doors a bit but you can't raise them. But you never know what he may come up with.

Gita, Josh isn't Ric's biological father. Any resemblance is just consequential. Only Jamie is Ric's biological child. When we got together he got a ready made family Mom and 3 young children.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

That wood is really gorgeous. Tremendous difference between those before/after pics!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Holly, my BIL Richard just redid a powder room and used something that looked like wood flooring that I think was thin. I liked it - a lot of times those wood look products are kind of cheesy. I can't remember what he said it was, but I'll ask him. Might be an option Josh could look at.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Josh has laid a few of those. The one he put in for Jen is pretty nice. The one we put in the Grands room was pretty cheap and looks nice enough but it isn't something that you would want to put in a more trafficked area.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

OMG, such sad news. Darius passed away yesterday.
