thanks Ric.
I ran out in barefeet to get silly Addy out of the van where she had been waiting for somebody to take her for a ride. 30 seconds on 10 degree F concrete= ccc old!

I hope Holly is waking up feeling a little better at least. (Really hoping for a lot better of course)

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Still bed ridden I am sorry to say. Have a Dr Appt this afternoon, The better pain meds do help but not enough for me to get up and move around for more than a few minutes.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Take some zinc along with pain meds.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I think we have some Zinc, what does it do?

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

I take supplemental zinc whenever I am ailing but not daily all year.

Zinc

Scientists at the University of Adelaide, AU have discovered how Zinc interplays with one of the deadliest bacteria, Streptococcus pneumoniae, which kills more than one million people a year by causing pneumonia, meningitis and other serious infectious diseases.

Zinc starves the bacteria that need to feed off manganese, an essential metal, in order to thrive and attack the body. By blocking this process, Zinc weakens the bacteria and makes the job of the immune system so much easier.

The essential mineral Zinc, is one of the very best anti-bacterial agents.

Food Sources:
Seafood
Beef and Lamb
Pork & Chicken
Wheat Germ
Spinach and Silverbeet (Chard)
Pumpkin and Squash Seeds
Nuts
Cocoa and Chocolate (Cocoa Powder)
Dry Beans or Legumes
Mushrooms

Zinc - An Essential Mineral

Zinc is an essential mineral present in nearly every cell of your body. Zinc stimulates the work of about 100 enzymes that keep your body functioning normally. In addition, your body needs zinc to use nutrients for immunity, for wound healing and for maintaining your senses of taste and smell. Food is the best source of zinc, as supplements have not proven (to date) to be a sufficient source. It is very difficult to get too much zinc in your diet; however, supplements may cause harmful side effects: Lowering of HDL (good) cholesterol levels, weakening of immune response and impairment of copper absorption. Zinc is found in many different foods from both animal and plant sources so you can usually get all you need from a variety of foods.

Foods of animal origin are the best sources: Lean meat, poultry, and some seafood, liver and, in small amounts, milk and eggs. In fact, the body absorbs zinc better from a diet rich in animal protein than from one high in plant protein. You also get zinc from whole-grain foods, nuts, fortified breakfast cereals and some legumes, but phytates in those foods can decrease its rate of absorption.

If you are deficient in zinc, symptoms include reduced immunity, appetite loss, skin changes and impaired growth - and, during pregnancy, birth defects. The causes are poor intake, poor absorption, zinc loss or increased need. Vegetarians may need more since zinc from plant sources is not absorbed as well as zinc from other sources. Fortified cereal may be the best source.

There are some health-conditions linked to poor zinc status: Digestive diseases, alcoholism, inadequate calorie intake and poor infant and childhood growth. The USDA found that high fat, low-carbohydrate diets do not provide an adequate supply of zinc. If you suspect a deficiency, talk to your doctor about your symptoms before trying a supplement. Should you and your doctor decide you need a supplement, read the label's Supplement Facts to help keep your daily zinc intake under the UL.

Ric, I enjoy the giraffe pictures, love those critters. I have to get this painting mounted and framed, my daugther Anna got it in South Africa for me along with a beaded giraffe.

Cat--that picture looks very interesting....BUT--it does not enlarge any bigger
than the thumbnail.
Can you fix that and re-post it? I would love to see it in its entirety.

Thanks. G.

Hoping for dramatic improvement for our Holly!

While I appreciate snow more in Feb. than in March, I still have to say it's beautiful out there, especially with the blue skies we had today. Nice to be able to look *out* the window from our warm homes.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I actually did enjoy the few minutes of the cold clean air, and crunchy snow under foot, taking Addy outside when I got home from work. I would miss that if I lived with no snow ever.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Not good Critter, Dr says I have the same problem that Ric had and will eventually require the same type of surgery. With the pain meds and muscle relaxers I am taking I can sit up a bit more not entirely flat on my back and I can walk around a bit. This morning I was able to walk from the bedroom to the living room and sit in a lounge chair I couldn't do that yesterday. They are sending me for an injection that may help. This sucks big time!!!!!

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Oh Holly, I am really sorry that you're having such a rough time. I hope that something will work for your very soon.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Oh no Holly. That sounds awful :( Hope that pain eases up and you get some kind of mobility back real soon.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks everyone, Well I can sit here pretty comfortably and work on my X-stitch. Watch a bit of TV and enjoy the birds coming to the feeders.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I guess I'm glad you & Ric took turns with this -- but yeh, it sucks. I'm so sorry you're hurting like this.

Birds at the feeders here, too! We watched 'Cinderella' this morning and are now enjoying a short bonus feature about 12 young women from around the world who were presented with "glass slippers" in 2012... didn't know about it at the time; apparently it was a Disney studio thing to go with the "Diamond edition" of "Cinderella"

Just noticed that today is Gita's birthday. I started a thread to wish her birthday greetings:

Holly, I'm sorry to hear that you'll need an operation at some point. :( I hope they get the right mix of meds for you soon.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Take it one day at a time--Holly....Now Ric can dance circles around you
and wait on you hand and foot...

Wishing you a good recovery...NOT a speedy one--these things take time...

Hugs! Gita

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Oh gosh Holly, I'm so sorry to hear that it's worse than we thought! Saying lots of prayers for you, that does indeed sucketh! Thankfully you have a wonderful Hubby to help take care of you! I, too, am wishing you a gentle and full recovery, whatever it takes.

XOXOXOXOXOX

P.S. Darius, I think maybe you mis-understood Holly's dilemma - it's not a virus or bacteria, it's her back. Can zinc help that too? (please say yes!) =)

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Zinc helps the body heal.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

You are right Speedie, I do have a great caregiver.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Dangnabbit Holly. We sure hope things ease up.

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

I need to pay more attention to zinc then, I'm basically and generally falling apart inch by inch. Never did pay too much attention to my zinc intake... learn something new every day! :)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Speedie--

You can buy Zinc lozenges--suck them till gone--NO chewing!
A box of 18 cost me $6.98 at Walgreens..
Might be less somewhere else....Wallgreens is a bit pricey...

I believe you take these to avoid a cold--not so much once you have it.
Similar to Airborn.

Howdy all from the frozen tundra they call the south!

I have been MIA and I know it! My apologies, but logged in to say Hi and Bye - heading to Norway tomorrow morning, a short layover at Dulles and I fly overnight to Munich, then Oslo!! Been so looking forward to this trip, it's been 2 years since the last one and hubby surprised me, he knew I needed to go home after everything! My last 2 scans have been perfect & clear, no signs of anything, had a check up today with onc/gyn and he's very pleased with my progress! Whoda thunk in Sept 2012 I'd be cleared and on my way home now! I'll be seeing the family, friends and eating fish every day I am there! Hubby is in charge of Sascha and the kitties, I sent Bandit to our housekeeper on vacation!! :)
My recovery has been slow, but steady - I'd venture to say I am at about 75% speed now - it's been awesome getting some energy back, not "ready to work in garden" energy - but, puttering in the house and I've been baking up a storm, much to the joy of hubby's coworkers! As soon as I get home I'll start in the garden, the backyard is on hold for a year with trees, until I know for sure that Sascha won't rip them up by the roots...so I'll concentrate on the front and get it nice and filled up! Not sure what died over winter, due to the insane weather we've had here, I had no idea we would get snow/deep-freeze south of the mason-dixon! Temps in the low teens at one point, so I'm sure I'll find more than a few that didn't survive - since my energy level is up, I have no excuses :) I'll send y'all a Hello! from Norway ...be good! Hugs to all!

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Wow, that's great news Becky! You probably won't see this for a while, but I hope you have a WONDERFUL trip! So glad you're getting back up to speed again, and whole and well enough to take this trip to see your family. Have fun!! =)

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Becky, so great to hear from you and with such good news too! Have a great trip.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Becky thanks for checking in. CONGRATULATIONS on all the good news! Yeah this was a bad winter to have new stuff in any garden there or here. But none of us mind needing to plant more things, right? Eat waffles for us!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Safe trip. Becky! Glad you are up to par. It has been a haul for you.
No place like home--that's for sure...
I would go "thataway" just for the amazing dairy foods and fresh fish too..
OH, and those Anchovies.....

Best to you always--Gita

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Bec so good to hear from you. Have a great trip and post some pictures for us.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

WONDERFUL news, Bec!!!! Enjoy your homeland. I've been thinking about you.

This definitely has been a crazy year.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Becky, I was just thinking about you at the seed swap!

This is really fantastic news. I hope you have lots of fun in Norway!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Eewwwww... I was sitting here at the computer checking out the latest DG posts, reached back to push my hair out of my face, and felt something there - it was a dang blasted stink bug. I think the news is that the prolonged single digit temps this winter has done a number on wiping them out, but I still have 20+ in the house every day. These critters ARE NOT on any list of things I want to save from endangerment!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Hehehe. Found one in the bathroom recently and immediately thought of Ruby and the hordes she had and was thankful I found only one.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

My mother came home from the rehab center yesterday. She still is not allowed to put any weight on the ankle for another 6 - 8 weeks, but she was able to do the things on the check-off list that would allow her to come home. Mike and Lowell build a wheel chair ramp so that my dad can get her between the car and the house, and we've gotten the few medical items that she needs (a slide board, toilet/shower seat, and an extension wand to replace the fixed shower head). I went up there this morning and all is going ok. I helped my dad put the bed frame back together - we initially thought to put the box spring and mattress directly on the floor so that it would be the same height as the wheel chair, but that didn't work very well. All in all, I think she is really happy to be home.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I am sure she is very happy to be home in familiar surroundings. As long as she doesn't overdo it.

Taking a little break.
Getting ready for a visit from the Texas grandies. Land sakes the baby is 5 months old already!! My hands are itching to get a hold of her. Planning on taking the 2yr old to the aquarium next week. They landed in BWI around midnight and are visiting his brother in Annapolis as I type. Will make their way up here after supper. DIL flies out of Newark to Europe tomorrow on business returning on Thursday. Won't get to see muchof her, sadly. So, if I don't check in much you will know why.

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Oh Terri, that is GREAT news about your Mom coming home! I'm SURE she's glad to be back home again, even if it is (temporarily) with some modifications.

Gosh, was today's weather GORGEOUS or what!?!? < =D

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Glad to hear your mother's home now! Nothing like coming back home after something like that. After I broke my ankle, I wheeled around the house in an office chair for a week or so.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

And I gotta say, I didn't know how bad my seasonal affective disorder was until I got outside in the sunshine today. Boy, that sunlight sure makes a difference.
