Onion Seedlings

Columbia, MD(Zone 7a)

I am an absolute beginner when it comes to growing anything. I started onion seeds indoors and they seem to be doing fine, but I'm not sure if I am supposed to intervene, or leave them be. You know how they grow in loops? I read in one blog that you can cut the "loops," and pull out the shorter end, to assist the onions, but I wasn't sure if this is what you are supposed to do. Some of them have pulled the one part out themselves, and a couple of them still have the seed attached on the end that has pulled out. Is this normal? Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Everything is growing normal. Now all you need to do is fertilize a little & add light. Lots of light, . I usually plant mine outside, because onions don't mind the cool weather.

I do sometimes cut the loops and sometimes don't, supposedly it makes a better plant if you do cut the loops. Here is a good tutorial on growing onions form seed.

Thank you, both comments were very helpful! I've been searching the internet, trying to figure out what kind of fertilizer I should use. Do you have any recommendations?

I think any balanced fertilizer would do, 10-10-10 maybe 10-20-10, something in that range.

I am using Miracle-grow. The kind which is attached to a water hose, & it mixes it for you. I spray the onions once a week.

I just use my compost.

I am hoping compost will be enough being that is all I am using this year.
