FIRST FLOWERS OF SPRING Post Your Pics!!

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

So to ask a silly noobie question, are Holly and Ric married?

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Yes, or so they tell us LOL! Get Holly to tell you the story one of these days - they were really low key, relaxed about the ceremony and date....

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Interesting :)

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Aspenhill, ROFLOL
Yes we are married and have been for close to 32 years now. Of course that doesn't mean that I need to keep him if I change my mind. LOL

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Yeah Jeff, You might say I had an instant family. By the time an ordained family friend married us in my uncles livingroom, the 3 children were 4, and I said my vows holding the newest addition. Holly did what was necessary to make it legal. LOL

Old hippies just get hippier.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Haha, you guys sound like a riot!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Looking forward to meeting you in person Jeff.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Ditto.

Holly and Ric are awesome-and-a-half, BE PREPARED!!! < =D (and, if ya got anything "Grateful Dead" - wear it!) < =P

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Haha...I'm a little young for Grateful Dead, no offense ;P

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Daffodils with buds today!!

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

I was checking out the perennials that the guys brought into the greenhouse yesterday at work and I saw a lovely Hellebore with 2 buds on it!! Wish I'd had my iPod with me to take a pic!! =( One of the buds was near ready to open, too!

silver spring, MD(Zone 7a)

OK Speedie

I'm ho me sick today. What greenhouse did you say you work at?

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

We used to be "Longwood Nursery, MD", and are now "Wintergreen Landscape Maintenance" (with "Nursery" soon to be incorporated into the name somehow.) We are in Waldorf, MD, on the Northwest corner of the intersection of Rt. 5 and Billingsley. (it's on the South-bound side). I would LOVE to have you come visit me Yehudith!! =) The only days for sure you won't find me there are Friday (I have school) and Sunday (we are not open for business on Sundays, that is God's day). =) If ever you plan to be down this way, shoot me a D-mail to give me a heads-up; I'll be sure to be there WITH BELLS ON! < =D

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Speedie--

Sundays are a huge shopping day in garden centers.
Everyone is home and an outing is always welcome.
Hubbys are available for DIY jobs too.

Has this Nursery been closed on Sundays all the time?
G.

silver spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Still home sick. Gotta get better I'm spending a fortune on plants online. I ordered atleast a dozen hellebores from Bluestone (I love their stuff) and a couple more flats from Graceful Gardens and some stuff from Amazon and the list goes on. I've gotta stop!! I can always blame it on my high fever.

OO yes Speedie. I have a friend who wants to redo her yard. Actually its do her yard. Let me get my legs back under me and we'll be on our way.

Yehudith

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

I sure hope you get to feeling better Yehudith, really soon!!! When I first read what you said on the previous post, I thought you meant "homesick" and accidentally put a space in there... sorry about that! < =/ There's been loads of icky crud going around, everyone seems to be catching it! Get plenty of rest and don't forget your fluids!!

Gita, no Ma'am, when it was Longwood we were opened on Sundays, however this is something that the new owner has prayed about extensively; while he's fully aware of Sundays being a busy shopping day, he believes this is the path he's been led to follow, to honor God. The Lord will handle it, like He always does; ya just can't go wrong when ya put Him first. =)

silver spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I know, it seems like everyone in our care center is down with something. We just got word that my boss is in the hospital with malaria of all things! Sure puts what ever I have into perspective. My big worry was all the patients I need to see. I just got off the phone with our triage nurse and she's calling in the on call people (those still on their feet) to get coverage.

Thanks for your kind thoughts

Yehudith

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Yehudith I hope you are back to 100 % real soon. Malaria, gee whiz that's unusual

While you are recouperating and ordering plants be sure to come over to our Group Buy Ferns thread and confirm your interest in the assortment from North Creek Thanks.

Back from the seed swap. Coleup, Speedie, and Yehudith--we missed you guys! Terp, too! :-)

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

I missed you guys too, BIG TIME!!!!!!!!! I'm glad to read on the other thread that y'all had such a wonderful time!!! ♥

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

HaHaHa, I guess I missed you all a lot, too...all of my dreams last night were filled with 'people I haven't seen in a long time' You all looked festive and spiffy and there was no snow on the ground! The grounds were a combo of Savanna chic and Downton Abbey!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Judy---

You just have to keep from cancelling out of the swaps--and all the above
will become a reality!......:o)

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I love crocus in the snow!

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Sweet! Our purple ones are still being a bit shy. We only have yellows and whites so far. The purples come out the latest. Most of our bulbs are still covered with snow! Grrr...winter, please end soon!!!

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

Lovely! Crocus flowers are so cheerful this time of year :o). Spring is coming!!!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

thanks, ssg, still waiting on any crocus here, at least ten days late.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

They are so lovely, SSG! Nothing here... :-(

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I went outside looking for any signs of a bloom --somewhere...
I have ONE little snowdrop--it comes up in the same place--every year..
It never multiplies but it exists. I think the bulb must be under the landscape edging...

Also--these Daffodils (???mot sure?) are up a ways with buds. Are they daffs???
There are others almost up as far. These are in the long, sunny side bed.

I am SOOO anxious to see everything come up in there...The iris I divided--the Alliums
I planted--also another Monarda...and, tucked at one end--in a protected spot--
the 2 VA clustered Bluebells... Who knows what else will come up?
It WILL be different and exciting to see...

Other than that--all I got was muddy feet...walking through wet snow in my Crocs..

#3--my "other" Clivia--the one with the rounded leaf-tips--has blooms that are
so intensely orange! This is the one that bloomed outside last summer...

My Amaryllis are also starting to bloom. There will be lots of them...

That's crazy you have daff buds already. They don't put out much foliage before they bud. What kind are they?

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

I just love your little dancing lady with your Clivia Gita!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jeff--

This bed got pretty much all dug up last fall--and lots of things were re-planted...
It is possible that--either--this daff was, unintentionally, moved up with all the
digging, OR--I was sticking bulbs back in...here and there...and not too deeply.

This bed will be all different from last year--can't wait...
It is the only bed I don't have to fight maple roots. it also gets full sun.

Here--this will give you an overview where this bed is. This pic is from 2011.
All my beds look like this--straight along the building.. Boring....
Gita

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Yes but they may look boring on the outside but it looks like there is a party going on inside, which is the important part!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

You are correct there! Lets party!

I did remove most of the daffs from this bed--or tried--as i cannot deal
with all the yellowing leaves laying all over . As you can see--this bed
(and all others) are small and there just is no room when I have to plant some annuals and
have all these leaves in the way.. By then--all kinds of other plants are up here already.
Phlox and Roses and Iris, and Oriental Lilies---it IS amazing!
I am sure there will be plenty of daffs that I missed--even some I planted back in.

I have lived here 44 years--and sometimes--a few things need to change...
Change id good--in baby steps.....but it is hard work ;o/

Gita

Here's a small section of this same bed last July...it DOES fill up!

Thumbnail by Gitagal
Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

That's what I like to see; a nice full bed! I like to leave the neat and orderly to the 'professionals' that do the shopping centers and such :) Plus full beds have the added benefit of weed prevention!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jeff--here is another FULL bed for you--on the opposite side of my house...2010.

My East-side bed...just 10' long...or so....from last year in June--
it had a long way to go yet to really fill uo. Could not find the right picture...
My beds DO tend to become a pile of colors--all mixed up.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Gorgeous!!! It does take a few years to fill a bed to capacity, that's for sure. All our beds should be plenty full after this season with all the plants I'm getting.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

This Guy (a Dr. Seuss brugmansia) fills this bed all by himself....

It got too big for mer to take in to winter over...so--I cut it back--and took
cuttings and big plant itself to Cylburn Arboretum here in Baltimore...

This was the second huge brug I gave away--along with 2 huge, heavy baskets
of Ric-Rac Cactus as well as two huge Epis.

So--this year--I start all over from cuttings...NOT the first time.
These Brugs and Epis grow so fast and so big--in 3-4 years--there's another
monster....
Over the 12 years or so on Dg--and 2 yrs before that on Garden Web--
I have accumulated odd plants...None common in this area.....

Here is the Dr. Seuss--last September... Awesomely beautiful!
Under it are red wax Begonias.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Wow, definitely pretty for sure. It's nice that you gave it to the Arboretum, I'm sure they appreciate it :)
I don't get in to exotics much, just regular stuff that can handle itself in one of our winters. We just don't have the room or ability to do that as we have a small garage with no windows and I'm not about to install grow lights. I did plant a cactus last year but that's about the extent of it.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Anyone seeing their reticulated iris come up? I've been checking on them every couple of days, but they're growing awfully slowly.

Gita I can't believe your daffs are about to bloom!
