The link is for 17 pounds so don't be afraid! They sell it in 3 pound bags.

For anyone worried about the nitrogen, I can only tell you I've used volumes of it in this area for many years with no problems to the plants at all.

Some of my crocus are coming up and I have the tops of tulips showing as well.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Oh my gosh Pirl....that garden is gorgeous. It looks like it belongs to an Arboretum.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

You're right Pirl's garden truly is beautiful.

After all the discussion we had about "Milorganite'---doesn't anyone want to
try that around all the vulnerable plants? If it keeps deer away--maybe rabbits too.
Rabbits stripping all the oriental lilies--and eating fresh, new growths--is why I use
the green plastic fencing around beds and plants. Hate the look--but I like to have a garden...

The other day--when i was cleaning up a bit--I found an almost empty bag of Milorganite
and sprinkled it around every bed I had. Nice, gentle fertilizer too....will see how it works..

I bought 2 more bags of it--will use it on my lawn---it is time to do that!
Then--enjoy the glorious greenness of my grass.....TRY IT--FOLKS!!!

No bunnies here yet---Last year--all we had was a very fertile Mama--
she had FIVE litters during the summer. They were running around everywhere...
Maybe between the one snake I saw--and the hawks--they all went to their maker...
Maybe the frost got them too....i DO NOT want to see any....

Food for thought....

"Reproductive maturity occurs at about 2 to 3 months of age. A majority of females first breed the spring following birth; but 10% to 36% of females breed as juveniles (i.e., summer of the year they were born).[21] Males will mate with more than one female. Female rabbits can have 1 to 7 litters of 1 to 12 young, called kits, in a year; however, the average number of litters per year is 3–4 and the average number of kits is 5.[13] In the South female eastern cottontails have more litters per year (up to 7) but fewer young per litter.[11][19] In New England female eastern cottontails have three or four litters per year. The annual productivity of females may be as high as 35 young."

That's from Wikipedia...

Gita,

I use Milorganite and I don't think it has the same affect as it does the deer, at least in my area. We always have to consider that not all populations are the same. My rabbits might not be bothered by the Milorganite because I use it often or maybe they are so hungry that they don't care about it.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks for the compliments. It was one of the first gardens we made here.

Gita - last year I used a whole bag of Milorganite across the two areas where the deer enter and it never stopped them. We've always used it in the old vegetable garden and always had good results.

One of the sweetest sights I've ever seen in the garden was a mother rabbit nursing her little one.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

aww nursing babies....

I counted 125 flowers or buds on my patch of crocus tomm. from a bag of 25 bulbs about seven ? years ago

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

It's good that children don't multiply like that!

You did good!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally, how exciting! This year I definitely noticed that the crocus have been multiplying for me as well. :) I'd rather have multiplying crocus than multiplying rabbits...

I'm seeing bulbs coming up everywhere, but only green shoots and no blooms except for the crocus. The hellebores are *soooo* close, but we're getting a couple of chilly days ahead. I can't waiiiiiiiiiiiittttt.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

my Dutch crocus are in a less hospitable place, poorly drained, and decreasing there. Location, location...

Odenton, MD(Zone 7b)

I finally have a few crocus blooming! Daffs and tulips are coming up too.

Hurray!

I'll have to post a pic of our Witchazel....looking pretty snazzy of late.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Pretty!

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

They're lovely Robin, such a rich colour!!

Yes please Jeff, would love to see your snazzy Witch hazel. :)

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

I'll take a pic this weekend and put it up. It's gorgeous though!

Wow, that one is awesome!!! I hope ours eventually looks like that :)

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Oh my gosh Sally, that one is incredible!!!!!!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

First pic is my first early crocus not sunny enough for them to be open yet.
Not blooming yet but the second pic shows all the tulips to be coming up, sedum and crocus. You can see why I am trying to get this bed cleaned up first.

I bought Milorganite yesterday for the rabbits. I'll apply some tomorrow, hopefully it works. Not much is worse than watching a tulip bud grow and then when it's just about to bloom, seeing it laying on the ground.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Witch Hazels are supposed to have a really nice scent, but I've stopped to smell every one I've ever seen in bloom, and nothing. Maybe my sniffer is defective, I dunno. Jeff, does your have a scent?

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

I'm with you Aspen. I've never been able to smell witch hazel. I've had mine for two blooming seasons now.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Ric took this pic of the Winter Jasmine just starting to open up.

nice Holly!

It all looks lovely Holly

Jeff---
If Milorganite does not work--i KNOW rabbits will not cross a line of dried blood.
Of course--if it rains--the blood just dissolves in a nice "N" fertilizer.
It also is a bit $$$.
You could also--ahem...--relieve yourself around the beds...that will say--
"This territory is marked as MINE!" Doing this also, seriously, deters deer.

Paul--

Have you checked your WS (Wintersweet Shrub) lately? It should be full of blooms...
Thought you would be, excitedly, reporting on this bush to all of us all by now....
May just be YOUR first blooms of the season.

Sally--did your WS gift you with a few more blooms than the one last year?
Have you been "back there" to check?

Nothing new blooming here--just the lavender Crocuses i showed you earlier
are all spreading wider.

Been working on seeding most of the day. Will continue tomorrow....

my wintersweet buds could nt endure these blasts of cold, they finally dried up and fell off last week.
:^(
But the crocus tommies were even more open today, surprisingly they did not get shredded yesterday with that cold wind.

Oh Sally, I do so LOVE your crocuses, soooo pretty!!!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally--those little Crocus look adorable! Like you sprinkled them around...

I think I have lost a lot of buds off of my camellia as well. There are some left...
Too bad--but it will give the shrub a break.

Waiting for a nice day when i am not pressed to do anything else, and then
I have to get out the hedge trimmer and trim the BIG hemlock by my door--
and the two Junipers in front of the house. Mamma Mia--they look huge!
Leaning about 4' over the lawn.
Skip one year of pruning them back--and this is what I get,,,

That will be a big job!!! They are prickly too. Will try the hedge clipper--
bu if it cannot hack it--I'll have to prune it by hand....OOOPS! Can't do that just now!
Bummer! It will kill my hand. I have always pruned it one wispy stem at a time
with my pruning sheers. NO GO this year. Shoot!!!!!

May have to bribe my back-yard neighbor to come with his chain saw....
but then my Junipers may end up looking like the hacked bushes at Speedie's
Nursery. Can't cut too deep to bare stems. They will never green up again.

We will see--We will see......G.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

yes, I love the way they are sprinkled around the base of the tree like a woodland faerie spot!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Cat--BRAINSTORM!!!!

Sally--make a fairy garden around that tree....FlowAjen has one--right?
Greenthumb has one! I will contribute a real nice, rustic front to a possible
Faerie house. Door works and all.....Made of rough wood wood...looks adorable.
It has been sitting around on my craft shelves forever....

Here---If you do it--this will be your first piece to work from.
Addy is NOT allowed to visit there...You could make it higher up on the tree trunk
where she cannot reach! Like a---5th floor Condo....

What do you say? It will give the rest of us to gift you things to make this "house" a "home'...

It's absolutely charming!
Would it be OK out in the weather?
Maybe I can attach it up a bit off the ground, maybe look like the fairies are going INTO the tree.
Maybe you should have it on YOUR tree.

Not as much charming planted here in summer, being base of a maple tree. There are patches of blue eyed grass and some sedum ..I could encourage the sedum and tidy up a bit. What else? would fairies or tiny trolls have around their house? If its up on the tree, I should make a little ladder for them to climb.

Addy won't bother it unless there is meat in it.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

A little ladder---How cute!!!

see? Got you thinking already!
You know I make Gnomes out of Pom-Poms. They are about 3'+ tall--
but pom-poms would not work outside.....
BUT--I could also give you one of these........dollar store stuff several years ago.

Thumbnail by Gitagal Thumbnail by Gitagal Thumbnail by Gitagal
Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I never liked them all that pale--so I colored them in once--looks a lot better.
Plus--in the last picture--you can see the one I make from Pom-poms, felt
and other necessary accessories...

Don't know how you would incorporate these in the House--but you will think of something....
Not giving away all of them--you choose one!

You know Gita, if I wanted my wife to think I was completely nuts (she already thinks I'm halfway there) I would totally save a few specimens for the yard!

I'm going to give the Milorganite a shot and if it doesn't work, I'll know by the time the tulips come around and buy the blood meal.

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Oh WOW Gita, those gnome signs are incredibly adorable!!! I love the idea of the tree-front door for Sally above those Crocuses, and maybe a little rope ladder leading up to it? Perhaps a tiny little table-and-chairs out there, maybe a little bench... and/or a couple ceramic toadstools (colorful, of course!) OH, Sally, maybe you could create a little dry-river bed of stones running between a couple clumps of the Crocuses, then get a little mini bridge to place - like "From one clump to the next"..?? .... maybe a little baby bird-bath! < =D

THIS IS FUN!!!

Jeff, HAHAHAAHAAA!!!!!!! You could always go to step outside, and when your wife asks you where you're going, just say you're going out to water the lilies! =) heeheeheee

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Lol that would be great if we lived in the country! I'd have to do it at night though so the neighbors didn't see haha
