"Think Spring!" seed swap now on Saturday March 1

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I've had words with that old groundhog, and I'm sure the weather will behave this time!

If your name isn't already on the list of partiers, please POST ON THIS THREAD to let me know you're planning to attend and also LMK if you'll have an item for the gift table. Thanks!

Date: Saturday, March 1, 2014

TIME: 4 to 8 pm,

WHAT: early dinner followed by seed swap party

WHERE: Frederick, MD, Chef Lin Buffet (scroll down for directions

WHO: DG subscribers and their guests (see list at bottom of post)

COST: $18 (increase due to dinner vs. lunch)

new/continued DISCUSSION thread: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1350922/
original DISCUSSION thread: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1347157/
HAVES & WANTS thread: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1347159/

BRING: Extra seeds, either commercial or self-harvested. If you're going to split seeds into smaller packs, try to do that ahead of time, because it gets crazy! Most people bring a small item for the "gift table," which is sort of an expanded door prize thing that we like to do. Most of all, bring your enthusiasm -- we're going to have a great time!

BEFOREHAND: enjoy a browsing/shopping trip to Dutch Plant Farms (mention the Dave's Garden discount to get 15% off hard goods and 20% off plants! excluding sale items).

If you've never been to a DG Mid-Atlantic event, don't worry... we are a fun and casual group. Everybody brings their extra seeds to swap & share (it's very useful to make up little labeled packets ahead of time), everybody visits and talks, and everybody goes home with a nice selection of seeds to try! I wrote an article that may give you an idea about how this event goes: http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/1479/. I think we're in our 7th year!

You may want to plan to come early so you can drop by Dutch Plant Farm, my favorite local nursery for winter visits. Joyanna's favorite bird, Pogo the Parrot, lives there. I wrote an article that has a lot of photos taken there, if you'd like an idea of what they are likely to have. http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/769/ I emailed Mike and arranged a "Dave's Garden Discount" for our group on that day, so please be sure to ask for it at the register. For regular-priced items, we'll get 15% off on hard goods and 20% off on plants!

Between 3:45 and 4, we'll meet for lunch at Chef Lin, a local Chinese buffet that's one of my favorite Frederick restaurants.

First, we'll gather in the back room to get name tags and put our "stuff" down. I'll have a tray with bags for putting in seeds or little goodies for everybody (your name will be on the bag, but please leave it where it is until after lunch). There will also be a "gift table" set up as well as some tables/chairs where you can leave your seeds for the swapping part of the afternoon. Look for Sally -- the tall blond with the dazzling smile -- and give her your dinner money ($18 cash).

As we did last year, we'll be eating *outside* the room, at the tables in the rear of the restaurant. This will let us all eat together but be a little less cramped than in the past. As always, people are encouraged to change seats after then make another trip to the buffet, so they get a chance to talk to different people during the meal.

Around 5:30 pm, we'll change gears with a game in the back room before starting in on door prizes and seed swapping. If you have something you'd like to donate to the "gift table," please Dmail me or post that you're bringing something (so I know around how many items we'll have). Purchased items for the table should be under $5. If you got a pair of too-small garden gloves for Christmas, or you have a pretty grapevine wreath you're just done with, or you have an extra rooting vase or other container -- those are all wonderful gift table items!

We can get away with a few plants on the gift table, but "serious" plant trading will have to take place in the parking lot, or at my house for anybody coming over beforehand.

We'll concentrate on seed swapping from 6 to 8 pm or so. Of course, seeds can be swapped outside of that time, and of course anybody who doesn't want to swap seeds can just keep chatting and visiting. I bet some of us will be at Dutch Plant Farm before dinner, too!

There will be a seed swapping DISCUSSION thread as well as a thread for HAVE/WANT lists (one post per person, edit as needed). It's not necessary to make any arrangements ahead of time, but it can be useful to see what people have and what everybody's looking for. If you have seeds sorted out ahead of time for people, you can "deliver" them into their goodie bags (like valentine mail boxes in grade school).

new/continuation DISCUSSION thread:
initial DISCUSSION: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1347157/
HAVES & WANTS: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1347159/

The cost for dinner will be $18, including the tip and your choice of water, hot tea, or soft drink. Snow crab is an available option for several dollars more, but let's make it easy on our waitstaff by skipping the snow crab, please. There's a lot of other seafood on the buffet -- sushi, steamed shrimp & mussels, clams/oysters on the half shell, fried fish/shrimp/scallops, and various hot dishes. Selection at dinner is usually an "upgrade" -- look for the crispy duck and the creamy coconut shrimp! The hibachi grill lets you create your own combination, cooked for you on the spot.

The buffet also has everything from soups and stir-fries to fried chicken and mozzarella sticks... there's salad, fruit, and an expanded array of desserts. Ice cream lovers are in luck -- they now have a toppings bar as well as 3 ice cream stations: Hershey's ice cream cups & bars, hand-scooped ice cream, and choc/vanilla soft serve. They also have a chocolate fountain (great selection of fruit & other dipping items) and even a cotton candy machine! Don't miss the hot little fried sugared doughnuts on the appetizer bar. The selection is remarkable, and even if you don't like Chinese food you'll find plenty of possibilities.

We will all be on one tab, so please bring $18 in cash to pay for your lunch. Pay Sally, the tall blond with the dazzling smile.

I know some folks might be on tight budgets, and we've all been there. If the cost of the meal might keep you from coming, please Dmail me, and we'll get you covered. I don't want anybody to miss out.

Swapping of plants (with potting soil or dirt) that we can't bring inside can be done in the parking lot, maybe around 3:30. Small bagged plants and cuttings are OK to bring inside the restaurant. I know it's not an ideal arrangement, but bear in mind this was meant to be a seed swap. :-)

Please post on this thread if you're interested in coming. It's useful for the restaurant (and for me!) to have an approximate head count.

If you can't come but still want to swap seeds, please post here or on the seed swapping thread to ask somebody to volunteer to be your "seed fairy." You can post have/want lists, send your seeds and return postage to your person, and they'll send your seeds to you after the swap.

I had a blast at our previous seed swaps, and I'm so excited about this year's gathering!

THINK SPRING!

:-)

EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT!

We put together a group buy from Bill atCaladium Bulbs 4 Less. The bulbs have been delivered, and a few extras are available at cost. See the thread or Dmail me for details.

Also, let me know on this thread if you're interested in polymer moisture crystals or Sharpie industrial markers. I ordered a bulk box of the crystals last year and can share some of them at cost. I can usually get the markers for $1 each or less by buying them by the box.

In addition, I can make up $1 packs of seed split off from my recent order with Hazzard's... I think there was interest in hybrid sweet peppers 'Gypsy' and 'Carmen', and Berlandiera lyrata (Chocolate Daisy).

I'll try to bring some of all of these to the swap, but asking me ahead of time will ensure you get what you want. :-)

* * DIRECTIONS * *

The restaurant is in Prospect Plaza, at 417 S. Jefferson St,near a nest of interchanges where 15, 340, 40, and 270 all come together. This makes it both easy to get to from different directions, and hard to describe, but these directions worked well last year, LOL. McDonalds is at the front of the Plaza, easy to spot. Chef Lin is toward the center of this strip mall.

Combine these directions with a look at the map! (I failed to get a link... type 417 S Jefferson Frederick, MD into google, but don't try to follow the really confusing step by step directions, just use it for a map)

From the north, coming down 15 South. Get off at the Jefferson Street exit, turning LEFT (going east). Cross over the highway, and Prospect Plaza will be immediately on your LEFT (turn LEFT at the light).

From the south, along 15-340 North (the two highways merge together just south of Frederick): Stay on 340. (Don't get off onto 15 North when it diverges.) 340 more or less becomes Jefferson Street. Keep left. You'll cross the bridge over the highway, and then turn LEFT at the light into Prospect Plaza.

From the south, along 270N (coming up from the DC beltway): Get off at the Jefferson Street exit and turn RIGHT at the end of the ramp (east onto Jefferson). Make an immediate LEFT at the next light to turn into Prospect Plaza.

From the east (Baltimore), you'll be on 70 West. Take exit 53b, 15 North. Take the first exit onto Jefferson Street. Turn RIGHT at the end of the ramp (east onto Jefferson). Make an immediate LEFT at the next light to turn into Prospect Plaza.

From the west: you'll be on 70 East. Take the exit for 15 North. You're now on 15-340. Stay on 340. (Don't get off onto 15 North when it diverges.) 340 more or less becomes Jefferson Street. Stay to the left. You'll cross the bridge over the highway, and then turn left at the light into Prospect Plaza.

From Dutch Plant Farm (151 Baughmans Lane) to Chef Lin: Turn LEFT onto 40 East. Take the first RIGHT onto 15 South. Take the first exit, Jefferson Street. Turn LEFT onto Jefferson Street, cross over the highway, and then turn LEFT at the light into Prospect Plaza.

Dutch Plant Farm is off "the Golden Mile," highway 40, W Patrick St. At the corner of 40 and Baughman's Lane, there's a shopping center with a JoAnn's. DPF is just behind the shopping center. Coming from 15 onto 40W, you'd turn RIGHT at the first light onto Baughmans Lane and then take the 2nd entrance on the LEFT into DPF. (The 1st left is the side entrance into the shopping plaza.)

thanks Jill!

Odenton, MD(Zone 7b)

March 1 works for me so if I can hitch a ride with Sally I will be there. Will also bring something for the gift table.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally and Robin---

You know i will be going with you as well,,,

I was wondering if either of you plans to stop at the Nursery BEFORE the Swap?
We can't go afterwards.......
If you are--I need to stock up on the big bags of Espoma's Tones. I am almost out
of all of them. At 15% off--it is worth for me to buy a few there...
I don't have anyplace close by here to get the big bags.

How about it, Sally? Please let me know... Thanks..G.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Yay Robin!! Of course.

Gita and Robin, I'd like to go to Dutch Plant Farms, kind of a tradition now.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

That's great, sally....

When this gets closer--let me know what time to be at your place.....G.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

thanks, Critter!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

ATTENTION anybody planning to go to Dutch Plant Farms: please Dmail me your email address, so I can forward you a coupon (for $5 off on $20 or more non-sale merchandise). Mike told me we can use this coupon along with the discount he's giving us! He also confirmed that we have the same discount this Saturday as previously arranged for non-sale items, 15% off hard goods and 20% off plants.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Ric and I are still planning on coming. Looking forward to seeing everyone.
How late is DPF open on Sat night? We usually go and buy our plants and then go back and pick them up after the Swap so we don't have to let them sit in a cold car.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

That's a good point... they are only open until 7 pm, and we'll still be in the midst of swapping seeds then. Hmmm. You can certainly drop them off in my hallway (4831 Marsden Ct), but that's an extra stop... actually, is there any chance you can swing by anyway and bring me a couple (3 if you have space) bales of pro-mix? 1 bale of pro-mix if you can get it and 2 of the other one you've found would be great.

Small plants can just go into a paper bag and come in with you.

zap me your email please so I don't have to hunt it up... I want to send you the coupon... I would print it out twice, too. :-)

HUGS

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Holly and Ric, I'm still interested in a bag of ProMix BRK! :)

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Wondering if I should bring the oncidium, in cardboard box and paper bag closed up, or if the car might get cold. A fully warmed car might keep wrapped plants over 50 degrees for a few hours. Actually, I have a styrofoam cooler i think it can hold it.
wonder what oddball plant I will bring home this year?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Can you believe I'm looking at Amaryllis bulbs for next fall/winter? ADR is having a pre-sale. Going to stop looking now though and play with seeds in between chopping stuff for stew. :-)

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Good idea Sally I could bring a cooler or maybe one of my insulated bags might be big enough.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Oh yeah insulated bags!

Jill, dear...YOU...I do believe you are looking at them!!!!! hahaha

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

Jill,
Unfortunately I will be unable to attend. My daughter is still recovering from a tonsillectomy last week and she has a really tough time getting to sleep right now since she refuses to take the medicine. :( Also, my car is in the shop and I don't feel comfortable driving the rental any further than I need to.

Sorry guys! I will see if Gita can be my seed fairy. Otherwise I will Dmail everyone I promised seeds to for their addresses.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Karen--
Sorry you won't make it....we will miss you.

I plan to go no matter what--I say that because yesterday I came down with
a cold...all stuffed up...feel yukky....Everyone stay away from me....NO hugs and kisses...

Karen--I will be happy to be your seed faerie...do you want me to swing by tomorrow
and pick up whatever you have or do you want to drop it off here?

I can give you my stuff too. Not much. I have 2--4" pots of Rose Campion that has been
outside vegging all winter. These should go "POOF" when the weather warms up,
Just plant them in the back of a bed--out of the way..full sun. These will bloom this year.

Anything others have for you--I will gladly bring back here as well.
It will be a reason to visit.... Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Sorry you've got the crud, Gita! Karen, extra hugs for your daughter...

Just realized that tomorrow is officially the FIRST DAY OF SPRING! What a way to celebrate it! (never mind those snow clouds on the horizon, LOL)

FYI the goodie bags this year are big enough for cuttings in sandwich baggies... so...

Who wants a couple cuttings of nicely variegated white/green pothos? (forgot the name, but I picked it up last year I think at DFP after the seed swap) Looks like I have enough for half a dozen bunches after cutting back the plant. I also have a little bunch of reverted green-leaf pothos (even tougher than the variegated). And I can get plenty of babies from my Alsobia 'Cygnet' upstairs -- root the little crowns just like a spider plant, with a baggie over them for extra humidity until they strike roots.

Fair warning -- if you don't express a preference, you can expect a surprise!

Speaking of goodies... I just came across a bundle of hollyhock seeds, several varieties/colors... I just don't think I'm going to get to them. Who wants them? And I'm going to bring the whole baggie of poppy seeds, because I just don't seem to have the right spot for them (some have old dates on them but should be fine bec. they've been stored in the fridge).

For those (like me) who have a bunch of orphan packets to share, I'll be putting out some box tops where we can put them so they can be looked through easily: veggies, annual flowers, perennial flowers. Put in any extra packets you don't want, take out any that appeal to you.

Theresa just called to let me know she & her BIL had other family stuff come up and can't make it, and I just got a note from Buttoneer that she & Bobbin aren't coming... so we might be a smaller group than usual this year. But large gathering or small, we always have a blast together!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh, NO!!!!

I have a bunch of seeds she requested---plus the 3 small AV's I owed her.
Bummer! Is it the weather again? I hate to see all these cancellations!

Jill--the green and white Pothos is called "Marble Queen". My favorite.
It is hardy and a good grower. I will take a bunch of cuttings of it..please...
Often, variegated Pothos reverts to some all green. This is because
variegation is, sort of, "man made" and the original green will take over.
The GREEN stems should be cut off at the base. You can grow them out, of course...

Karen just dropped off her seeds she had promised others I have them.

G.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Gita, thanks, but this one is actually a newer cultivar than 'Marble Queen', with crisper variegation and smaller leaves. I just can't remember its name. You'll like it!

Can somebody please be Buttoneer's "seed fairy" and mail her seeds to her after the swap? I'll put a bubble envelope in her goodie bag. Thanks!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

who sez March 1 if the first day of spring? What about Vernal Equinox?

Gita, get all cozy and good night sleep tonight, and feel better!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

some folks in my PT clinic were going on & on about it this afternoon... I wondered about the equinox, too, but they said tomorrow was the "meteorological' first day of spring. ?

ok, found a reference -- http://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/spring-has-sprung-hey-wait-a-s/46438

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

You're right Jill, tomorrow is the meteorological first day of spring and vernal equinox is the astronomical first day of spring!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

now, that is pretty cool! thanks for the link. Which one of us should make that into an article, now, and when?

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

anyone else going to Dutch Plant Farm before swap? Gita,, Robin (Catbird) and I were planning to.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally, I'll be there as soon as I'm done sorting and labeling the bulbs.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

and I'm hoping to be there at that time also, although I may go out there in the morning just to be sure of getting a shopping stop in before our festivities!

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Yes to poppies but no to cuttings!

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

I'm planning to go there ahead of time as well.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Sally, feel free to run with it! Does the 20th fall on a "DG writer day?"

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

What a great link. I never knew there were 3 "first days of spring". I had never heard of solar or meteorological spring, but I'm grateful for the longer days even if the temperature doesn't say spring.
I will try to channel positive thoughts and NOT remember that our last frost date is sometime in May.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

oh goodie, but Muddy how will we know each other? Well, Gita, Robin and I will arrive together, we'll be ''the people looking at plants '' LOL

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

I'll find you, no worries.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Everybody have their coupons printed out? I went today since it was the last day for Feb's coupon. Got an incredibly sweet-scented purple "Fairy Primrose" and a cute red clearance-priced Cordylines. They had some good sized coffee plants clearanced for $20 (a little browning on some older leaves but plenty of bright new growth). Their dry goods area is well stocked, lots of pretty containers too! I made them put a note on the cash register so there would be no problem with our "Dave's Garden discount." :-)

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Quote from Muddy1 :
Yes to poppies but no to cuttings!

Me, too! No to cuttings but yes to poppy and hollyhock seeds! :-) Thanks, Critter!!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I didn't know about the 3 different kinds of spring, either! Very interesting. It definitely doesn't feel like spring right now, but I'm hopeful... :-D

So sorry I can't make the preswap trip to Dutch Farms! Sounds like fun. Today I am chanting to myself, "Daughter to dance lesson at 2, daughter to friend's house for social studies project at 3:30, then off to Chef Lin for the seed swap!!" Look forward to seeing you guys! :-)
