Watch'ya got cookin' 2014-2

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Taco night here, or to be more accurate burrito night, we like wraps as opposed to hard shell. I'll saute some peppers (holey mole if I can find them), onion, and ground meat with taco seasoning. Heat up some refried beans, or add some black beans to the mix. Break out the grated cheese, sour cream, and salsa or taco sauce and away we go.

I used the black beans since I was out of refried. The ground meat, turkey 93% lean. It came out very yummy.
Does anyone know which detergent advertised it could remove that sticky yellow build up on cooking sheets? I know I can scour them clean, but don't like to rough them up.

I cooked all day---don't even want to talk about it.....Lots of work--
I HATE washing dishes!!!!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I dunno Ric, mine are gunky

Dirty dishes $uck.

Made a delisioucs skillet pasta dish with hot sausage, meatballs and sauce leftover from Monday, shells, couple big globs of cottage cheese, and mozzarella and parm on top. Too tired to fix my spelling of delicious. I vaccuumed, did laundry, shopped, cooked, googled...

Gita, what a coincidence, I have EXACTLY that same Garlic Lime Chicken recipe!! I mean, EXACTLY to the last grain of ingredients!! You're right, it is a super quick and easy meal to throw together, and it's wonderful on "Spanish" rice - saffron with peas in it. Totally YUMMY!!! (yeah, I know, I am a pea-hater, but in rice, it's just very different for some reason).

I would LOVE to try that bbq pork rib recipe again; your recipe for the sauce is wonderful,.. I just need the correct ribs and more cooking time. A day off would be the ideal time to do it. I WILL definitely try it again.. when **I** am the one to shop for the ribs. (and that's all I have to say about that) ;)

Ric, it might be Dawn you saw that advertisement about. They make a "Platinum Power" thingy that's supposed to be really good at those tough, sticky jobs. Personally, I love Bon Ami. I use that on my more 'delicate' washing 'cause it's not abrasive at all. On my cookie sheets, it gets that dried/sticky brown stuff off easily (well, pretty easily, just a little elbow grease) when used with the regular "sponge" side of a scrunge. (not the scratchy side). Since I got new cookie/baking sheets though, I don't bake anything on them without parchment paper anymore.

Taco night sounds good, I love those 'soft' tacos also, much better than the hard crunchy ones. Then again, with the braces I can't have the hard crunchy ones, so that gives me an excuse! :)

Tonight's dinner will be Chicken Pot Pie. =)

Speedie---

Didn't I give YOU the garlic Lime Chicken recipe???..or, you were pulling my leg...

I made so many BQ ribs that they filled a BIG cookie sheet with high edges.

Just get the long-cut ones with bone in. I was going to take a picture for you
but forgot...Yes! I baked them for a long time--foil over them for the last hour.

Lots of basting---yummmm. G.

I 'cooked' various fast food, after spending hours in the docs office with MIL. (just a cold). The fish sandwich from Hardees isn't too bad.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Sausage, homefries, and a salad or frozen veggie for supper tonight, I also have a pot roast thawing for tomorrow.
I got the bonus buy yesterday. 6-1# pkgs. of ground turkey @ $2.66, 3# chopped steak $6.00, and 2.5# of hamburger for $5.63. I just love it when they clear the meat counter.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Ric--
A deal is a deal--BUT--have you ever tried a Safeway and their meat clearance corner?
IF you have one, that is--and IF they do this...

That 1lb, of ground Turkey here would have been 67 cents.
Things like chicken and turkey products have to move--they are usually VERY cheap!

Most steaks--~ 1lb. ea ~ (Porterhouse--Rib steaks--Strip steaks) normally go
for under $4 each.
I once bought one of those LONG trays, stacked with wings, maybe 5lbs. for $2.66.

LOVE these bargains--but I have stopped running there to see what is on sale--
as I simply DO NOT have room in my freezer...Already have a slew of steaks frozen.
I pass them on to my daughter and SIL as needed...for a fraction of my cost..

G.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Gita, if I got deals like that I would have no freezer space either. I most often cook for 4, so my in-laws get some. how do you do it? Cook for 1. I'd have to find a shut-in and feed them. My great aunt did just that, delivering meal to older singles from their church. She'd often cook for six and give at least half away. It gave her cause.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

How do I do it? I usually cook a large amount at one time--as long as i am cooking.....
why not?

Sometimes I share a dinner with Aina and Mark. But--Mark is the cook there--loves to grill..
and he plans ahead--so my hand-outs are not always welcome.

Tomorrow--I am taking this gourmet lunch to one of my favorite Guys at the HD.
Tony! He works in plumbing...I am very fond of him--he is the most respectful,
helpful, nice young (42) man. We hit it off from day one. He is very quiet.....
he calls himself "boring".... BUT--you need some help--and he is there in a minute.

Other than that--I end up eating the same thing for a week. Sometimes it gets too Ho--Hum..
Love these BQ ribs--no problem there.....only have about 6 or 7 left to go...:o)
Made Green beans--and fried up delicious, sliced taters after I came in from the yard.
I concoct seasonings and herbs I use as I cook. Never has anything come out not yummy.

Overall--I cook pretty seldom--as I am a grazer--and there is always this and that to
niggle on. Breakfast is the ONLY "meal" I eat every day.
Even had the BQ ribs for breakfast the morning after I made them.

I have no objection what so ever to leftovers, but I like something different day to day. Many times I turn leftovers into something else. Like taking leftover homefries and sausage adding sauteed peppers and eggs and making a breakfast more resembling an omelet. Roast chicken = chicken salad. Roast pork= BBQ.

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Last night, our left-over roast chicken became a chicken pot pie. And I even ate ALL my peas!! < =)
Left-overs rock!!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I agree!!

Yesterday was a soup and sandwich kind of day.

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Guess who will be our dinner tonight (along with some sweet & tangy chicken & Roma II beans we grew in the garden last year?

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

OK, I cannot guess for the life of me -- what is it!?!?

Oh, wait.... you said "who"... Bambi?? < =D

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

They are Shiitake Mushrooms from the first batch to grow & mmmmmm were they good!

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Man, that is just so cool!! Could you please share with us about growing them? (Hmmm... not sure if this is the right forum for it, but gosh, I really wanna know!) Thank you! :)
They look really yummy!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Veal Parmesan, pasta and a salad for dinner

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Yum!

Baked taters with chili and toppings and a salad

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Oh Jan, that sounds double-yummy!!!

On the menu for tonight: Winner winner Chicken Dinner. =)
Roast chicken, mashed taters/gravy, corn .. and maybe dinner rolls. :) I'm hungry!

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Left overs tonight: Baked chicken casserole. (Canned chicken, macaroni noodles, mushroom soup, canned mushrooms & assorted spices.) 3rd & last meal out of this casserole.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

turkey chili
Buttoneer, with two boys here I'm lucky to get ONE whole meal from a recipe LOL

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Sally, Just the 2 of us old fogies. LOL

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Hehehe, Sallyg, do you sit with your fork ready to stab anyone coming close to your own plate....hey, mom, are you going to eat that? Maybe, I'm just saying that cuz I sat around a table with 4 boys. Thankfuly two were pretty picky!!! Hehehehe

Jeff won't be home for dinner tonight, so maybe I'll go out.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

haha Jan! Maybe that's how my mom got the habit of eating the wings off the roast chicken when we were little. I never thought maybe that was all that was ever left!

mmmm wings.......

I'm home today so I should 'cook'. Tomorrow I work late and dinner is on somebody else.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I totally understand why she ate the wings. My usual mom thing is to be last, so I know everyone else is fed. (Or else I would hide stuff)

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Totally a mom thing! And NOT a dad thing! I bite my tongue when the Mr. takes a hearty serving before seeing how hungry the kids are LOL....And yep that's why we supplement with CHOCOLATE.

Noticed a second bag of potatos so I better do potatos with dinner...Cut up in small chucks and done in a skillet with bacon grease was really yummy the other night .

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I was wondering why we like chocolate sooo much. Hehehe.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

sally--

Why use just the bacon grease?
Fry up some real bacon--use the grease and crumble the rest and mix it into the potatoes...
A little Onion Powder and Garlic powder...a pinch of Caraway Seed--and a sprinkle of dill.

Voila! Yummy Taters...

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Duly noted Gita! I think taters with bacon is a meal right there.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I save bacon grease and use some when the bacon is gone. Totally agree that bacon and taters could be a meal. Sometimes I do that with the hot potato salad.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Your hot potato salad was great!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

It is a favorite! A little different every time depending on what I feel like adding.

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

You guys are making me hungry!!! Popped the lasagna into the oven just a few minutes ago, so I'm sitting here drooling over all the yummy potatoes, tummy rumbling "Feed Me!". =)

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

YUM, lasagna!!!!

Got pizza for ME since Jeff wasn't home for dinner.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Well, Jan, you could get whatever kind you want without having to take anybody else's opinion under consideration.
Me, I am tired of pizza- seen it too regularly over the last fifteen years LOL. Like when I tell Mark, I don't care where we go as long as I don't get "french fries with it!"

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

At the one local market they sell bacon ends, they're usually pretty well sliced. I often get them for under $1.50#. I'll fry up a # or so to use in soup and save all the drippings for homefries. When I do homefries I use EVOO and add 4-6 tbs. of bacon drippings for the flavor. I use them for other things too, like flavoring greenbeans.

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Well, you've gone and done it now Ric -- now I want bacon, and it's entirely your fault! =P

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Oh, that reminds me of my grandma. She always had a pot of green beans with bacon AND a rhubarb custard pie. When I was looking for a scone recipe a few days ago I pulled out her cookbook. On the inside of the front cover were three hand written page numbers. Page 318 was the recipe for rhubarb custard pie. You know what I'll be making this sprung.

I could still get pizza often without getting tired ofit. It certainly doesn't cost what it did twenty years ago when the kids were younger, though.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Ric--You and I cook much the same--at least with bacon and Gr. beans...

There is a saying in Latvia when it comes to cooking....

"One good thing never ruins another (good thing)....."
