Effect of moving bulbs between countries

Camberley, United Kingdom

Just theoretical:
In Australia daffodils flower in August.
In the UK daffodils flower in March.

How would the flowering date of the daffodil react if you bring bulbs from Australia and plant them in the UK ?

Bedford, VA(Zone 7a)

As long as the bulbs have a good store of food, and get some of the cold weather (chilling) they need, they would bloom in March in the UK. They respond to the seasons not to what month it is, so even if they didn't have enough energy to bloom, they will still try to send up leaves to make their food. BTW August in Australia is their Spring season, so it is comparable to March in the UK

Contra Costa County, CA(Zone 9b)

I think that as long as they got the minimum chilling they needed they would switch seasons just fine. A dragonfly mentioned, perhaps their first year might not be spectacular, but they would adjust.

Thankyou for that advice. Very interesting.

First of all, for anyone wishing to take or bring back bulbs, / plants of any kind from another Country / Continent or whatever, they need to check first of all with import / export of LIVING goods, being posted, in your suitcase, or however they are to be shipped as there is a lot of rules and regulations regarding this subject and NOT all of it is to be ignored. so be aware of this situation as the penalties can be expensive and costly to health also.

With regards to the Daffodil question about different flowering times and seasons, no matter where you live, given or replicating the growing conditions, that means cooler conditions IF the plants grow naturally in these conditions, likewise with regards to plants requiring warmer/ sheltered or shady conditions, drier soil or wet / damp soil, a plant over time will adjust to the season, so first year growing here after being brought over from Australia may cause delayed flowering OR NONE at all, however, second year you would expect the bulbs to have adjusted to temp, light, season and anything else, that is assuming the bulbs are all of flowering size and standard.
Good luck. WeeNel.

The cold weather they need, they would bloom in March in the UK. and With regards to the different flowering times and seasons.
