Viburnum tinus 'Spring Bouquet'

Beavercreek, OR

This plant has been so beautiful in two different locations in my yard for a number of years. Held its leaves through the winter and a strong early bloomer. This year - leaves are almost all gone! We've had more cold than usual. The baby plants I added last year are ok, leaves on and blooming. But my older, established ones have lost the leaves and I see no intention of blooming. Should I prune back or ??? Seems like the wrong time. Just wait and see...??? Any help? Thx!!

Some additional information - in the way of images - is in order here. If unable to do so, I can only offer a bit of advice.

Pictures of the whole plant, closeups of the stems, leaves, and buds - all these will be useful. Take a clipping of the plant, too, and bring it indoors to examine and photograph.

When you take a clipping, you should be able to see if the tissue of the stem is still green or not. If green, then it is likely still alive and will push out new growth from whatever leaf buds are extant. Flower buds would have been set last fall, so images would show whether any are there or not.

Broadleaf evergreen plants react to cold weather in a variety of ways, depending on the severity and extent of the cold. Defoliating is one way, to reduce moisture loss from the plant, but it doesn't mean the plant is dead. The cold may have killed the flower buds (if present) so you won't see them open if that is the case.

I would NOT prune anything until you have had a reasonable amount of warm weather, and the plant can demonstrate how much of it is alive and likely to grow.

You can always take it off - but you can't put it back.

Thank you! We have had a few warm days, but not enough yet I believe. I will take a closer look, I do believe they are alive, just not used to seeing them defoliated, such a shock to my gardeners heart!
