Wow! This is my first post in a few years! We moved last May and we will be putting up our above ground pool and deck in our backyard. It is full sun, zone 5b/6a and VERY windy.
I would like to landscape around the pool, but I'm kind of drawing a blank. I was thinking of irises or possibly daylilies and mulch. Kind of run of the mill and boring.
The sides of the pool are grey/white. The deck will be painted white to match the pergola we plan on putting up either this summer or next.
I would love some COLOR, but I need something that can withstand the wind. Those lovely pine trees in the photo are NOT at the new place. We have acres and acres of open farm fields and wind turbines. It is really quite windy.

Are you also looking for some plants that will eventually grow tall enough to filter or deflect the wind?
Generally plants that handle the wind best, and have some color are usually low, tough plants, usually with some woodiness to the stems.
You might look into plants that are listed as good for the seacoast, too. Lots of wind there!
Also, plants that are native to your area, especially the open, windy areas might be worth looking into.
Your zone is a lot colder than mine, so I am not sure what plants are OK there.
You can also try protecting the plants from some of the wind by planting them in dense groups with a background shrub that will break the force of the wind. This background plant might be some tough, 'plain ol' green thing' like a juniper, but the flowers will show off in front of it and be all the nicer because of being protected from the wind.
It would be nice if some of those 'plain ol' green' things were tall enough on the windy side to block the wind from the bathers! And green will look nice all winter, too, when the pretty colors are all dormant.
