So i have a batch of Short and Sweet, and Purple Haze carrot seed for this years veggie patch, along with Easter Egg radish, and Butterhead and Romaine lettuce. I live in zone 7A, so what would be the earliest time i could get away with direct sowing them outdoors, seeing as they are all typically cool weather loving plants. our typical weather for this time of year is high 30's, 40's to 50's with a rare 60's during the day, and nights range from mid to low 30's, 20's, and rarely teens. Or should i wait to see if another massive cold snap passes through first?
Best time in spring to plant carrot seed?
Let me see if I can find that chart forr you.
Ok. Here in the forums there is our very own 'Gardening by the Moon'. In the 'Guides and Information' tab there is a place to enter your zone and get frost and unfreeze expectations for YOUR area of the world. As well, you might enjoy this link, www.the-gardeners-calendar.co.uk/ hmm gotta fix it. Seeds should tell you when the earth is right temp to plant, but it isnt just one general time for those of us in Texas say, so many wont know how to tell you do this now.

My carrots were planted mid Oct and have survived tho small, the weather we've gotten. They did need a bit of warmth to sprout and get past the first leaves
thanks, that moon gardening guide honestly had my head spinning, lol! i got far more out of the zone thing you mentioned. Was thinking for the cole crops i could push on the frost freeze dates was why i was asking just how early i could get by with direct sowing in my location.
The moon gardening forum goes hand in hand with your Zone- - a zone 5 cant plant by a zone 10 chart, but plants benefit by being planted by the moon. The old folks didnt get so technical- root crops go in by the dark of the moon, above ground fruits are planted by the full moon...glad it helped. Many plants like a tomato needs 50* ground temp to grow. Enjoy!
Well my chart says mid April for zone 6 so your's should be a bit earlier.
The chart for my area states to direct sow between feb 1st and march 15th
