CLOSED: 2014 Spring Round Robin Seed Swap - Interest Thread!

Kiowa, CO(Zone 5b)

Dome if you got from me they are Nicotiana sandersae, approx 24-30", not sure I had any straight pink tho, could have been straight purple (Nikki) or mix of all colors.. If they are the white they would be Nicotiana sylvestris 4-6ft tall. Both are Very Fragrant...
Just to let ya know...you can direct seed the shorter variety. Personally I've never had the tall ones reseed themselves but the sandersaes can and love it when they do... Both are favs of Hawkmoths and Hummers! (Oh ya, me too!) I'll be starting my sylvestris in a week or so.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Can't give my plants what they need indoors , and My winter sow efforts are going to have to wait a while still .. snow , snow and more snow .
Saying hi Kathy ,,, you hear zone envy all the time ,,
I'm having Green Thumb Envy ,, watching you ..lol

still plays (Becky) I did find those Medusa pepper seeds .. They will be in there for you .!

Kiowa, CO(Zone 5b)

Juhur, lol, Ya I know I always end up with more than I can use but....... Atleast I have a great choice to choose from when I go out to plant... Hope the g.kids allow me the time this summer to get a bunch done... Got alot I'd like to do with them this summer but also wanna plant! Have been working with the girls on Watercolor Painting, they both got art kits (watercolor, acrylics, oil, colored pencil, charcol) for Christmas.

Prescott, AZ(Zone 7b)

Amanda, hope you and Snoopy are doing better. I'm coming off of a long very nasty cold too and have great sympathy for anyone who feels lousy. Take your vitamin C and echinacea.

WWK, I think I'm going to put the nicotiana in next. I'm hoping some of these labeled "white" are the tall kind. If not I'll just have to crawl around in the dirt to smell them, LOL. Last year was the first time I grew nicotiana and I'm hooked. The ones I have are just showy enough and the good bugs love them. My new "nectar" garden is proving to be too small, it's going to be so full of flowers I don't think I'll be able to weed (or probably walk) between them! I guess I can just rip out the annuals next Fall and clean up then, LOL. The "nectar" garden is fenced and has all the deer food flowers in it. I can put the nicotiana and all the poisonous plants out in the pasture, bambi seems to do a pretty good job of not eating them.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Quote from juhur7 :
When I use the small bags .. I can't write out the Latin name for garden Tomato .. I do not have the printer for mini labels, and I can't see that small anyway ..lol
Oh well...a small rule break? ...lol

Oh, for heaven's sake! You don't need to put the Latin name for the tomato. However, it is necessary to put it on the other types of plants such as flowers and shrubs, since many have common names and they can get mixed up with other plants with the same common name. You must know this....

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

I have the robin now... Lots of people have put the details on a slip of paper inside the bags of each kind of seeds. Some have even folded the paper. Just so you identify what you are sending so we don't get weird surprises in a year or two when they finally bloom, lol.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Well , you know , Winter has a weird effect on me . Concentrating on things I don't want to do , and witting about things I would rather be doing ..
Messes up my not so mental , (mentals ..
Next time the weathers decent and I'm doing , I will send them along ..

Me I would like to send the equator , palm island , and warmth . Have to find the right size box though.. he , he . he .. Yeah I'm silly .. A plane and a chair sounds about right .

Prescott, AZ(Zone 7b)

On labels . . .
I try to do excellent labels because it makes looking up the plant sooo much easier. I have received plants that have a common name on them and when I looked it up there were several species with the name, some short and some tall. Just last night I was sorting through seed I have received in several fall trades. Well, I have this one "Grandpa Charlie". I had a grandpa Charlie I'd like to grow another one, I miss him. I figured out it is a tomato, I think there are thousands of tomatoes. But it took me a minute and it could still be something else.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

I didn't mean to say that not labeling the seeds tomatoes...yes, say tomato, and then the cultivar name, just not so important to put Lypersicon esculentum or Lypersicon lypericum especially if you are short on space.

However it might be good to label them with the botanical name if they are a different species of tomato.

Prescott, AZ(Zone 7b)

I don't think I'd recognize Lypersicon as a tomato, LOL. And I label most everything in latin. I didn't think you meant not to label it "tomato", I just thought the "Grandpa Charlie" was kind of funny.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

My "Biggie" with labels . Are the "Mint" There are so many plants , that contain the word "Mint" in them it is endless,

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

As before my mood is becoming (burned out on packing seeds) The seeds are dry and done but not all were packed or labeled , Most I have done that were asked for ,
Most I listed are in the box , Seed stalks like the stinging nettle and milkweed (Syrica and Honeyvine , I did not get to ,
So if anyone wants more , or those, if you were not in the robin before say and I will do a few , otherwise I'm done ..

Planting or counting them to grow is fun ,
But if I wit , cut, sort .sift, screen, one more time to myself , I might go nuts !!!(short trip ) lol

Snoopy is not faring well, and I have personal strife as well.

Will keep an eye on the thread and wait for the Robin to return to my doorstep. :)

I think we may be turning the corner here in the Piedmont. At least I can try to look forward to some flowers.

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

Hey Beth LONNNNNNG Time No hear :) Welcome back hope to see ya more :)
I'm not into this one but still watching ya all :)

Lakeland, FL(Zone 9a)

Is there still time to join the 2014 swap? I'd love to join!

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Hey Everybody - the First Round is not complete, but should be shortly. I haven't set a deadline to participate so plenty of time still to join.

I don't know that she will leave before March.

If you have seed that you would like to ship to me to include in the second round for everyone to have a grab at from the get go, please feel free to do so.

I am still dealing with a very old ill geriatric dog, as well as relationship breakup and finishing my master's degree project for graduation this spring.

Thanks to Susie and everybody for helping to make the Robin run more smoothly. :)

~Amanda, a/k/a "Seed Nazi"

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Take care, Amanda...we love you!! ^_^

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

awww thanks Ev. :)

My dog Snoopy is very ill, but we're doing what we can to keep her comfy. I even called in a hospice vet (!!!) (yes I am)(very crazy)(or eccentric, depending on who you talk to).

Anyway, turns out perhaps not to be kidney disease/failure but a UTI that migrated up to the kidney!!! Poor old dog. I've had that happen to me, and I've gone to the hospital for it - laid up in the bed for days, oy.

We're hoping she will pull up. She's lost a lot of weight and I can't bring myself to turn on the computer so feeling like I had to come and check in on DG.

Hope the snow is melting where you are too. I just ruined my boyfriend's bedslippers by sloshing out there in the snow - I heard the hawk in my yard and had to chase.

Looks like we'll have a good turn out for the spring trade.

Juhur - I just received your box of seeds. Impressive!!! :)

The Fall Robin only has 2 more stops, so we could be starting at the beginning of March. It's good to get it out early ; everyone will have a chance to start the seeds for this season.

Peace!

A.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Here's hoping all goes well for you and Snoopy ...!!!

Sunny day and five new inches of snow here ...

be back ,. hope it does well (the seeds ) for all who try them ..

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to you and Snoopy Amanda. Hang in there and don't forget to count your blessings (that always got me through very tough times).

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Wow, been offline a bit acquiring materials for my 'high hopes garden 2014', missed a lot of activity on DG in the meantime, but will be checking in more frequently now that I've got most of the hard part done.

Juhur, thanks for thinking of me, I am veryyy excited about those tomatoes and peppers!
Also I'm in the same boat with my seeds of Standing Cypress, they are such a pain in the butt to clean, I will add enough for a few small trades unless someone specifies they are wanting them and in that case I will add more, but don't want to spend a whole day cleaning if they are not wanted. LOL

So far this is what I'll be adding to the bird, for sure:
Commercial:
Coleus, Rainbow mix
Salvia, Bonfire (red)
Alyssum (purple)
California Poppy (orange)

Personally collected, will add enough for a few trades:
Kiwano Horned melon, Cucumis metuliferus
Standing Cypress, Ipomopsis rubra
Wooly White, Hymenopappus scabiosaeus
Blazing Star, Liatris mucronata
Black-Eyed Susan, Rudbeckia hirta
Dwarf Cleome, Polanisia dodecandra
Texas Yellowstar, Lindheimera texana
Drummond's Rain Lily, Zephyranthes drummondii
Pitcher Sage, Salvia azurea
Texas Bluebell, Eustoma grandiflorum

I also have these I can add if anyone is interested:
Western Ironweed, Vernonia baldwinii
Wingpod Purslane, Portulaca umbraticola
Drummond's Onion, Allium drummondii
Little Bluestem grass, Schizachyrium scoparium
American Wild Carrot, Daucus pusilus
Sweet Basil, No ID
Pale Leaf Yucca, Yucca pallida
Texas Mountain Laurel, Calia secundiflora
Horse Crippler cactus, Echinocactus texensis
American Persimmon, Diospyros virginiana
Chaste Tree, Vitex agnus castus

I plan on sending all to Amanda from the jump off, if I have a 5 day or so heads up, that'll be plenty of time to priority ship to NC. Happy gardening all, this warm week has been a super sweet break from all that frosty weather!

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Forgot to mention I also have a few seeds of Ponderosa Lemon I can toss in :)

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

oh cool I hope so it is so pretty did you grow it last year ? can you tell me how tall it got if you did .

Paddock Lake, WI

Hi! I'm new to DG. Wondering how this seed swap works. Are these mostly annual seeds that one would plant in the spring? Or do folks save them to wintersow or to start seedlings indoor over next winter? I got married last year to my dh who has a couple acres, and it was all overgrown and untended for about 7 years when his wife died. My daughter and I spent last summer cutting down grass, tilling a small veggie garden area, and planting a small garden near the house. Now I'm dying to rejuvenate more areas, but of course I don't have money for all the things I'd like to grow! (am determined to learn how to collect seeds now, too!)

Hi Amanda, so sorry to hear about your loss. I recently lost a furry family member of 13 years and I know how you feel. I would like to be added to the list for the 2014 Round Robin.
I will post what I have later today(right now I have to get to my job so I can support this gardening "addiction" I have)
I have been reading the posts here and this sounds like fun. Am looking forward to Spring and warmer weather! Above freezing temps would be a welcome change. I am with juhur7 on this "neverending winter". It is enough to mess with your mind!!!
Think Spring!!!!Happy thoughts!!!
