CLOSED: 2013 Fall Round Robin/Seed Swap -On the Wing (Round 1) P. 2

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Greetings:

This is a continuation of the flight of the 2013 Fall Round Robin! Our first thread following the migration of the bird got to be a little lengthy. Participants can skip the following copy and paste from our prior threads (links to prior thread and Want and Have list pages are at the bottom of this post):

This swap is closed to new participants.

The following is a tentative flight path, subject to change. Please ensure that the HOST has your telephone number and that you check DG at least daily when the Robin is in your region.

If we don't hear from you - we won't ship to you. Your name will go to the end of the list, and you may receive the Robin on its return flight.

RULZ:

In the interest of FAIRNESS to participants
and to maintain the INTEGRITY of the Round Robin tradition
we each agree to:

(1) Treat the Robin as an individual swap taking the same time and care with our contributions to the Robin as we would with an individual trade;
(2) Take what you want, give what you can, generous in contribution and modest in appropriation - particularly if the amount of seed in the Robin is scant;
(3) Contribute only seed of known origin (commercial seed, harvested from our own garden, etc.) not older than 2011;
(4) Package our seed contributions to the Robin in clear plastic zip lock bags and/or glassine envelopes so that contents are visible and easily accessible by other participants in the Robin;
(5) Properly label our seed contributions to the Robin with our DG Name, common and botanical name of species contributed, and date of origin (PREFERABLY ON PAPER LABEL INSIDE BAG/ENVELOPE);
(6) Respond within 24 hours to communications from other participants and HOST of the Robin by dmail, telephone, or other means deemed acceptable by the HOST;
(7) Post on the main thread the arrival and departure date(s) of the Robin into and out of each participant's possession;
(8) Maintain possession of the Robin not longer than 4 days including holidays and weekends;
(9) Ship the Robin to the next participant as directed by the HOST;
(10) Submit USPS tracking/confirmation information by dmail to the HOST only, not by public thread;
(11) Be a good sport; and/or
(12) Be hung in effigy and/or ostracized forever by participants and/or HOST for failure to follow these RULZ.

*******************************************************

We are a friendly bunch dedicated to seed swapping and hoarding.

Many of us have participated in this time honored tradition hosted in the past by Susie (deejay9). Some of us have not participated in the Robin before. Please feel free to ask any questions of the HOST or participants on this public thread or by dmail.

Thanks for playing and for unabashedly pointing out any flaws or errors inherent in the HOST's logic or lack thereof.

~Amanda

As the Robin tradition goes, our esteemed former hostess, Susie (deejay9) offered a prize to whomever could guess when the Robin would return to her possession.

We must continue and preserve tradition of course, so here are the guesses so far from our participants. I will keep these entries here at the top of our new thread so they are easy to find and so the winner can do a "superiority dance" (see below) when appropriate:

Hey Pam...how 'bout putting a link up to the germination thread for those newbies that might be interested in germination times and the differing methods we are using for starting our seeds.....?
(thankyou! lol)

Kathy, I didn't hit send on that request...are you clairvoyant? Doesn't matter, you're still incorrigible!

Here's the link to the germination thread:

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1344533/

We started it last year, and it was amazing how much information was shared about so many different kinds of seeds and methods. I learned a ton. This year we're already off to a good start. Come join us!

Mippi..LOL...Not me!!!!! Come join in the fun! I'm going to try and figure out a way to add all that I start and days to germinate if I can figure out how to set up the info in my Journal.

Anyone having info on how to use the Journal feature....please share..or do I need to put into my Diary here at Dave's? ie. Alcea r. Black Beauty, 4-6ft S.1/12/14, G 1/16/14., and any other notes I might need to add. Want to do columns so will be easier to read.. Mostly will be for my record keeping but others might find the info useful too.

Kathy - I've used the journal feature for a few seasons now. It's the hierarchy you have to figure out, but after that it's pretty intuitive (sort of) though I could see room for improvement. You know how it is getting improvements around here. ack.

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Kathy, what about using an Excel spreadsheet, do you know Excel?

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

I use a spread sheet but I don't have a perfect system. It's hard to get all the details in, especially as I change some things every season. Also, I start out OK, then taper off when things really get going. Some things from later on last year i only have the date i started the seeds, not what happened. So I also have a journal where I can put in some of the fine points, and I look back to that if I need more info about previous years.

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Pam, some time this weekend I'll provide some screenshots to better your system (when I don't have to go to work). Tapering off sounds like human error not software/program issues...lol! Perhaps I'll start its own thread and call it 'Record Keeping'.

Kiowa, CO(Zone 5b)

Sorry..don't know what Excel is. Nor how to do a spread sheet. You would think Dave's would have something set up for us, or should I say it would be nice if they did.

And Mipii that would be great!

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

excel is a wonderful and after you play around with it, very easy. The best way to learn a program is to have something you want to create, then that desire really provides to fuel for learning.

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

I do most everything on the iPad now. It's great when I wake up in the middle of the night, I catch up on a lot of stuff then. But Excel and Word, etc, don't have all the features. Still I'm able to do a lot.

Pics are 2013 and this year. You can see how the followup diminished as the season progressed, lol.

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

pam that is the same spread as an excel sheet but I can see how it is easier to use, as I don't believe you can open a word or excel spreadsheet on iPads. Now when you can open and use those programs on the iPads then I'll maybe be finding a way to have an iPad.

great sheet you got going.

I use Word/Excel on my laptop extensively and can open the files on my iPad with little trouble using Documents to Go. There are not as many features easily used on the iPad, but at least I can open them, check things, and modify them some on the iPad. :)

Kiowa, CO(Zone 5b)

Is this info avail on dave's within our diary (journal) or blog. And if not how would you transfer the info. If not avail on Dave's how and where to go on the puter?

Kathy - some of what you are looking for is on DG although nowhere as extensive as Pam's journaling. This what I have if I click on my alliums tab in my journal. I could have added more information, but did not. I believe the number of fields that DG makes available cannot be added. Not sure if this helps.

Thumbnail by Carolyn22 Thumbnail by Carolyn22
(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

I'm glad you think my spreadsheet is extensive... I add to it every year when I can't find some detail from a previous year. It drives me crazy that I think I'm covering everything, then the next year there I am again, trying to find the answer to some really specific question, and it's not there. Grrrrrr... ;-)

Kiowa, CO(Zone 5b)

Carolyn...is that available here at Dave's? How do I access it? Looks good enough to be able to add all the info I would need..

Pam, yours in wonderful too but not available here huh... Darn..lol. And did you buy that plant of indigo spires or grow from seed (ever), info here at Dave's says is sterile or may not come true from seed, my reason for wondering.. Where did you get origonal plant? And I noticed someone from Denver had it listed as growing here...yeah!!!!

More seeding today and a few of the things already started are starting to pop their little heads up..yeah!

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

Kathy it is warm enough were you live for them to be sprouting already????? If so then maybe CO isn't too bad (weather wise) to live in during the winter....LOL

Athens, PA

Kathy

Yes, that is on DG. I entered a number of different things into my DG Journal and have them listed by type of plant. When I click on my 'alliums' tab, then all of the alliums I entered under that category come up.

Yes, Pam, your journaling is extensive. I love what you are doing with your journaling. There is so much information right at your fingertips. I don't have an ipad though, nor do I have an iphone.

I have used excel spreadsheets myself for journaling. What I like about excel is that I can color code the journal. I haven't kept that journal in a number of years, but the thing I like about excel is that you can color code different line items. I used to have the color coding set up by what flowered in what season. Hmmm..... Sounds like a good way to get through the rest of the winter. This winter seems like forever.

I received an email from Judy. Apparently I am next for the robin. I can't wait! Wish I was out in the backyard now.

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

Color coding sounds great! I'm too lazy to use the PC... I can be on the iPad anywhere, not pinned to one spot. It weighs very little so I always have it in my bag-- dr's offices, the bus, etc. Otherwise I don't think I'd have the patience to sit and write all that stuff. My best time is in the wee hours. I usually wake up for an hour or two, and I can lie in bed and be on it without disturbing DH.

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

Oh wow, I'm next after you, Carolyn. The robin is just whizzing along! Yay!

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Hey Carolyn - thanks for not making me call to track you down. :D
