What is Spiegel?

My father has told me of his father gathering many wild things which he mixed together and drank daily. He said it kept him healthy and apparently did since he was never ill. One of the plants was Spiegel. I cannot find anything about it. I have searched the web and it refers to fennel, but Dad says it was Spiegel. Any idea? This would have been in southern WV.
