We have a four foot chainlink fence at the top of a steep hill in our yard. We are planning on planting various colors of Cape Honeysuckle by the fence. Does anyone know if the Honeysuckle will pull down the fence? Someone told us it would intertwine with the fence and pull it down. Has anyone had this happen? We thought the plant would actually help support the fence. Are we wrong?
Will Cape Honeysuckle pull down a chainlink fence?
Are you asking about Tecoma capensis? (older name: Tecomaria capensis, and before that Bignonia capensis, also Tecoma petersii)
IME this can be grown as a free-standing shrub. It does not twine. It can be kept as a hedge or less formal shrub from about 4' to 10' high. Be quite diligent about trimming it to size. It may try to sprout from under the ground away from where you want it. Get rid of these.
Most other plants called Honeysuckle (Lonicera) are mostly vining plants and some can get quite aggressive.
