Ric's Road to Recovery

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

I am a regular napper when I can fit them in; the trick is to *not* nap for too long... at least, it is the trick for me. A good 20-minute "power nap" really revives me BIG TIME, but does not interfere with my nighttime sleep at all.

Each person, of course, must adjust accordingly. :)

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Sounds right to me Speedie. It takes me so long to fall asleep so if I use an alarm to wake me up I wouldn't know what to set it for.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I quite often set an alarm for a nap or try to nap just before something or someone is likely to disturb me. If I sleep my fill, then I', like you Terri. up all night. Matter of fact I just did that yesterday. LOL

Drove myself to Lebanon VA hosp. for an appointment yesterday. I'm kinda' sore and tired today. I'm sitting here trying to get enough ambition to take my truck for inspection.

Just keep listening to your body, Ric and adjust accordingly. Hoping your truck passes muster.

Our grand, Lucas has always been a sharing person. Since he went to daycare, he's shared everything he's come into contact with me. He was the only one I snuggled with on Christmas, and he's done it again. I have a miserable cold. I truly (after 60+ years) cannot figure where all the sh-tuff that comes outa' your head got there. I may love him dearly, but I've renamed him L3 (L-cubed). Lil' Leoprus Lucas". After watching videos of pre-schoolers sharing germs, I understand, but I didn't realize just how many back muscles are involved in sneezing. LOL

I will survive. ROTFLMAO

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

awwwwwwwww!!!!!!
Reminds me of the first time I sneezed after childbirth………….no abs left!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Too funny! ROTFLMAO again!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Feel better soon. It is amazing how much schtuff can fit in a head.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

When I'm baby sitting, I take my own supply of Saline and Mucinex and those cool soft tissues.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

There's that saline rinse system, a friend of mine swears by. I have used it. But you can't really do it when you're totally shtuffed up. She says it prevented her usual chronic winter problems.
Hope you feel better soon!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Happy New Year!!!
I did feel better today, and I do use a neti pot with a saline solution. It helps a lot. I like the aloe tissues or TP when I have a nasty head cold too, keeps you nose from getting red and sore. It's sort of funny, I sneezed so much my chest is sore.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Hope you feel better soon, Ric! That much sneezing does not sound good! :-(

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

happy new year!
Great attitude, Ric ---cuz it does not sound sort of funny! Nice sunny day for a breath f fresh air.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Much better today, still sore, but able to cook a big New Years meal for any family wishing to attend.

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Aaaaw man Ric, I'm so sorry to hear about your getting sick, but sure glad you seem to be feeling better now!! Yeah, it's amazing how much shtuff fits in our heads when we have a cold... We become FatHeads!! < =D

BossMan was telling me before Christmas that, what he does for head/nasal congestion (instead of a neti pot), is to fill a bowl with HOT salty water, stand over a sink, scoop up a double handful of the hot salt water and inhale it through his nose (goes against every grain of my body to stick my nose into a handful of water and SNORRRRT deeply, let me tell you!!) ... then, just let 'nature do its thing' as he expels it into the sink... in whatever way nature makes it happen. UGH, sounds awful to me, but he swears it helps him a lot; clears ALL the shtuff right out of every nook and cranny... so he tells me. I've yet to get up the nerve to try it though. ;)

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!! Here's to feeling better!! >---l

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

My father used to do that, Speedie, and I thought it was awful also. However, his head cleared up long before anyone else when we all were nursing bad colds together.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Speedie, what an image!! O.o

Ric, hope you feel better soon!

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

It sounds horrifically gaggingly disgusting, huh? I think my problem with it is that I gag really easily, and .... well, anyway, just the thought of the whole thing has me gagging just talking about it.

Roses, maybe one day we can each be manly enough like your Dad to try this. ;)

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

I almost drowned trying it when I was very young. Didn't have the correct technique.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

speedie, I know what you mean.
There is a plastic bottle system you can buy in the drugstore which makes it easier and more sanitary. And there are videos of people doing it on the internet. It is reallyreally weird when you first do it.

Glad to hear you feel much better Ric

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

speedie--

I guess that is the same as gargling with salt water when you have a sore throat.

You were a nurse? Remember that saline in our tissues always seeks the
same concentration on both sides of the tissues. What's that called???
isotonics??? osmosis????

SO--salt water in your nose or throat would reduce the swelling by equalizing
the saline content in the swollen tissues...

I know i did not explain or remember this correctly--but I hope you know what
I am talking about...

Lots of people at the HD are also walking around with congestion....
Many people swear by Airborn tablets once a day at this cold season.
I believe it contains mega-doses of all kinds of vitamins to ward off a cold.

I have been using a saline spray called Simply Saline by Arm and Hammer for the last year. It was recommended to me by a Dutch passenger on a cruise where so many people had a horrible upper respiratory infection. Usually I get sinus infections when I cruise because of being exposed to all the coughing and colds people get in such a confined area. My last cruise this fall, which was quite long, was the first time in three years that I did not contract the "crud" that was going around. I am also using it a lot this winter because I notice my sinuses are drying out due to being so housebound. Clearly the humidity level is not high enough so the sinuses tend to dry out and then one is more prone to infection. The Simply Saline has different concentrations. There is a nasal mist and one for Allergy and Sinus. It is easy to use. Other friends find it useful in the spring to clear their passages of irritating pollen. I'm sure there are other brands but this is easy to find in most drug stores. Everyone stay well and warm with the next coming winter onslaught!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

The neti pot is just a more civil way to snort salt water. LOL I did that for years before I finally got one. Mostly when I had a cold, but also to rinse out any irritating pollen of dust. I also use a Capsaicin spray, it really stimulates blood flow in the mucus lining of the nasal pharynx.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

gardadore, Don't think I ever thanked you for the Lion's Tail plant you sent to the swap with Roses for me. I wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed watching it this past summer and it bloomed beautifully.

Saylorsburg, PA(Zone 6a)

Holly,

Glad to hear it bloomed well for you this summer. They are always so much fun. Unfortunately they bloom so late that I often miss them because of fall travels. When I left they were just starting to open. But I plant them faithfully each year. As usual I will save some seedlings for you! Now we are hunkering down for the snow to come - very mixed reports on mow much we will get here - everything for 4-12" possible!! Ugh! More fun to think about all the pretties I can plant out there this spring. So glad to hear you are both doing better. All the best in 2014!!

Also for Ric - I have never used the Neti pot - I just use the spray can. Just been reading that using a Neti pot can actually introduce bad bacteria into the sinuses if one doesn't use boiled or sterile water! Think I'll stick with the spray can and just wipe it with a disinfectant cloth each time!

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Gardadore, I have a bottle of the saline you're referring to... I totally forgot about it!! Thank you for the reminder, I think I'll opt for that instead. =)

LOL Ric, "...a more civilized way to snort salt water". Haahahahaahaaa!!! When in the privacy of one's own loo, I don't think one worries too much about being civilized. ;)
"SNORT!" "GAAGG" "Hack - Cough - Choke - AAGGHHH". =)

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Yes Sally, that second one sounds rather industrial, I may consider it a viable candidate though. After a couple of days respite, my head cold is back with a vengeance. I'm just hoping I don't end up on antibiotics for an ear infection in the process. I usually never take antibiotics for a cold but sometimes need them for what's left behind, like a dreaded ear and sinus infection.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Ric--

Get some of the "Airborn" tablets. They are supposed to help you not get colds--
or Get Over your crud once you take them,
You dissolve one Tab in some water and chug it down in the AM.
They are flavored.....

The Alkalol looks to be pretty amazing. I read through a lot of the reviews on Amazon and all were most positive. I had never heard of this brand before but will certainly consider it if I get another sinus infection. Can't believe it's been around so long!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I take a good bit of ester c, or essential c during cold season. They pretty much do the same as airborne. Felling better today. It feels good, not having a rhino charging around in your head or stepping on your face. LOL I think calling it a RHINOvirus is very appropriate as to the way it can leave you feeling.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Went to see the surgeon and he said I'm pretty well off restrictions, and can't really hurt anything at this point. Yippee! Lifting to 40#s, carrying, shoveling, just to be careful and not over do it. A couple of nerves are still trying to sort themselves out, but should to continue to get better. The 1st week after surgery is becoming a distant memory, and at this point I've no regrets. Thank You all for the prayers and encouraging words. I looked forward to the conversation an ribbing that helped me forget I so was limited post-op.

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

YIPPEEEEE!!!!!!!!! That is such great news Ric, thank you for sharing it with us!! WOOHOOO, and THANK YOU LORD!!!!!!!! < =D

I think I will have to celebrate with something chocolate... in your honor! =D

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

He's back!! Now the world is right again.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Hooray!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

yay!!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

so glad to hear it, Ric!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Praising God for your great news!!! Now, to listen to your body and not overdo it. Slow and steady!!!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks all.
Sorry Jan I never was a tortoise, but just yet I don't have the strength or energy to be a hare. Maybe a frog, moving along with little hops.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Hehehe. Just listen to your body, please.
