Thanks for the Jim Croce link Ric and I enjoyed a U-Tube concert while we played cards last night.
Ric's Road to Recovery
Love that song, Crazy! :-)
I had the biggest crush on Debbie Reynolds, esp. after the Tammy movies, and Patsy Cline just makes me melt.
I remember many debuts on the Ed Sullivan Show, including "The Really Big Shue" in 1964 featuring the Fab Four.
oh, Ric, your memory of Feb 1964 is much clearer than mine! I was only 5! :-) Speedie, payback will come when you least expect it--LOL! :-D
OH, my God, sally!!!
I just listened to a whole album of Neal Diamond--my all time favorite singer...
Please tell me how you access this site where you can listen to all the biggies sing.
Maybe I should bookmark your link??? G.
Gita, I have no tricks! I only just happened upon this. It may just take you a little poking around Try this.. search for Youtube Album (your singer) Or open a Youtube link for your artist and then start looking for 'Album' in the links that come up alongside or under.
Speedie and Ric--just kidding! :-)
Catmint, I was 10, heck I remember all the radio stations playing Patsy's songs after she died the year before. Radio was my prime entertainment back then, I found an old green magic eye floor cabinet someone was tossing and drug it home to my bedroom. My uncle worked at a tv sales and repair shop and would test the vacuum tubes and supply me with replacements. By the time I was 12-13, I had a ground plane antenna extending around the roof line of the house. Back then quite a few stations went off the air at night and other stations in the same frequency range cranked up their output signal, there was one in Buffalo, NY that was rather edgy and played mostly rock, jazz, and blues. Life was much simpler then, no "57 channels and nothin' on".LOL
Ric, I remember the vacuum tube TVs and 4 channels (ABC, NBC, CBS, and one independent we could pick up by turning a knob on our TV to 'UHF'). Funny, one of my uncles had a TV repair shop, too!
I used to go to Montgomery Wards with Dad to pick up the vacuum tubes he'd need to fix the tv.
I bought a console record player wayyyy back when. It was walnut. had a nice hinged lid,
played all 3 speed records--loved it. I even remember how much I paid for it. $157.
It was full of tubes. Wonder if they are still god?????
I still have it--it is in a corner of the shop covered with an old beach towel,
It is mildewed inside and out.....YUK!
I think I always thought I would refurbish it so I could play my 78's on it.
Now they don't seem so appealing any more. Geez! The sound quality was awful!
But I played all kinds of love songs and dreamed silly teenage dreams....

SOme people still want turntables- quality ones.

I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas!!!
Was that a Hippopotamus or hypothalamus? Just finished a card game, listening to Santana and disco, some of that music really was inane. Then again some of it wants you to get up and dance.
OOPS Ric. LOL

I loved that song when I was a kid. A nice Pygmy Hippo would fit nicely in your yard. You know they had a couple of Hippos at the Aquarium when I was there and they let us get into the Shark tank with 26 sharks but we couldn't get into the tank with 2 Hippos. If we needed to remove a dead fish or something we had to do it before or after open hours when the Hippos were back in their pens.
You guys crack me up.
I still prefer listening to the oldies vs the current stuff. I've downloaded a bunch of singles to my iPod under a mix I call the "sappy 70s". Anyone remember Looking Glass 'Brandy', First Class 'Beach Baby', Mac Davis 'Don't Get Hooked on Me', King Harvest 'Dancing in the Moonlight', R. Dean Taylor 'Indiana Wants Me', Lobo ' Me and You and a Dog Named Boo', Dobie Gray 'Drift Away', gosh I could go on and on...
Brandy, you're a fine girl, but don't get hooked on dancing in the moonlight or Indiana will be after you and you'll just have to drift away. Yeah Terri, I remember all of them.
I really liked a bunch of oldies and still do,"Apache, Indian Lake, The Letter." Science tells us the sense of smell can affect memories, I believe aural stimulation can do the same. Sometimes I hear an old song and it takes me back to where and when. One I remember is: as I was walking into a theater at Fort Dix to see "Catch 22" they were showing previews of "Woodstock". It was the first time I heard Jimi Hendrix playing 'The Star Spangled Banner". WOW This was about the time I found a show called "The Marconi Experiment" WMMR, from Asbury Park.
I think this is about the time the phrase "dead air" came about, describing djs who were to stoned to realize the song was over. LOL
One of my favorites was:
Where Have all the Flowers Hone
And--wasn't there a song called "Dancing with my Shadow?
NOW--how many of you remember "Indian Love Call"? this was on a 78.
"When I'm calling Youuuuuu...Uuuuu-uuuu-uuuh
Wil you answer toooooo...uuuhhhuhhhh--uuuuhuuu--uh"
To be honest with you all--To this day--I prefer listening to music from other countries,
especially the old post-war German "Schlagers"...I still listen to them on tapes in my car...
I also have some awesome CD's from Latvia.
I have a theory! One's favorite music tends to be from that period of one's life
when they were falling in love with someone...dating---going to dances and movies, etc...
My life has been, in a way, 'stunted"--being plopped into the USA at age 14
when I could not speak a word of English put a dent in what kids normally do
at that age. We all lived through that same time--We all sort of, clung together--
stayed in our own nationality groups, went to parties, picnics, etc.
A lot of the ethnic groups still do this. The Italians...the Polish...the Greeks...
Makes Baltimore such an interesting, multi-ethnic City.
All the Festivals these groups still hold just reinforces this generation to generation....
OK! I have digresses again! Seems I do that a lot,,,, Gita

Songs really are associated with memories for me too. So many memories, but here is one that quickly comes to mind.
I can never hear the Eagles 'Desperado' without thinking of my college room mate. Our dorm rooms had sinks, but full restroom/shower facilities were shared by everyone. One evening after a late night studying, I went in to take a shower before going to bed. The place was deserted, except for one shower stall. Someone was in there and singing Desperado, but it was so horrible that it took me a while to even figure out what song it was - almost sounded like a sick cow mooing. I remember trying so hard not to laugh out loud. I didn't want to offend whoever it was because she was really into it. Anyway, we both finished up at about the same time and when she stepped out of the shower I discovered it was my own room mate ROFLOL. I freely admit that I can not sing, but this was way beyond bad. Now the jokes were game on, and to this day we laugh at her singing INABILITY and only have to sing the single word Desperado to have us rolling...
What a coincidence! We just got in from our 2 week vacation and cruise, and the first thing that I did to help me deal with the mess that we left and the stuff that we brought home was to turn on my "home made" cd's with Santana, Sting, Fleetwood Mac and all the old goodies. Next I sat down to catch up here and the conversation is about the music that I'm listening to.
A long time ago I downloaded about a thousand favorite songs and put lots of them on CDs before I realized that there was an issue with the downloading and stopped doing it free. I Tunes is really a very inexpensive and fair way to do it now.
Hoping your PT is going well, Ric!!!
Doing pretty good, hope to get to the pool tomorrow.
Being submerged in water is such a relief for body aches and pains. I'm near needing at least one hip replacement so I really appreciated floating and moving around in the warm Caribbean waters last week. All the moves are so effortless and almost pain free. Get in that pool, Ric.
Oh goodie, today is pool day! Man, that warm water is going to feel so wonderful on all your aching muscles and hurty places!! Please do try to be careful not to over-do it, as it is easy to do with aquatic therapy. With the weightlessness, the even the increased resistance feels like nothing at all, and makes ya wanna do more. That may, or may not, be a good thing, depending on what your Dr. says. If he says it's ok to push harder, then by all means, FULL STEAM AHEAD!! But, check first, please?
Yes, listen to speedie. Don't know if today will be a pool day here or not. It is only supposed to get to 70 here. If I do get in I will do some exercises and think of you. They actually turned the heat on in her mobile home this morning to take the chill off. Hehehe. It got down to in the 40's. I thought of all my friends up north.
only 70…..haha
Thought I'd cheer everyone up!!! Hehehe
70? I guess you are not in NJ, Jan??
Nope. Down in Florida. Just had to rub it in a little. Sorry.
How did the pool therapy go, Ric?
Reminds me of that meme that's been going around FB lately--a map of the US with everywhere frigid except for balmy Florida, and of course it says, 'It's Hate Florida day'. ;-)
Hehehe
LOL Cat!!!!!
Hey Ric, did pool day go ok yesterday?? < =/
Not to hijack, but in case I am not the only one who had to look up (finally) what the heck is a meme!
http://netforbeginners.about.com/od/weirdwebculture/f/What-Is-an-Internet-Meme.htm
No pool for me yesterday! We got there 20 minutes after they had filled the darn thing and it was cold. Usually after a couple of laps you warm up, but Holly said, no it was still cold. I was not about to chance cramping up or muscle spasms. I went for some stretching and flexing in the hot tub instead, and since they had just filled that also it was just very warm. Bummer :-{
Sally, did you notice the ad on the definition of meme? FEMA Flood Zone Mapswww.secondlookflood.comDo you Live in a Flood Zone? See your home on the newest map.
I don't want to see my home on the newest map. If I see my home on a FEMA map ya'all are in deep trouble. Pun intended, since we're the top of the hill.
I am feeling a bit stronger each day, and have even gone a few days without a nap.LOL I do have enough twinges and pains to remind me of my limitations. I think the surgery was a success as I'm already in less pain than preop. This weather is havoc on my arthritis, but otherwise, quality is improving. I'm hoping to get my strength back soon 'cause I'm really looking forward to getting dirty this spring.
As my very spiritual cousin would say..."see yourself strong and you will be that". I think that you have that mentality all the time Ric, so we all see you strong.
Well, YIPPEEE on the decreased pain, but pooey! on not being able to play in the pool. .. then again, you got to play in the 'warm tub', so it's not all bad. =) ... Oh, and don't deny yourself naps, they are such good things! :)
Amen to naps!!!
My DH has been taking naps for years. I had not been successful in my attempts to do so until a few days ago. I was so exhausted at 2 o clock that I couldn't finish what I was doing so I lay down on the couch in the dark basement. I fell asleep for a long time, felt like superman when I woke up and couldn't sleep well all night. The rejuvenated feeling was so awesome that I'll keep trying to get it right.
