My grandmother's neighbor gave her this plant and she ended up giving it to me! She said that they had it outside in the summer and brought it in when it got cold. I've had it for about a year now and it is progressively looking worse. I posted it once for identification and was told it was a yucca tree. What can I do to save it? The dirt that it is in is very hard, like the ground. Maybe that's a problem? Thanks in advance!

Help!!!
If the dirt is very hard, then I would repot it, and remove as much of the dirt as possible while not damaging the roots.
Use a sandy, fast draining mix that might be labeled for cactus and succulents.
If the roots are crowding the edges of the pot, then get a larger pot. A pot that breathes would be best, terra cotta.
Do you put the plant outside during the milder weather? If it is in a sunny spot through the mild weather, then brought in to too-dim a location for the winter that could be part of the problem. Maybe a brighter spot in the winter would help.
In addition to Diana's great advice, that looks a lot like a yucca, which might be hardy in your area and also might be better off living in the ground year round, but I would wait until spring to try that.
I have it right inside the door that it was right outside of all summer so it hasn't moved much lighting wise, just brought in to avoid the extreme cold temperatures at night. I will try repotting it! Thanks so much for the advice!
The sticky at the top of this forum has info that would be very applicable to your plant. I recommend reading it.
