They are a deep south type of plant, the tradescantias- if that helps. search for tradescantia cyanotis

Tradescantia and Cyanotis are 2 different genuses. I would suspect the one in question is T. sillamontana or T. 'Red Hill.'
Growing in water like that will yield a different appearance than a healthy plant in an acceptable medium, and much slower growth. If you can get it happy enough to bloom, which I would do by potting it up, the flowers could help you decide exactly what it is.
T. zebrina can look similar, but never with any hairs on the leaves, if you just want something similar. The ubiquitous ones seen for sale are usually in very low light. Putting that in the window in the picture would turn the leaves the color of the pictured plant. Another option would be T. pallida.
