Fall Round Robin Seed Swap 2013 - Haves and Wants

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

the pink muhly grass is new to me and FL is the only place I've seen it, I never saw it when I lived 100 south of where I'm at, the area I'm in now, it is everywhere.

I love the soft texture blowing in the sea breeze...It is beautiful.

Jan

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Jan, the plant files say its hardy to zone 5 (I'm also into this pink zone thing) I was never a pink kinda girl but I guess I am now lol. If you have extra, I'd surely like to perform those hardiness trials in the midwest...just to watch it dance in the breeze.

Thanks for your input Amanda.

Thanks Santa...is that your little one? LOL, too precious!

Kiowa, CO(Zone 5b)

LOVE santa pix!!!!!!!

Is that Campanula pyramidalis white or blue Evelyn? If you have any extra seed I'ld love some too. My white C.p. is 2 years old now and not sure if it will come back next season and I never get seed as blooms usually get frosted before developing. They say to cut off the stalk as it's biennial and it will come back the next season but not sure how long I can do it..

Lazlo...I'd like some Blue Pea Vine and some of the really tall hollyhocks too if available. And what's this aka Bindweed that's blue (botanical????) Sounds interesting, can I try it too...is it invasive? Kathy

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

Thanks, LasLo! I'm just updating my lists- is there anything of mine you'd like?

Prescott, AZ(Zone 7b)

Lazlo - yes I love my lion's tail ! The perennial grows here well and the hummingbirds love it. I just discovered the annual kind last year.
Santa is adorable.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Pam if you have any of these seeds to spare, I would really like a few:

Petunia Axillaris- Diane 2013- Wild White Petunia
Petunia Storm White-Swallowtail 2013-pelleted, opened

Is there anything you might like from my list?

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Domehomedee ~ May I please have the following seeds, if you have enough to spare:

Moonflower (3 seeds)
Leucanthemum x superbum "Tall Shasta Daisies"
Alcea ficifolia "Single black Hollyhocks"

Thank you!

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

Evelyn, I'll set those aside for you. I'd love some of your Campanula, if you have enough. Which color(s) do you have? I think it comes in blue and white, either of which would be great.. Also, your pale pink lupine sounds lovely.

Thanks!

Athens, PA

Evelyn - I too would be interested in your Campanula pyramidalis , if you have some seeds to spare.

Lanakila - I am not familiar with a blue lace flower - would you have a picture to share?

Domehome - would you have any of the Gaillardia grandiflora "dwarf yellow" left? I would be interested.

I also remember reading about white lupine - I cannot find it, but if there is some left, I would be interested.

I will double check to see if I can add any to my list.

Prescott, AZ(Zone 7b)

Carolyn - I have lots of the dwarf gaillardia, I'm still picking them off the plant! I'll can put some in the return robin with your name of it.

I'm getting excited. Looks like there are going to be some real goodies in the robin this year.

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

Carolyn, I'm sorry to disappoint... I had some white. lupine seeds, but not a lot and they are spoken for. Maybe someone else has some?

Athens, PA

Dome - Thank you!

Pam - no worries. I was late in asking. ^_^

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

There's always next year.... :-)

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

Two updates to my haves list:

1. The tall wonderful salvia that looks like Victoria Blue on steroids turns out to be a hybrid, S Indigo Spires. I will post that on my list and also say so on the packet... No guarantee of what the seeds will produce :-(. I think I'll try it anyway.

2. My White Milkweed, new this summer, produced lovely seeds, and there were still quite a lot left on the plant. What a nice surprise!

Carolyn ~ I am sorry, I do not have any more.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Pam ~ I would love to have some of your White Milkweed, if you have enough to share.

Please check my list to see if there is anything of interest to you.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Pam - what species of milkweed are you talking about? Do you know that there are more than 100 species of milkweed in North America?! :D

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Well everybody:

I am sorry to be so late I have been running all weekend, and yes the excitement is building!

The Robin is going to take off with a lot of seed. I'm surprised by the volume already, so that's why I'm proposing we eliminate individual bags with bags inside.

In the past we have each been stuffing a bag full of bags of seed and putting our name on the outside of the bag to say, for example, "From AmandaEsq"

If our names are on a label inside the seed packet as requested to identify the species and season then I don't see why we should take up all that space with individual baggies.

If you are spectacular like Dee and Kathy (and many of you are!!!) and have multiple individual packets of a single species you might put a rubber band around them.

Also - pretend you are packing for your vacation, flatten out the ziplock bag before you seal it (like you are sitting on your suitcase before you zip it closed) and press the air out of the bag so as to make the contents that much more compact.

Because of the volume and tedium involved with going thru the entire box to pick out what you want, I think everyone could spend up to four days with the Robin on the first pass. It works out that way if you get it on the weekend anyway. And we will all be in the throes of holiday madness within a few weeks' time. Don't want you to feel any more anxious over the Robin and your obligations to the rest of the group.

Remember you will be hung in effigy in my garden and ostracized forever if you (1) keep the Robin for longer than four days or (2) fail to respond to Dmail, telephone message, or pounding on your door during your time with the Robin.

Does anything here sound off base?

Don't forget to let me know if you think so.

I've mentioned this before, at the risk of sounding preachy, that I expect each of you to treat the Robin as if you were packing the box for an individual trade. I take a lot of care when I send a package to someone else, and I am usually delighted with the way seed and plants come to me. I come away with either a positive impression of my DG trading partner or a "wow, I can't believe s/he sent this to me this way" impression.

Remember, labels inside individual ziploc packages of seed with the following information:

DG Member Name;
Species (common and botanical name); and
Season collected (2011-2013 ONLY)

Seems pretty simple.

Here is the tentative flight path Susie worked up for us this week:

AMANDAESQ---NC
Lanakila-----NC
czimmerman00---KY
Poisondartfrog (Alana)-----KY
VIBURNUMVALLY----KY
Meadowyck (Jan)----FL
LazLo------TX
CheerMom (Sue G) -----AZ
Domehomedee-----CA
Evelyn_in_the_Garden---CA
warriorswisdomkathy---CO
Iowhen----IA
mipii---MI
deejay9 (Susie)----MI
obliqua (Judy)---PA
luvsgrtdanes (Ronnie)PA
Kantzklan----PA
Carolyn22----PA
pfg (Pam)----NY
gardenseeder63-----NH
NisiNJ---NJ
Bluespiral-----MD

A couple of folks have dropped out. Please make sure you are accounted for on the flight path.

I haven't had a chance to look at the map to make sure that participants in individual states (for example, PA) are listed in sequential order so that the distance is the least and will minimize postage.

If you have an INDIVIDUAL TRADE there will be a separate bag to put them into.

There will also be a slip of paper in the bag where you must log your individual trade.

If there is a packet of seed in the individual trade bag earmarked for someone else, you are to keep your grimy greedy garden hands off. Logging individual trades will ensure (hopefully) that the seed you send to another participant gets where it's going.

Now is the time to point out any flaws or errors in this system!

Robin will ship by 4:30 p.m. EST on Tuesday, November 12, 2013.

A.

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Sounds good, let the games begin!

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

Sorry, the tag was vague, just said White Milkweed. I just googled, and the closest match is A Variegata. It's about 4' tall, the flowers look like classic wild milkweed but white, and the pods also look like the ones I remember from fields in my childhood. They have the floss in them and brown seeds.

I bought it locally, and it's endangered here. I wonder if someone's trying to help the monarchs and re-distribute it? Maybe that's why the tag wasn't what we're used to from growers, listing all the pertinent growing info?

(Zone 7a)

Hello - Am getting a tad overwhelmed by various things going on in my life right now, so am withdrawing from this robin. Hope y'all have a great time and that the robin flies smoothly.

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Sorry to hear Blue, I wish you well!
Robin

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Oh Blue, remember:

You don't have to put much of anything in to the Robin to participate.

I am making it less fun with all these demands. I feel like "the Seed Nazi" (pardon my expression).

Sigh.

If there is anybody left on this thread by the time I ship on Tuesday (holy heck that's tomorrow!!) I'll be surprised.

A.

p.s. going to raise the flag now in honor of my grampap on Veteran's day.
p.p.s. this is NOT the same pole from which I hang in effigy.

Kiowa, CO(Zone 5b)

Yeah....

(Zone 7a)

Amanda, your rules look like an effective, innovative way to deal with some of the risks inherent in this type of swap - so I'm fine with those - everything about this swap looks great - wishing everyone well.

Honoring our troops and veterans and the ones we lost too

Your rules are great!

Since I'm so far down the flight path, I'll be sending my contribution to Lanakila tomorrow. I finally got all those little devils cleaned, and can't wait to get rid of them, lol. I'll dmail the tracking info when I get it :-)

Barbourville, KY(Zone 7a)

Rules are good, Amanda. Thank you for trying to maintain the integrity of the swap for everyone :)

Iowa City, IA(Zone 5a)

Joe Pye seeds are so little and fluffy that if they were all in one baggie, they would float out every time it was opened. So I'm putting those guys into individual packets. I have the glassine envelopes which are lightweight and writing stays put on them.

I am *SO* *EXCITED* about the robin.

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

Me too!

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Groovy.

I am one of "those" who don't know how to or aren't equipped or maybe lazy or fearful of pain (some of these seeds are very sharp!!!). I admit to having chaff on some of my seed. Note that I didn't make any rulz about chaff on seed.

heh.

Glassine envelopes I think are almost as good (maybe better!) than plastic zippies. Frankly I don't know if I will be ready for the Robin by tomorrow, so here goes hoping.

Noticed I lost some seed in our last wind/rain event. Was sorry to see it go. :/

Keep you posted. I know you're all on pins and needles. Have not heard from some folks in days. Lanakila? You out there? Will you be around to receive the Robin?

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Yeah Amanda, I like your conscientious regimentation.

Athens, PA

Evelyn - that is ok. I know I asked late.

Carolyn

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

Rules are great, everyone knows what is expected and nothing to chance. I'm a rule person myself. I like order and know ahead of time on what is expected.

Plus it is out of respect for those coming in rotation after you.

Personally when I participated in the past, I went through the seeds that night...LOL and then took one more day to go through again.

Can't wait.

Is it Tuesday yet??????

Jan

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Amanda ~ Does that mean that you will call each of us when we get the robin? Do you have my phone number? And milkweed? ^_^

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Evelyn..I will only call you if you are keeping the Robin captive longer than you're supposed to (some can go thru in an afternoon, some will need more time).we've had people disappear. When we can't raise a response we get antsy.

Yes, I have your milkweed! Ju said he sent some. I don't know what you still need. Let me know.

A.

P.s. It's Tuesday.
