2013 N Central TX RU Oct. 20th in Arlington TRADE THREAD #2

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Great!! I am glad to hear that.

Dallas, TX

Oh. So some thought it was easy to get around and talk to people? Really? Obviously y'all weren't first time attendees. In fact, I'd like to say 'sorry' to all the folks that I really didn't get to visit with.

Thanks to all of y'all for your generosity. It took me hours to unload my car. Ok, maybe I exaggerate a little. Seriously tho, my shoulders are so sore that I'm just getting around to making breakfast. On the plus side of breakfast will be adding some of that wonderful fruit salsa to an omelet

Don't be surprised if any of y'all get d-mails from me with questions on how not to kill the plants you gave me.

So when is the next RU? :D

Fort Worth, TX

trying to plant things, the white orchid wants sheltered from northern winds, correct?

and the flame vine?

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

flowerchild, I think my having been a few times also contributed to my being able to get around and talk more. The first time I came, I was sorta overwhelmed by the newness of the whole situation. That, and being dressed for Houston weather and the RU was 40* due to a cold front that came thru the night before. We all shivered our way thru it. Josephine contributed a jacket and my neighbor made a run to the local Target for a hoodie for us both. Im glad you had a good time. I always do.

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

The white orchid needs your most protected location. It is a zone 9 and up plant. In your area it will need to get about 2" of trunk diameter before it can survive a freeze. Even then it will freeze to the ground. It will come back from the roots and when it gets perhaps 3" in diam. it can handle the freeze on the South side of your house. The flame vine does well on the South side of a building as well.

Fort Worth, TX

ahhh, thank you Marty! I planted the flame vine in its pot so I could move it if needed, and I will move both of them to the south half of my fenced lot, near the bees and my pomegranate bush. I can keep them covered there if need be.

my dogs have the back yard and have killed too many plants against the south side of my foundation. or I just may cheat and keep them in the greenhouse on the south side of my house, yup, for this winter that will do. Thank you again! I have good big pots and organic potting mix.

Dallas, TX

Sybram - Love the fern that you gave me even tho I could only carry it a few steps before I collapsed. Assume you'll want the pot container back at some point.
Question: did you also give me the ferns in the plastic bag? They look the same, but I sometimes have a hard time differentiating between similar ferns.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

It was a smoother RU for sure. I didn't feel as frazzled as I usually do. Then again, I didn't bring as many plants as I normally do! I got to actually visit and talk with a lot of you this time.
@Joan...I didn't unload until much later...had to grab a nap after the food stuff was put away and animals consoled. Oh, and ditto what Marty said on the Flame Vine. I have mine on the southeast corner of the shop. Hopefully this year it will get more blooms if my neighbor cuts the tree down that she wants to have taken out. It would love full sun, but it grows great there now, dies back in winter and rebounds again. I will post a picture of a decorated pot if I get around to getting one done.

@Marty...Glad to hear you got home without problems. I know you were exhausted.

Mibus and Linda we need to hear from both of you to know you are home safe. It was good to see Doris again Linda.
Potted my plumarias and watered everything. Thanks Steve for the seeds, book, and pot that I got from you, and the "snail feet".

@Beverly...Thanks for your wonderful help, it was definitely appreciated. Loved meeting you and Richard, as did Herman. Hope you guys made it home safely as well.

@ Carol and Rick...You guys were troopers! Thanks for helping and enjoyed seeing you again this year.

Thanks to Frank and Josephine and others that made the day special. Thanks to all that cooked, bought & brought. Most of all thanks to God for the wonderful weather and wonderful friends!

I don't think Herman has even took the card out of the camera yet...in a few days maybe we will post pics.

Yep I am home made it safe and sound and made it home from work in the pouring rain today LOL

The ferns in the plastic bag were from me do not recall the name.

as for those with the plumerias a good place to learn about them other then the plumeria thread is

http://www.plumeria101.com/

they do not need water every day they can go once a week and in the fall winter they can go less then that
If you choose not to plant in a pot then put in a safe place out of the weather and come spring plant. and the leaves will come out. Bloom burst will help with flowering but some that are small may not bloom for a year or two and the blooms are pink with white

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

That's great Phyllis, thanks for being there and for the link!

Fort Worth, TX

well almost everything was identified and planted before I had time to forget what it was.

The flame vine and the white orchid tree are safely in my greenhouse. The turkey fig is in the garden where it will get good soil, morning and midday sun but afternoon shade, hope it likes it. The frostweeds are in my wildflower garden along a fence where they won't get huge amounts of water but won't be forgotten either.

The lovely little autumn fern from Txflowerchild I think? is in the shade under my pine tree where it will get a small amount of sun but not too much, springs wood fern has survived there nicely and the red salvias are where they will get a bit more sun. The mints all have a separate sunny spot, I will enjoy all of them much more of they don't cross up with each other.
And the garlic is in the ground too

Then we come to a plant I THOUGHT I got from Josephine, but I could be wrong, and I thought it was some kind of mesquite, but it is a dwarf something with dainty delicate leaves, about 2 feet tall, and please help me remember what it is. So much chaos in the last few days I have lost my memory.

It was wonderful getting to see all of you again, and the food was great too! Appreciate the hot water effort from Sheila, I plan to solve that problem, maybe with a little alcohol burner or candle burner that can sit on top of a grill, the next time. Or I'll make a batch of sweet tea and muddle through.

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

Gypsi, I remember our talking about that plant because it looked a little like Pride of Barbados but it's not that.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I think that plant is Bird of Paradise, Caesalpinia gilliesii here is a link
http://ag.arizona.edu/pima/gardening/aridplants/Caesalpinia_gilliesii.html

Fort Worth, TX

that is what it was, thank you Josephine!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Gypsi, since you live in FW, maybe you could bring a thermos of hot water next time, or make hot tea to bring for yourself. Sorry it took too much electricity, I didn't realize that.

Fort Worth, TX

No worries Sheila. Thank you

Beverly Pflugerville, TX(Zone 8b)

Just want to say thanks to all for the plants I received. We had a very nice time meeting and visiting with fellow gardeners.

All of my plants are in the ground except for three that are still in pots. They are on the schedule for tomorrow.

The food was great and the company even better. We were happy to give a little bit of assistance in the setup.

Made it home in 3 1/2 hours, tired but happy that we made the effort to go!!

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

Same sentiment on having a great time and enjoying getting a chance to chat longer with more people. Thankyou so much to our fearless organizers ! My guests thought the whole experience was really fun aswell.

Dallas, TX

Some of you who have already planted your new plants are just showing off! I'm lucky that mine are out of the car.

Phyllis, thanks for telling me about the ferns in the bag. You prob. did tell me at the RU and it escaped my mind. Oh. I was just flipping thru this thread and saw your post that you were going to give me ferns. They do look a lot like the fern I got from Sybram. Time will tell.

Gypsi - yes, the Autumn fern was from me. I'm glad you found a home for it. I'm even happier that I didn't destroy any of the ferns I brought to the RU.

Bezziec - I had no idea that the cereus cutting was going to be as big as it was. I'm so excited! At or about what temp do you think I ought bring it inside, at least for the night? The ones I grew in Austin were sheltered so that was a non-issue - - - plus diff. climate.

Josephine - If memory serves, and I've already proven that it doesn't, I think it was you that gave me a tiny little pot with some tiny little 'things' poking up. What the heck was that?

The crinums - - - should I cut off some or all of the leaves (straps)?

Looking back thru this thread I'm beginning to wonder if I gave everyone the plants that I said I would. If I forgot something, my apologies.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Never cut the straps on crinums-when it gets cold the freezes will do that for you if planted outside. The crinum amaryllis needs its straps.

Beverly Pflugerville, TX(Zone 8b)

tx_flower_child---I don't have a lot of experience with the cereus, but my friend (who gave me mine) says that she just brings it in when it is going to frost or freeze. That's how I treat my Christmas cactus and my succulents. Since the cereus is in the cactus family, I plan to just treat mine the same as my Christmas cactus. Of course we are considerably warmer in the Austin area than you are. Last year we only had two nights that any of my plants needed protection.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

Gypsi yep Josephine is right that is just what it is I started it from seed I had from the mother plant before I lost it in the drought

all my plants are happy back here in my back room for now as I don't get home form work in time to get things planted before dark during the week LOL

(Carol) Euless, TX(Zone 8a)

Rick and I had a great time! This being our second round-up, we did find it easier to socialize more as we kind of "knew the routine." It was good to see familiar faces and meet new ones. My new plant babies got sorted on Sunday, but none are in the ground yet, as I've been down this week from having a tooth pulled. I'm looking forward to settling them in this weekend. Thanks to all for the food, flora, friendship and fun!!

Fort Worth, TX

Thank you Phylis for your precious baby Bird of Paradise.

the gathering was very pleasant

Dallas, TX

Did everyone who wanted 4 o'clock seeds get them? I think I might not have brought them to all who requested. I have more seeds if anyone wants and if it's legal to mail them.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Joan, they are showing off! LOL!
As for the pot with tiny things....take a picture and post for id. Josephine has too many pots to remember and it is easier that remembering too. We normally start a thread after RUs to get ids on all that we forget! Not as many people so it is ok to post here.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

You guys havent posted RU pix either and this thread IS getting to be a long scroll...just sayin, whine, we love seeing your swap treasures and goins on...

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I am sorry Kitt, but I have been very busy, Too many irons in the fire, I will try to get it done this weekend.
I am glad people enjoy seeing the pictures, sometimes you wonder.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

DG thrives on the pix, you should know by the amount of the hits the threads get hee, other areas virtually died out, but Texans weave in and out for the sights that allow them to sit back and see as well. Thanx Josephine

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

You are welcome, I have a lot of good friends on the Texas forum and I love them all.

Dallas, TX

Ok, since we're kinda using this as a catch-all and I don't really want to start a new one, I have a question. I noticed somewhere that there's a forum or thread about Dave, the creator of DG. I didn't know that he sold DG a few years ago and now has another site, All Things Dave. Was glancing at the new site and saw that people were inquiring why he didn't ever make an appearance in Dallas. He said that he would love to come to Dallas (he's been to Tyler, recently I think) but he's never been invited. I'm just curious if anyone has thoughts on this. If you don't want to answer in this thread, send me a D-mail. Thanks.

Dallas, TX

Phyllis - I took the fern to Nich-Hardie in Dallas and 2 people, independent of each other, said that it was a Kimberly fern.

Crinum growers - How deep should they be planted? Bury the whole thing? The bulb? Part of the bulb? The 'stalk'? Just throw it over in a corner w/o planting it and forget about it? Or???

The little unidentified plant - I can safely say that it is a little bulb (or 2). I have an old cell phone 'cuz I still like it but it doesn't take good pictures. And I can only say that I think the plant was a little giftie from Josephine. Someone else got one too. If I can't get a decent picture I'll draft one of my neighbors b/c she has a new cell phone. (As much as I like my old phone, I may have to replace it as the keys are starting to stick and they're also starting to fade. Sigh.)

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Joan, I didn't have any little bulbs, I think it was Gypsi who had those, she gave me one or two also, and i think they are Summer Snowflakes.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Crinums if planted outdoors in Dallas- are apt to freeze back after a hard frost, Here in the zone 8 they are hardier, but still freeze back. Like an onion, if planted on top of a pot, their roots will pull them deeper and deeper into the soil until they are too deep to bloom after awhile. IF in a pot cover only the bottom half to 1/3 of the bulb. They love heat, and humidity, and can get huge down here- saw a crinum the stalk was 18" thick above the bulb.

I tried to dig this one up once to share it and could never reach the bottom. I thought I had added soil in the area forgetting it was there! LOL! It looks like yours. I got it at a Garden Web plant trade in Trinity Park a long time ago.

Tx_Flower_Child and Frostweed---I got a little bulb too in small pot. Just thought it got under my sign by mistake. Thank you to Gypsi or whomever put it there. I put it in the ground, but have planted so much in the last week that I can't remember where I stuck it. Guess it will be a surprise in the spring. I'm telling you it's a sad thing to lose your mind.

Covenantgarden---I'm pretty sure that I got some red salvia from you at the end of the trading. By any chance, do you know it's name? It has fuzzy stems. It was nice to meet you and Rick and thanks again for the plants you brought me.

I received a nice aloe as a door prize. Thanks to whomever brought that.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Dennis brought the Aloe, and it is gorgeous.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

If yours is a deep rose, Sheila, they are Ellen Bosanquets probably. When I get frustrated and trim the 10' / 12' straps they bloom next year as a pale dirty pink.I sent Sybram a Milk n Wine (prob id) thru Joy and Marty- recognizable because I used a Marker to write her name on the bulb, A large crinim can be divided by slicing sections of the bulb and keeping some root attached

Dallas, TX

KItt and Sheila - Thanks for the pictures and info on the crinums. The first picture seems to be the same size or thereabouts as the ones I had in Austin. But I wasn't the one who planted them. And, of ourse, Dallas is a different zone.

Bezziec - It's not such a sad thing to lose one's mind. I lost mine decades ago and haven't missed it a bit. I just sometimes wear bandanas to keep my head tied on.

Frostweed - The paparazzi did a fine job. Thanks for posting the pictures.

Gypsi - If you are the one that gave some of us the little bulbs, thank you and what are they? Summer snowflakes as Frostweed suggested?

Beverly Pflugerville, TX(Zone 8b)

There is nothing like being a little behind. We just tilled a new flower area yesterday. One small corner is shaded. I now realize that I should have asked for Texas Gold Columbine seeds. Does anyone have any? I will be happy to send you postage.
