I recently purchased a Boston Fern in a clay pot and placed it inside (where it does not get any direct sun at all). I've noticed that the tips are browning. It might be that it needs more water, as it's on a high shelf and not easy to get to (so I'm guilty of neglecting to water it). Can I put this plant in my balcony? - my balcony is facing SSE so it gets bright sunlight from about 8am to 2pm. If this is too much, I can put it somewhere where it gets only about 2-3 hours of direct sun. What would be best please? Can it take any direct sun at all?
Thanks!
Boston Fern in Sunny Location
I have seen some of these in northern windows with only a tiny bit of sun and they are fine. This was one of the most delicate, laciest types. I think the regular type is OK with only a little more sun.
The earliest sun in the morning and late in the evening is cooler, and probably OK. I would not put it in more sun than that, not from mid morning through mid afternoon.
If you can use a sheer curtain to reduce the light then a window with more sun is probably OK. I have several ferns in a western window with such a curtain.
Thanks for your reply. I've placed it outside, but under a shelf, so at least it gets more shade. I'll keep an eye on it and see how it goes.
