I have daylillies & daffodils interplanted in a narrow (10-14") strip between sidewalk & a low, dry-built stone wall. They looked great at first, but after 3yrs, the daffs came up beautifully - but only in stretches, with intervening empty areas, & then the daylillies did the same thing in reverse. I thought these two were supposed to play well together! Is this the natural way that interplantings develop? Or is it more likely that there's competition from some deficiency in the environment? It's full sun & nice, well-drained loam; the plants are on the north side, where the soil stays moist, but they still get sun (wall is only about 14" high.) But I have never watered, fertilized, or tested the soil. Would doing any of these things be likely to make a difference - or is the space just too small? If so, any ideas for something that would co-habitate with my daffodils better - maybe miniature hostas?
