I just got three great deals on some bushes; elderberry black lace, miss kim lilac and ninebark, summer wine. My question is, can I just plant them in the ground in their pots for the winter? I'm in Zone 4 to Zone 5. I'm not sure where I'm going with them yet. Thanks!
Can I overwinter these pots in the ground?
Yes, heeling in the pots (that is, burying the pots in holes up to their rims) would be fine in any climate.
Thanks. I thought so, but being it's the end of the season I wasn't sure if they'd grow round their pots. But I suppose when it's freezing they're not really growing. Now just have to find space for them.
The do not grow much if at all when it is freezing, but as soon as the weather turns they will start growing. Heeling them in is good insulation. Much better than leaving the pots exposed to the air.
Don't know what you mean by "growing around their pots" but as the days shorten and it starts to freeze, they'll go dormant and won't grow at all.
